Albrecht Mayer, solo oboist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, is a celebrated star. Together with Sarah Willis, hornist with the same orchestra, Mayer presents his particular instrument. The oboe is said to be one of the most difficult instruments to play. Mayer explains what’s special about his playing technique and gives wonderful examples of the oboe’s tone. The star oboist Albrecht Mayer reveals that he loves to touch the audience with the enchanting sound of his instrument. Discover a new episode of Sarah’s Music and learn all about the oboe!
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section.
She was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.
In 1991, she moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn in the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.

Because I was the only oboe player I had private lessons and when we played in the band I had no idea I was the only one playing when I was because I assumed flutes were playing which I never heard even when I knew they were playing. It took the performance anxiety off. Other people had to tell me when I had the solo as I never could tell.

I play both the oboe and bassoon at the professional level (obviously with different organizations). I can tell you unequivivally that the bassoon is an infinitely more difficult instrument to play. Bassoon deals with the same reed and embouchure challenges, more difficult breath control (you have to be able to support a STABLE wind stream through roughly an eight foot column of pipe to insure perfect pitch intonation), with or without circular breathing, and some crazy fingerings, including "forked" fingerings in BOTH the right and left hand, especially in the tenor and beyond registers, pressing up to 9 (yep...count 'em) keys with the left thumb and 4 keys with the right thumb - all while playing some incredibly difficult passages at break-neck speed, since you most likely are doubling the strings (look no further than the overture to "The Marriage of Figaro") in many sections of any given score. Yep...bassoon is probably one of the most difficult - if not THE most difficult - instrument to master!

Circular breathing ftw! My son's teacher told him it makes people in the audience nervous when you do it for too long so to use it wisely. He is 2.5 years in and the dying duck sound is already long gone. Herr Mayer is one of the first oboists he watched on RU-vid, including some masterclasses in the first week LOL, when he brought the instrument home. Watching my son and given how oboists speak of their instrument, I think once the oboe grabs you as an instrumentalist it never lets go, and neither do you. Practice, seek out knowledgeable teachers, practice, research, practice, listen, and practice and then practice a whole lot more. It'll be so worth it.

Absolutely lovely video. That bit about circular breathing blew me away--doing all of "Jesu, Joy" in one breath, or rather in one uninterrupted line! And such a beautiful sound; perhaps the word "plangent" had to be invented just to describe the oboe. Herr Mayer certainly disproves the old saw that the oboe is an ill wind that nobody blows good. @ropmy947
@ropmy947 7 лет назад
bushyconn it's not circular breathing; he is pointing out the fact that we have to breathe out as we do not get to get rid of our air by playing. The only thing here is that he is doing it while playing, what not all are able to do...
@ursthomann3463
@ursthomann3463 6 лет назад
well, that is not entirely true either. In fact both is correct. Due to the small amount of air that can be pressed through the mouth piece, one needs to exhale because one would otherwise suffocate dispite still having a lung full of (oxygen depleted) air. But then one needs to inhale again. So, in fact, it is circular breathing but in both directions. One would be surprised how easily the basic principle can be learned. However, the difficulty really is that while all the ex- and inhaling activity happens a constant air pressure at the mouth piece is maintained such that the sound of the instrument remains well controlled. There are not many oboists who master this technique in such perfection as Albrecht Mayer.

Exactly. I get mine from Oboe Duck. Order online and they are delivered in like a week. I buy the intermediate reeds and they are pretty good. @cmw12
@cmw12 6 лет назад
This will be an unpopular opinion, but the oboe really isn't that hard, GIVEN A NICE REED. Yes, it requires a developed embouchure and strong breath support, but that just takes time. I do agree that keeping oneself supplied with reeds is a huge pain. Fair enough. Having played the oboe (and the clarinet, and the bassoon) and the violin, however, I would say that strings are more challenging than woodwinds in general. Playing in tune is harder, articulating is harder, vibrato is harder, dynamics are harder, and there is more competition from your fellow musicians. In every MUSICAL way (not counting reed making here), strings are just harder. Plus, the music written for strings seems objectively harder. Compare any violin concerto to an oboe concerto. I haven't played the French Horn, but I suspect it's much more difficult than the oboe too. Partials, on-the-fly transposing, right hand technique (the one inside the bell)... Difficulty aside, the oboe is gorgeous instrument, just lovely. In the end, that's what matters. Albrecht here is my favorite oboist.

Circular Breathing: I was talking to an old film music orchestrator years ago about synth sounds replacing real players, and he told me a story about how Paul McCartney once arrogantly stated, 'Can a woodwind player do this?' as he pressed a key down to hold a synth note for an extended period of time (longer than what he thought would be the lung capacity of a player). Guess he never heard of circular breathing, or the idea of not writing past the performer's limitations to garner a natural sounding composition.

I disagree on that it is the hardest instrument. I played Oboe and Bassoon, and I can say from personal experience that Bassoon is by far harder. The difference is that with Bassoon, there are many more keys to press, and to move your thumbs and fingers. As a beginner, the Bassoon is extremely difficult to control as well.

Maintaining good embouchure makes the oboe a bit of a demanding instrument, but it’s not the hardest instrument to play, imho. Fingering is more or less similar to the recorder. Sight reading is a breeze with single bars. And yes, you’ll need a pair of ears, but still the range of the individual tones is pretty much set, contrarily to the human voice. As for breath support; that’s something all wind instruments (except for pipe organ and bagpipe) and voice have in common. But yes, when played properly, the oboe makes for beautiful music.

As both a violinist and an oboist, I can assure you that the violin is much more difficult to play than the oboe for several reasons including the wider range.

Every instrument is hard in their own unique way. You can't just say that one is harder than another. It may be hard in a certain way that other instruments it isn't a problem on.

Ren, well, I play the Oboe, if I played viola or Cello, I think I would also think that instrument is the best, however, only the fact that the Oboe is the most complex instrument of the wind instrument family make it the best and most wonderful instrument to me. Don't you? It tuned the orchestra with his LA. It carries the melody. It does amazing music solos. It sound is exquisite. And it is very very difficult to execute and perfect. I think it's enough to make it the best. The family of violins is definitely beautiful, I have no problem in recognizing it. ;) Pd: Sorry my English isn't very well.

Judith Jiménez Haha, don’t worry your English is perfect, way better than people who actually speak English. Also I completely agree on your statement the oboe is a beautiful instrument.

Yup the oboe is difficult, but sounds so beautiful. I'm happy to hear that you play the oboe. I want to congratulate you for doing that. And as a French Horn player, i understand how difficult an instrument can be, especially the oboe.

Call it what it is: Circular breathing. By the way other woodwind musicians also utilize the technique. It is not endemic of just the OBOE.

The first “wrong button” sounds like me when I try to play XD people always tease me about how I suck and my band teacher once told the whole class that oboe was one of the hardest instruments to play XD so take that aLl YoU hAtErZ

Fantastic musicians both of them! When it comes to 'circular breathing', I am not so sure that Albrecht M. is correct when he says that it was already known and practiced in the old days. If anybody has documentation of it, please leave a comment - thx

Professional musicians normally specialize but why do some seem not to have a passing knowledge of basic technique of other instruments? How unaware are they of what their colleagues do?

I don't know if it's fact or fiction. But I've been told that there are oboists who have experienced brain aneurysms from playing the oboe - especially in the higher register. 😲

As a flautist, pianist, trombonist, saxophonist, violist and bassoonist, I’ll say I don’t think it’s fair to say certain instruments are harder than others. Every instrument is different and has its own pros, and difficulties.
