I live in Sweden. Back in 2000 Albert Lee played in my home town. Albert and his band had played in Norway the night before and they were hit by a snowstorm on the way to Sweden. They were 2 hours late for the concert and had been driving for hours. Me and some other people at the concert helped Albert and his band carry all the equipment inside. In no time Albert and his band were ready to play. They must have been really tired after hours on the road in terrible weather. They went up on stage without any soundcheck and played for over 2 hours. AMAZING !! The concert was great and Albert and his band were absolutely amazing. I have the deepest respect for this man. One of the best guitar players in history and a wonderful personality.
Clapton has always had the spotlight on him but he has always tried to shine the spotlight onto others. Clapton didn't care to share a record with Duane Allman, Albert Lee, Doyle Bramhall, and others. When I saw him last September in Nashville he played great and gave a ton of time to Doyle as well and then for the encore he brought out Marcus King and just stood back and let him wear it out. I love Clapton so much and any guitar Rushmore is incomplete without him.
I saw EC in early 1981during the same time and was just blown away by the opening with "Country Boy", I decided right then at the age of 20 to commit more time to my studies at University.
Man I could just listen to these stories all night long. Two great guys right here - John and Albert. Also, how's about that last story to underscore where tone really comes from? 🖐😉
79 was the year I went to see Clapton not having much clue about Albert .But when I’ve heard him playing I was floored! Don’t remember him playing LP but definitely remember his Tele . That was the day I fell in love with this guitar and today it is still my #1 guitar. Love Albert Lee . One of a kind! Hi is a legend.
The first time I saw Albert was with the Muddy Waters/Eric Clapton tour in '78. That night in Chicago there were a few guest musicians sitting in through out the night. Willie Dixon and Johnny Winter, but I gotta admit Albert Lee's playing was a total stand out! He didn't overplay anyone he was just that damn good. I never heard of him before that night. If you think about it, Muddy, Eric, Johnny Winter, Bob Margolin, playing in Chicago and Albert Lee was hanging in there! Hell, Clapton was playing slide half the night on Blackie, a rare treat!
Very nice guy and great player! My band opened for Carlene Carter in the early ‘90’s and Albert signed my Tele after playing it. Said it played as easy as a Les Paul. I setup guitars. It was an honor that he played it and signed it! That and another Tele signed by Brent Mason!
Kenny Gardner, get Tina Turner to carve her autograph into your Tele using a switchblade knife. She did that to Jeff Beck’s Jackson guitar at his request during the Private Dancer sessions. I think Tina lives in Switzerland now.
Very well done video, thanks for this Albert, love to hear the tales of the past from you and now all part of British and US music history, and what a history!
I saw Albert first with EmmyLou Harris in 1975. The outdoor venue had maybe 30 people there. At the end of first set, Albert came out in the audience and I got to speak with him. Just a great player and an even better person.
Thanks for posting this interview. I saw Albert Lee with Clapton in 1982. I remember being blown away by how good he was and especially how much of the workload he carried. He played many many of the signature Clapton riffs and parts. It was a guitar genius two-fer that night.
Fantastic musician. I have a rare album called 'Green Bullfrog' with Albert on it, as well as Ritchie Blackmore and Big Jim Sullivan, with Ian Paice on drums. It's since been reissued, great jamming and playing some old tunes.
Albert's rock guitar solo's we're something to hear while Clapton played rhythm guitar. Seeing Ry Cooder up their too, made the three way playing spectacular. The Money & Cigarette's tour. Albert Lee is a melodic shredder. Eric Clapton played all of his solo's opposite Albert a 1,000% better than his other bands. Albert Lee pushed Clapton to play much better lead guitar. I heard his (EC's)long slow blues solo intro to Wonderful Tonight and its was Jeff Beck 'Pork Pie Hat' slow, sweet and melodically beautiful with really amazing bending and vibrato.
Back in the old days (grandpa is telling..) we didn’t have pa and no inear or monitors, so you need to have a big amp to play the whole venue and put your 100 watt Twin on top of two crates of beer so you could hear yourself play on top of the drums (no mics so using the backend of the sticks) and the 200 watt basplayer..😬 in Holland we call it “eardrum shredding loud” You can imaging that after 40 years of rock and roll I m deaf as a doornail... and NOW I got in ears hahaha
@@freerkottema Trust me, I remember those nights of a Marshall 100wt & 4/12 cabs... I also shot guns all the time in competition, so my hearing is toast also. Watching musicians play today, they don't even have to move a wall of 4/12's! Take care.
My dad was a Chet Atkins fan,and with good reason, supremely talented guitarist and musician. But I’ve become a huge Albert Lee fan, with good reason.Just an amazing musician and guitarist. No distortion, just pure country twang.
I first saw Albert with Eric in 1981, and it's a night I will never forget !! . Have seen him many times since and he always gives a great performance. Next time will be March 4th , and I can't wait. He always has time for his fans at the end of the show and a true legend. I have spoken to him a few times, and he signed my Tele and Music Man . It's astonishing how many true greats he has played with . .
Some believe that is why Clapton let him go. Got tired of being upstaged. Seems like they got along afterward, though and I haven't seen any videos where he disses on Clapton.
well......to sum it up, they don't come any better. Remember one night years ago at the "Sand Dollar" in Vegas, as we would trade guitars off for fun, and Albert put an old Les Paul Std w pafs on and it totally changed his personality in a great way. The genius was sounding a bit like Jeff beck! Just an amazing man on and off the stage...
He started playing around 1958. Soon picked up Cliff Gallup, solos ,scotty Moore ,James Burton. In a time of no U Tube and only Bert Weedons book ,play in a day .
His acoustic guitar solo on “Pretty Girl” from Eric Clapton’s 1983 album Money and Cigarettes was the first time I ever heard Albert. No one cares about what I have to say.
The big names in guitar show business are literally minuscule to Alberts talent... The Chas and Dave show, Eric might as well have been making the tea and coffee backstage ...
Clapton always invites Albert Lee because he is fk'ing awesome guitar player. Albert has been consistently great over the years, and can play with, or outplay most guitar players on the planet.
I'll second that opinion. Albert Lee plays amazing rock solo's. Truly inspirational and melodic and tasty as all get up. I used to see him playing a lot with Steve Morse live and it was insane what those two would get up to.
I have really enjoyed Albert's playing since his days with Hot Band. Always a tasty player who compliments the song perfectly. Albert seems like a genuinely nice guy....completely unaffected by his fame. I have to be honest....his signature guitar is ugly (sorry Albert) and I do wish he would vary his tone.....always the same....never changes. Too bad he didn't stick to a Tele. Probably could have had his signature model Fender but I know he likes the folks at Music Man.
" I guess it was pretty loud".... there goes the saying that loud will damage your hearing..Albert Lee hearing every note at 80 years old - hold on forget I said that, that is not good medical advice!
