Love was an American psychedelic and folk-rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965. Led by Arthur Lee, Love was one of the first racially diverse American rock bands. Their style drew from an eclectic range of sources including hard rock, blues, jazz, flamenco, and orchestral pop.
While finding only modest success on the music charts, peaking in 1966 with their Top 40 hit “7 and 7 Is”, Love would come to be praised by critics as their third album, Forever Changes (1967), became generally regarded as one of the best albums of the 1960s. It was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2011.
Singer/multi-instrumentalist Arthur Lee, who was originally from Memphis, Tennessee but had lived in Los Angelessince the age of five, had been recording since 1963 with his bands the LAG’s and Lee’s American Four. He wrote and produced the single “My Diary” for Rosa Lee Brooks in 1964, which featured Jimi Hendrix on guitar. The Sons Of Adam, which included future Love drummer Michael Stuart, recorded the Lee composition “Feathered Fish”. After attending a performance by the Byrds, Lee decided to form a band that joined the newly minted folk-rock sound of the Byrds to his primarily rhythm and blues style.
Love started playing the Los Angeles clubs in April 1965 and became a popular local attraction, while gaining the attention of the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. The band lived communally in a house called “the Castle” and their first two albums included photographs shot in the garden of that house.
Their third album Forever Changes was released in November 1967 and was co-produced by Bruce Botnick. The album displayed a softer and more avant-garde approach for the band. By this time, tension arose between Arthur Lee and Bryan MacLean, who wanted more of his songs on the album. The band recorded the album in only 64 hours, though many professional session players were utilized, including some who replaced the actual band members in some songs. Writer Richard Meltzer, in his book The Aesthetics of Rock, commented on Love’s “orchestral moves”, “post-doper word contraction cuteness”, and Lee’s vocal style that serves as a “reaffirmation of Johnny Mathis”. Forever Changes included one hit single, MacLean’s “Alone Again Or”. By this stage, Love were far more popular in the UK, where the album reached No. 24, than in their home country, where it could only reach No. 154. Forever Changeshas since received recognition as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, appearing on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2011.

Some great albums in the late 60s in particular, along with Forever Changes, were Pet Sounds and Sgt Peppers' (of course), Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies, SF Sorrow by the Pretty Things, Ogdens' Nuts from the Small Faces, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and so many others with their influence still resonating in recent records.

Hi Warren! This is so cool to see! My band backed up Arthur from 1992 to 2005, and we played Forever Changes in it’s entirety with strings and horns many times. ‘Forever Changes’ is a true masterpiece, and I don’t say that lightly. It is still timeless today, 54 years later. I still listen to it often and marvel at both the beauty and ingenuity of the music. ‘Alone Again Or’ gets me every time. Psychedelic rock with horns, strings and acoustic guitars-amazing!

Before they blew up, Love played at a dance at my high school. People weren’t dancing - just standing around in amazement. It was like 2 bands in one. They’d pound you into the ground with something like “7 and 7 is” and follow it with a flute playing “orange skies carnivals and cotton candy “.

I love the song and the entire album, but I wouldn't call the music "psychedelic" unless you use a very broad definition. There are certain songs and certain musical touches that partake of psychedelic, but I think the album is so eclectic with so many musical styles and influences in it that it's wrong to categorize the music as psychedelic. "Alone Again Or" is not the least psychedelic, but it does offer a contrast with so much of the other music being produced at the time. Maybe that's what you're calling attention to.

Don’t think I’ve ever had an album grow on me like Forever Changes. First bought it about 25 years ago on the strength of "Alone Again Or," and it’s reputation as a masterpiece. Must admit I was a bit confounded by the record at first. Wasn’t what I’d expected at all, assumed it would be heavier psychedelic rock. After a few listens, it’s strange melodic hooks lodged themselves in my mind. Find I revisit it often, finding new meaning and nuance every time. Truly an exceptional album, rewards repeated listening.

I bought Forever Changes 40 years ago on spec because of the gushing critical acclaim I'd read on its behalf. It was actually better than I'd been led to believe. A true masterpiece.

I first heard Forever Changes when I was only 14, in 1975. My older brother had bought it, and upon my first hearing I knew immediately it was a classic; a work of genius.

Thank you, Warren for your eloquent history lesson about my favorite band. I grew up near Hollywood and saw Love many times. I got to meet Jonny Echols fairly recently, and spoke with him. What a beautiful, intelligent person. As a musician, I could tell how great Forever Changes was. It definitely ranks with Sgt Pepper and Pet Sounds. Love's live performances at Glastonbury and on Jools Holland are amazing and rekindled my interest in their music. ❤❤❤❤

What a great commentary on Forever changes. I met him after he played at a roadhouse where he played before Spirit and Canned Heat. We were truly fans and after he played and Canned Heat was on stage, I saw him slip out a back door. I told my friend and his girlfriend we need to leave and meet him. He stopped in the parking lot and here were these 3 college students thanking him for inspiring later generations. He was a little taken aback, but was very courteous and humble. We drove back to San Diego silent, knowing we just had a moment in life that we will never forget. That was over 30 years ago.

Hard to believe Forever Changes only reached 154 on the billboard charts. How many top ten albums have been forgotten in history! You gotta give it to Forever Changes and how it is beloved by fans and critics!

I'm a bit of a fan of this record as you can probably tell. In fact I believe it's the greatest album ever made An earlier origin to the album title is that Arthur Lee overheard one of his bandmates splitting up with his girlfriend. Apparently she said: "But you said you'd love me forever" to which he replied, "Yeah, well, forever changes" and later when Arthur believed that he was going to die soon (he had an uncle who'd recently died young) he decided that those would be his final words to the world. You did a marvellous job Warren, thanks for bringing this album to a wider audience.

@@Producelikeapro His Warren, I have to get this in, being a bit of a nerd on the Sunshine Pop genre, which Love were an integral part of - but, for me, it's equalled by The Millennium's 'Begin' - the second album recorded on 16-track, at the Columbia studios, after S&G's Bookends - at that point the most expensive album album ever put to tape. I hope you can find a space for the incredible production of Curt Boettcher at some point... there are many reasons Brian Wilson lost his mind during the making of SMiLE, but I believe one of those reasons was his encounter with Boettcher. If you don't know this album, or it's companion, Sagittarius' 'Present Tense', I implore you to discover them. I guarantee you'll hear the bass drum on the opening track, 'Prelude', and stick around for the rest. Enjoy! ;) p.s. Thanks for this, spreading the word.

I first bought Forever Changes in 1969. Loved it immediately. In about 1980 I went to see Arthur Lee at the Whiskey on Sunset in West Hollywood. Arthur came on stage, saw Bryan MacLean in the front row of the audience and Threw a drink in Bryan’s face! Then Arthur, who was drug addicted, just layer on the stage and said “ Jesus……Jesus……..Jesus….” Most of the audience left ( I was one of the last to go) in the next 15 minutes or so. Cut to 2005. I saw Arthur Lee and his orchestra performing at the House of Blues Disneyland. He was Sober and he was dying. He performed “ Forever Changes” beautifully and powerfully. Thank God I was there to see it! RIP Arthur Lee!

I can't believe I just found this fantastic video now, but better late than never! It beautifully conveys what I have been saying for decades. I bought Forever Changes the day it was released and instantly thought that this was the most magically multifaceted album of the psychedelic era. I still recall the LA Times' music critic's review way back then, who wrote that Forever Changes is the type of record that will remain fresh and withstand endless listenings, words more poignant now than ever. I've turned on so many people to it throughout my adult life that I've lost count, always amazed by how few people have heard of the band. I saw them at the Kaleidoscope in Hollywood, when Neil Young sat in. I saw Arthur perform Vindicator at the Whiskey a Go Go. I was living in Europe when he toured with Baby Lemonade many years later, at a small club in Berlin and shortly after at Royal Albert Hall for the concert that was made into a DVD. Among the many accolades this record has received over the years, the one that strikes me the most was the motion by the British Parliament declaring Forever Changes the greatest album of all time. To think that as poorly known as Love is in L.A., to this day, despite the fact that they were once the kingpins of LA's '60s rock scene, that included The Doors, Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, Forever Changes was given this distinction in the land of the Beatles and Stones.

Beg to differ on one thing. Any L.A. musician worth his salt has been familiar with all LOVE's recordings from the beginning and through every decade since. And Forever Changes may not have charted in the top 40, but you could not walk, drive, or hitch a ride through Laurel Canyon for years without hearing this album echoing all through the hills.

@@tuleebird4637 I was by no means speaking of those old enough to have been around the LA rock music scene more than half of a century ago, nor specifically of musicians. Anyone who drove down Sunset Blvd back then saw a billboard announcing the upcoming then long anticipated release of Forever Changes. In fact, last weekend I performed "A House is Not a Motel" for a private party in West LA and asked about 25 people who were watching to raise their hands if they had heard of "Love" and only 3 hands went up.

I recently read a comment from someone who didn't understand the connection of Forever Changes to psychedelics. It is a bit subtle, but this lyric is an example: "You are just a thought that someone, somewhere, somehow, feels you should be here"

I, a girl resident and child born in Los Angeles County in 1950, purchased this album on the strength of Alone Again, Or my favorite tune during high school. I was solidly in love with this album and with Lee from there on out. Stone cold devoted.

In 1966 my best pal Damien and I were obsessed with LOVE. We dad perfected their special Logo and transcribed it all over the place . We were young actual garage rock and rollers and had all the songs on their first album down pat with harmonies and acoustic and bass. Forever Changes we introduced to my home town on Long Island, and to this day get goosebumps listening to it. Damien went on to play bass with The Third Bardo, another hidden gem whose songs you can find these days online.

I can't describe the sensation when I discovered this album for first time in my life (it was about 10 years ago, now I'm 40). It totally blew my mind. Although I'm a Beatles fan, I didn't know that this album existed, and I couldn't believe how much time I was wasting for no listening to it before. Thanks to RU-vid algorithm I arrived to this marvelous review about my fav album of all the time. Thanks for so much detail on it, I really didn't know a thing about Love, Lee and the album, I just enjoyed everytime I listened to, but now, thanks to you, everything makes more and more sense. I bought FC in 1980, regretful that I’d “missed” the 60’s. I have not stopped listening to it and listened to it twice today on the way home, with my wife who’d never heard it, but loved it…ironically burnt onto the same CD as Buffalo Springfield Again, another comparable favourite. Love refuses to die. Long live Love. It has outlasted even the first Doors record in my frame of interest.

Excellent piece on this brilliant LP, Thank you. Saw Arthur Lee Love Forever Changes Concert in NYC w/ a string section & he & Jonny Echols were both in Top form, spectacular. I just happened to be standing in the venue entrance post show & shook Arhtur's hand as he glided past me w/ a beautiful woman on his arm, a memory I cherish.

My favorite album of all time 😍 so beautiful. Better than anything before or after. Shrouded in mystery and mystique. Nobody remembers much about making it or who played which parts. The core of the album can be played on 2 acoustics . Something so divine about this suite of music and it will always be appreciated by generations of seekers

I'm happy to be able to say that i was a teenager who saw Love albums, the first 3, appear in the store one after the other. I bought the first one because the band looked freaky, but the next 2 were because I really liked the 1st one. I was in the basement with speakers in my ears listening to Forever Changes over and over. It was like taking a psychedelic, but i was tripping for weeks! Amazing!

Jac Holzman (born September 15, 1931) is still alive at age 92. Bruce Botnick, engineer, for Love, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors is still living.. he's around 78. My favorite album too.

First time I ever heard Love's Forever Changes was in a South Texas barracks stationed in the Navy in the fall of 1967 on a portable (Singer?) turntable played by one of the guys in my cube. I was so mesmerized listening to this album which was played over and over along with The Doors first album which I had also never heard before I was hooked "Forever". After leaving the service yrs later and returning to civilian life, I kept telling my civilian contemporaries about this great album, but nobody seemed interested. They had moved on from Psychedelia and the flower power "Love" generation and into heavy Rock and Blues, myself included and all that came afterwards good and bad, but I always had a soft spot for Love-Forever Changes and the dreamy place it's music and lyrics took me away from everything else going on in my life at the time even today.

I want to say as well that where I grew up --- Oahu in the 60s--- was a niche market and Love was very popular there, as were the Young Rascals and Country Joe, Moby Grape and The Dead

In the mid 70's I had a friend who was a huge fan of Authur Lee and Love and we shared an apartment for a while. Forever Changes was on heavy rotation during that period. Great album. Brings back fond memories from long ago.

Forever Changes is one of my favorite records. It was my model for creating my last solo record, Re Imaginos. Thanks for the information. I learned things about it I never knew, such as the involvement of the Wrecking Crew and Neil Young.

Was about 13 in 1980 when found the album amongst the huge pile of records my grandad had "collected" as a Liverpool docker. It was Love revistited. Just loved the logo so he gave it to me. Played it at home and was blown away. Kept it hidden as my secret and told no-one. Bought all the albums and even collected sample albums Elektra made from some great second hand record shops in Matthew street area Liverpool. My secret hey! Imagine my shock at seeing the album Forever Changes in the top ten chart for Mojo. Saw Arthur in Liverpool backed by Shack in 1996...i think. Was rather off me head so barely remember. Saw Love with Baby Lemonade the day after England beat Argentina in world cup...2004?. Shook Arthurs hand and he gave me a plectrum. Seeing them tomorrow in Brighton. Prob last time? We are all lucky to be here and I blow a kiss to all my brothers here(possibly a few sisters too) I'm returning home to Liverpool to live next month after nearly 40 years away. This seems a more than appropriate swan song. 🦢😂

Great commentary. Love Love. I grew up in LA during it's period but was younger. I had older brothers who jumped on the Love train and heard the first three albums all the time. Wish I could've snuck into the Whiskey to see them and then the Doors. Love surprising friends with this secret gem. The band will live on during our Forever Changes.

This was an album that pretty much everybody I knew who was a teenager during the nineties and played in guitar bands owned. You can hear the influence it had on early Primal Scream and also Teenage Fanclub etc.

saw him perform this album several times including glastonbury festival. in the early 70's this got played at least once a day.

I was around in the '60s, and bought this album late 60s or early 70s. It was psycedelic and featured acoustic guitar with string/wind backing. It was totally different from anything else at the time. My LPs Forever Changes and De Capo must be worth a lot now.

Top drawer album, seen Love live in Liverpool in 90s, recently went to see Johnny Echols twice, also in Liverpool. Influenced so many local bands but they go under the radar, brilliant band and brilliant album 👌

Echo and the bunnymen's album "Ocean Rain" is clearly influenced by Forever Changes and by The Doors too, by the way. The Damned recorded a cover of Alone Again Or in the 80s. It was through these works that I discovered this band.

What a find!! This video is great! Thank you! Forever Changes is the album that changed my life. I first discovered this record 37 years ago thanks to my Dad who left it when he left my Mum (every cloud eh?!) I was amazed and it opened my mind and life to the world of music. It remains my favourite although I've been blessed with legendary band of my lifetime particularly Stone Roses and Oasis and Nirvana (I'm a proud generation X!) so thank you Love and particularly Arthur Lee ❤

This is my fave music video, ever. An outstanding tribute to my favorite album, ever. You’ve caught as many key points as one could in 20 mins and clarified issues that are oft subject to speculation re the album, Lee and the group. Many personal points of contact. Heavy play on my turntable made this the most popular album among my friends by 1969. It still remains a lingua Franca amongst us. I saw the 2003 Royal Festival Hall concert, which was incredibly strong - even better than the album despite Lee’s long incarceration. I was outside the Beacon before the 2006 benefit concert, but it was sold out! Thank you for your superb insights. Subscribed and shared.

I want to make a case for thefirst record of Lloyd Cole and theCommotions : Rattlesnakes At the time I found it a very welcome antidote to all the heavy handed,sombre Joy Division ,New Order Bauhaus sort of music that came out at the time. In fact I find the record sounds still as fresh as ever!

I appreciate the respectful, articulate and straightforward sketch of Love's history as a band and the Forever Changes album in particular. I embraced the album from the time of its release and saw Love perform at a Newport Pop Festival. It's still largely unknown to younger audiences who have become familiar with many of the classic bands and songs of that era, which is sad because Forever Changes is every bit a classic compared with anyone else's production. The "reaction" channels on this site, for example, tend to feature many of the same artists and songs over and over while largely oblivious to a band like Love. So it's not being brought to the attention of audiences that are curious about the fantastic musical period from the mid-sixties to the later seventies--a period that puts to shame most of the undistinguished and often crappy music being lauded by the majority of the younger audience today.

This truly is as brilliant, unique, gorgeous, and cohesive a work as you could ever hope to record. There's the phenomenal arrangements, exceptional musicianship (they never sounded better as a band in the studio), incredible melodies and song structure, singular lyrics, and those voices. There's just so many ideas on that album, and they work. Man, do they work.

Wow. How did I miss this band. In late 60s early 70s was in Hawaii. FM radio stations played the psychedelic/hip genre all the time. Definitely will check "Love" out. Thanks

I still have my vinyl copy bought in Durban South Africa late 60s. Traveling Aussie Surfers turned me on to first Da Capo which they brought with them, and a very hip record shop imported Forever Changes for me. As you say, it fits right in through all the years and generations.

Wow! Thank you for this wonderful piece. I learned so much about one of my favorite albums. I had no idea the wrecking crew recorded on that! I don’t know how I missed that information. I guess I haven’t read very deeply about the band. I’ve watched on doc here on RU-vid. But it seemed to focus more on the bands relationships and mental health, and I’m more interested in the music itself. But I was blessed to be able to see Arthur Lee perform the album live in London in 2002. I think it was at the Queen Elizabeth hall. If I recall correctly I was just so fortunate to be in London because my husband was playing at the Meltdown festival the next night at the same venue. It was really one of the most memorable concerts of my entire life. Thank you for putting this together. I’m subscribing and excited to watch more of your content!

Let's face it, speaking as a 68 yr old African American, the United States was not ready for a black rock star in 1967. Even Hendrix had to go to London first because no one wanted to touch him when he was still in New York. They didn't even want to play Michael Jackson at first on MTV and when they finally did. It revolutionized the industry for black artist. Arthur Lee was influenced by fine artist like The Byrds just as white artist were influenced by Chuck Berry.

This is an interesting perspective. In the same way Tamla was enthusiastically embraced over here in the uk as were Stax artistes. The Beatles, Dusty Springfield and others were great advocates.

This was my soundtrack for a very long time. Huge influence! I mean no other band from the 60's or since sounds like them. I got into them from reading somewhere that Jim Morrison was a fan and I adore The Doors!

Great job discussing Forever Changes ( my fave album of all time) . I was at the Beacon concert hosted by Robert Plant for Arthur Lee. Discovered album in college in 1967 from my roommate. He bought a lock for his turntable bc I couldn’t stop playing it!😊

Awesome overview of this great album--which I bought when it first came out, and without having heard a single track in advance, since I trusted the group and the studio wizards at Elektra. I immediately worshipped it and for years considered it one of those best-kept secrets that fans have for beloved works that few in the general populace are aware of. Since then, the enshrinement of Forever Changes as an all-time classic has been most gratifying for me, partly in an "I told you so" way but mostly to see these great creators get the credit they deserve. Thank you again for this comprehensive and fitting assessment and tribute.
