Hugh: So, do you think you naturally have a gift for salesmanship or do you think it something you need to learn in order to be successful?
Alby: Well, um, they put you through a Dale Carnegie Course when you first join the insurance and I never thought I'd sort of come in the theory part, I probably come bottom of the class and I thought hell, you know. And they all thought who is this bloke? He is probably not going to be too good at it. But umm it was a very difficult at the beginning. So I started practicing by talking to pretty girls when I was on my way to work.
Hugh: Not a bad way to start.
Alby: And there was good rewards there because there was some great successes.
Hugh: In terms of selling life insurance?
Alby: No, in terms of chatting up...So, you know, you have to do things that really don't like and you've just got to force yourself to do it. It doesn't matter how much. I have gone after, you know, I meet- see a businessman in the street, you know, comes out of a Mercedes or with the expensive car and I know he is well-to-do and then I feel well I am going to go and talk to him. I am going to get flat nos and get abused or whatever but you just have to. And I have gone to talk to him and I have backed out, gone back to talk to him, backed out and eventually I just do it! I make the biggest goose of myself but I do it and then you get better and better and better and I was selling...like I'd talk to...It was just a numbers game. I'd talk...Most of the guys selling insurance would talk to 2 people a day and maybe every 3 days line up an appointment and maybe in one week sell a policy of they are lucky - they are doing well - but in 2 weeks they might sell 1 or 2. And the company was very happy with that. Well I would go out and speak to 30 people in one day and I would sell one policy a day so 7 a week and it was just unheard of but it was no big deal as far as I was concerned and I have won the dinner every week for selling the most and I ended up having big meetings, conferences, how this dude is selling so many, why? How come? Just told them that, it is just hard work and you know, hang in there and do it you know.

► About Alby Mangels
Alby Mangels is an Australian hero widely known for pioneering the adventure documentary genre. With no training in filmmaking and just $400 in his pocket, he travelled to over 50 countries on an unplanned adventure capturing amazing footage along the way. His first film, World Safari 1, became a surprise hit when released in 1977. And six years later, he did it again with World Safari 2 which instantly shot him to all-time legend status. He released World Safari 3 in 1988, finishing the trilogy which changed the way Australians saw the world and paved the way for others like Steve Irwin and Bear Grylls to follow.

►About The Thread
Two mates sit down with 10 iconic Australians to figure out how they broke away from the pack. Hugh and Jack seek out leaders of wide-ranging fields: adventure, sport, business, philanthropy, medicine, law and literature to uncover the common thread that binds them.
The interview subjects are household names famed for remarkable and well-told stories, but rarely have they been asked how they did it, how they define success and whether anyone can do what they've done.
Armed with meticulous research and uncomfortably simple questions, we elicit intriguing, inspiring and often unexpected insights from an eclectic bunch of trailblazers.

As teen & female watching his doccos I found the travels hugely inspiring but his way of relating to women and their roles starkly oppressive. In the eighties women were expected to be SO submissive- it was hell to witness.

How times have changed. People just make their shows. Chatting up anyone and pretending to be heterosexual is not relevant!!!
