Thank you for this video. People can die or become seriously disabled from inhalation injuries to the lungs. My father had years of petrochemical exposure to his skin. This was before OSHA mandated masks & gloves. He eventually died from non-Hodgkins lymphoma at age 61. He was sick for 5 years. I don’t mean to be all doom & gloom but people don’t realize the hazards of these “craft” items. One more thing...wear goggles. We’re only given 1 set of eyes.

Thank you for talking about this! I started alcohol inks without proper research and noticed my eyes were super dry and a sensation of pressure in the chest then it clicked it was the inks so I did my research and omg reading the SDS sheets of the inks made me realize how harmful they are. More artists with platforms like this should be talking about this. Thanks for this great video!

Thanks for this video. Although a life long artist I am just starting to work with alcohol ink. I haven't seen too many videos where artists are plugging the safety concerns or how to protect yourself. I specifically have a chronic dry eye condition. I do wear glasses but have noticed in the past week how my eyes are really suffering since being exposed. It's time for some goggles to really seal off my eyes. We only get one pair! I was also online last night looking up the dangers of working with alcohol. I had no idea how much alcohol can be absorbed through our skin. Thanks for keeping it real.

Thank you for this video . I’m an ex respiratory nurse and I’m concerned that all us artists and crafters stay safe . Today I went to purchase a respirator with UK statutory requirements under COSH guidelines . I went to reputable suppliers of safety equipnent and was surprised how little they knew about the masks they had for sale . I did purchase a ventilator and replacement filters which meet P3 , 99.95% protection . I’m still not opening this as the info is very vague but I know it’s safe against fumes not just dust . Roll on summer when I can mix outside . I have been trying resin art and need to know what I’m dealing with when I mix alcohol inks with resin . I believe mixing resins causes formaldehyde fumes if it’s a low standard / cheaper composition , also if alcohol is used make sure it is medical type isopropyl alcohol and not denatured alcohol which is often used in industry .. Main issues are skin protection to prevent contact dermatitis and fumes created when mixing art stuff with pigments which can cause respiratory disease and cancers . Great to see you are taking things seriously thank you for you excellent advice . I plan to ring the manufacturers for more advice . Stay safe all ..

Thank you so much Lynda. I've been pretty happy with the 3m Masks. I have just recently went with the full face cover mask with the same filters. The fumes can also affect the eyes as well. I was using safety glasses but the long exposure of Iso fumes will affect the eyes as well by reducing eyesight, blurring vision, dryness, and burning. I will have to create an update to this video soon describing my experience of going to full facemask..

It sounds like the ventilation & mask is more for the alcohol use, is that correct? I’ll be using only the little alcohol inks (I use them to dye Elmer’s glue and paint with that for a stained glass effect), so I’m wondering if it applies to this as well. Will def use gloves though.

do u know how to uv seal and protect alcohol ink outdoor art? Did the most beautiful birds on a wire metal pc i base painted white and it turned out incredible. a yr later barely see any detail due to morning sun about 5 hrs a day.
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
I have a video that shows you how to use Kamar varnish and UV archival spray to protect artwork. However, anything in the sun for a period of time will fade over time. So I don't really advise having any artwork in the sun on a daily basis for more than an hour It's just the pigment will tend to fade over time now there's ways that you can try to seal it with Kamar varnish and that'll help it You could tend to seal it every year to help with the fading. But I do approximately four to six coats of Kamar varnish and three coats UV archival spray before I send my painting to the customer. I have some work that hasn't faded in four years. I'm not sure how my sun is getting. But I also advise not to leave it in the sun or anywhere outdoors where it's exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

Hi! I have just discovered your channel. I know you posted this video a while ago but I do hope you can give me a reply. I do art just for my pleasure. I mainly use water-based markers, watercolor paints and I also get some alcohol-based markerd ( Ohuhu and Promarkers and the basic Sharpies). I only use alcohol markers on a few parts on a drawing (30%) and I use water-based medium or color pencils for the other part (70%). I always open the window when I use the alcohol pens. Even when I stop using them, I let the window opened for 30 extra minutes. I think it would be safer to wear a mask in the future. Do you think a disposable surgical mask would be sufficient? Or a Ffp2?
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
I wouldn't recommend a surgical mask as this doesnt protect you from fumes. The amount of 99% alcohol that we use compared the amount used for markers may not be as much. I would still protect your hands with nitrile gloves. I typically use alot when you watch my videos you can see me pouring it on large Canvas'

@AskariArt

I recommend a mask for all indoor and outdoor uses the fumes dry out your eyes and eventually ruin your lungs. It's bad cause you are usually standing right above it. Acrylic ink is an alternative but acts completely different imo

+marti mac I would use the respirator that I recommend in my safety video for alcohol inks. Just because you can't smell or taste it doesn't mean it can't harm you.An example is there are a lot of poisonous fumes from other chemicals that you cannot smell but can kill you. The filters depend on how often you use them I typically use them a lot so I change them out every three to four months

I create my alcohol ink paintings on a large open-air verandah, and use goggles, nitrile gloves, no pets or other people allowed while I’m out there, and I also use a P2 N95 respirator mask (although I’ve been told I don’t need any type of mask working outside) - do you think working like this is safe enough? I use 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. Also, do you have any clean-up/safe disposal advice or tips?

I honestly don't trust n95 mask for alcohol inks It doesn't filter like the mask I suggest in the video. I use Fast orange to clean my hands after AI. For disposal I typically reuse the alcohol till I'm done.

@@AskariArt Hello, I have a question. Is it safe to make alcohol ink paintings in the apartment where I live in separate room, that no one uses? Is it safe if only window is open and of course with using all the safety equipment as You instructed on the video? I really love this art and I want to start practicing it but I am a little bit concerned with the safety issues for me and my family. Because I have seen people on you tube making paintings in kitchen with safety equipment, and people making them in a basement or a space separate from the house they live in. But I do not have that additional space, neither a balcony... I would really appreciate Your advice :)

@AskariArt 3 года назад
@@monikadimitrieska6237 i make my art in a separate room with my mask gloves and safety glasses. I would not use denatured alcohol in a room if it isn't ventilated since that's highly flammable. I use 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol in my room with window open and safety equipment on. The smell goes away after a few hours after it's dry. Make sure you don't have kids or pets go in that room while it's drying. You can get a room air purifier and have it run to get rid of smell faster. The window open helps alot. But on cold days I don't open window but my room is fairly big.

If I keep my hands or wherever I tattoo using alcohol ink away from flames for a while will it be okay after that? ASLO using it painting on my head? Fingers catching on fire??? What about Sharpies and other brands of permanent markers...they are alcohol inks.
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
They can be just as bad if you get alot on your fingers. The problem is people who are using alcohol inks are mixing them with isopropyl 91%-99% if they are not wearing gloves that tends to get on your hands along with alot more ink on this fingers. I've never had a mess with sharpies as I have had with alcohol inks if there weren't gloves.

I’ve been painting with AI for 10 years. I never wear gloves and setting my fingers on fire has never been an issue. Obviously caution and common sense should be used when painting with alcohol inks. I have good ventilation where I paint. Fan, air purifier, windows. I’m grateful that at 68 years old, I have no health issues. I don’t wear a mask. It’s a choice. There’s too much fear being tossed around in this world. It takes the joy out of living. ❤️
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
@@Artfulearth this video is not about putting fear in people. You're lucky you haven't had any issues alot of people have had issues including myself and I've been doing ai but at large scale 48x60+ Canvas' for 6 years now started in my 30's AI. Everyone is different though. But there's variables here, size of painting, % of ISO amount of exposure, and size of room all make a difference as if you will have a reaction or not. It's a fact that the alcohol inks are toxic, copic and Tom Holtz alcohol inks have SDS sheets that they are required to release by law because of thier toxicity. Most people don't know this and it should be mentioned, I see alot of issues that people post on forums and in these comments where the alcohol ink and alcohol is causing breathing issues or skin issues. Read some of the comments on this video. Oil Paint back in the old days had lead in it and people didn't care or know it was toxic, it didn't affect everyone, but it didn't turn out well for most of them. Van Gogh is an example, they suspect him having lead poisoning from his oil paints, he nibbled on paint chips. Haha that's a little extreme. My intent isn't to scare people but for them to know how they can be safer if they experience issues so that they can continue to paint.
@Artfulearth
@Artfulearth 3 года назад
I totally agree with you. You use a lot of alcohol on your large works. That can definitely affect people. It’s my hope that people wouldn’t be put off even trying alcohol inks based on their fear.
