Every year harmful use of alcohol is responsible for 3 million deaths and 5% of the global health burden ̶ from road traffic injuries, violence, abuse and neglect to diseases like liver cirrhosis and some cancers and mental health conditions like alcohol dependence, depression and suicides.
But what can we do about it? This animated video shows solutions to the impact of the harmful use of alcohol through the stories of two fictional countries: one where WHO's “Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol” and the SAFER Initiative have been implemented and one where they have not.

I was an alcoholic for 10 years, I'm not sure because some people say things like "you're always an alcoholic" so I might be wrong. Anyway, so I initially used alcohol as an escape in my very early teens. It was readily available and I wanted to know what it was like, I hated the taste of it but still drank it when I could. It started with me drinking beer and playing video games, it was a "fun" way to escape for a bit. It became excess pretty quickly because now I've realized that I was using alcohol and other drugs as band aids for my untreated PTSD/Bipolar 1 disorder, childhood trauma, and abuse. Things got worse and worse and in 2020 I had an attempt and that was the day I quit. I've been alcohol free since April 14th of 2020 and now looking at or smelling alcohol makes me physically ill. I went to AA soon after I swore off alcohol and it helped quite a bit because I had people who were like myself to discuss these things with, whereas in my family alcohol is very very commonplace. My cousins who I grew up with and their mom drink regularly and very often and leisurely to excess to the point where visiting them for the holidays where we have been doing ritually for my entire life makes me want to stay home instead. Theyve also both had DUIs and drunk driving charges. In all honesty, I'd rather be "alone" and sober than where I was at and drunk. I really enjoyed this video and I think alcohol is probably one of the most dangerous things out there because of how often it's advertised and promoted socially as an "icebreaker" or "party starter". What also makes it especially dangerous is how readily available it is. I remember when I was working and I was of age to buy but my friends weren't and I was taken advantage constantly to get them alcohol and I thought I was doing a good deed and being kind, I did this for strangers if they asked too as well as for rides and cigarettes. I regret that for cigarettes and alcohol because with alcohol I'm actively giving someone a tool to destroy their life and/or someone else's... one of the strongest things but also one of the most rewarding things is to face your problems head on rather than escaping with substances, gambling, etc. It becomes easier with community and people who care about your wellbeing and are supportive. With community, a large boulder on your back becomes a rock that everyone helps carry until it's no longer on your back. Just remember one thing if you suffer from addiction, you are stronger than any other substance out there, and get the help you need and deserve. I love you and take care of yourselve. Take care of yourselves for your self and for the people around you.

Shouldn't Nina be arrested for DUI and involuntary manslaughter, putting her in prison for at least a decade?

Instead of advocating for a police state, you should focus your efforts on convincing people that there is nothing of value to be gained by consuming ethanol. There's a lot of money in intoxication though, and we all know how government works.

Hilarious that you oppose the government taking action and then point to the reason government's won't take action is themselves. Maybe the real opposition is from people who refuse to let governments take action...? nudge nudge, hint hint...

The effects of alcoholism are far-reaching. What is worrisome is the physical dependence in addition to the withdrawal symptoms when the person stops using alcohol. The person with alcoholism often resists the idea that they have a problem and need to stop drinking. It is a social malady that is eating away the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our society worldwide. Not just the health aspect, but studies have revealed that it leads to criminal behavior and violence, which eventually leads to social disorganization. It is a major problem in India especially in the state of Kerala.

Raising alcohol prices seems like a poor way to handle this. Just means rich people get to be alcoholics without consequence while poor people go even more broke than they already usually do.

If nina's community was more like anya's on alcohol restrictions and helping someone who is alcoholic none of this could've been avoided.

If alcohol is bad for health then why goverment is allowing it sell. I live in India and in my city when I was 14-5 years old i saw on very few liquor shops. But now I'm 24 there are so many liquor shops available. Really now the place where only 1 shop was there now there are 4 shops. Demand is there. Similar i will say for tobacco. People die due to tobacco but people still use it. I just don't know why goverment is allowing it to sell. I beleive the reason goverment is allowing it to sell is because goverment cannot stop it. Unfortunate demand for this bad stuff if there so goverment need to stop the demand. But I don't what goverment is doing for that. If goverment will give licence to shops for selling alcohol it is actually making alcohol more easily available. Goverment says alcohol is bad but it's also allowing it to sell.

Banning it will have adverse effect just like prohibition in US ,and it is generating revenue for government that's why they are not stopping it.

Alcohol and tobacco are highly profitable and the heads of these institutions are powerful and can force compromise. Also, people like these things so they will make it hard to ban.

if people want to poison themselves let them have it. As long as it does't efect people who don't want to have ahything to do with it. Which is primarely the reason people are talking, half of the murders are commited be people who were drunk, most fatal car accidents are by people who were drunk. The worst of all its not that they kill themselves, its that they kill somebody else do to their lack of resposability and critica thinking. And this seems just like another issue until one of your family memebers get killed by a drunk driver.

As the next step I suggest WHO banning all art, literature and music as the strong emotions they may arise are likely to trigger cardiovascular diseases, strokes and heart attacks.
