Hi Askari Art! I'm new to yr chanel, so new i don't even know yr name! Want to let u know that already you're a great source of info & inspiration for alcohol inks. This morning i watched yr Copic swatch test. I really appreciate yr demo-ing and then sharing the results of these experiments; I only wish i had seen it one day sooner- before my Copic spree. You ve helped convince me that alcohol inks are worth another try. I had given up on using them for anything other than resin tinting. I was never satisfied with the random, unintentional nature of their beauty. I wanted to spend more time with each piece which always led to frustration bcuz, as we all know-you can only control what's control-able! and alcohol inks are not, for the most part, control-able. but you have given me some ideas for how to work with these inks so that i can create pieces that have both intention and spontaneity when finished. I don't know if i will be successful in rekindling my relationship with them, but i do know that you have made it seem possible, and provided me some solid direction. We will see. either way i thank you for your generosity of both time & spirit. Be well, stay safe. Anna.... in the other "frisco". (don't tell any natives i said that! lol )

I call it "slip-slap"...the X movement you made while painting Kilz on the canvas....at the top where you said the inks would go.... Thank you very much for this. I had been spray painting them with a good gloss white. In fact, I will take a canvas and put texture on it with various gels, and pastes. Then I coat it with Aileen's Tacky Glue, and "burn it" by holding it upside down over a candle or oil lamp flame, until it bubbles up and gets all sooty. As it cools and dries, I manipulate the areas I want, let it dry and harden. Spray it again with the white gloss spray paint, several times. and then use AI to create the art. Adding more glue, burning, and repainting, it can happen with great results....You can protect it with resin or varnish it.

This was very helpful and thank you so much for you honesty and being raw with us! Question though I know you mentioned using kilz stain sealer but can stain sealer spray also work instead of buying the paint. I just think it would be easier to use a spray as I’m still new to the alcohol ink side. I mostly just use acrylics and resin but wanna get into alcohol ink art too 😁
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 2 года назад
Honestly, the spray is more expensive and it takes longer. You can seal canvas with Kilz2 really quickly. I haven't used a spray but you would think that it would take many more coats of the spray because it's much thinner every application

Thank you so much for such a kind comment. Yes, I've sanded and applied kills to Michaels and hobby lobby canvases. I'll just be very cautious not to sing through the canvas so you want to make sure you applied kilz2 first then you can sand lightly and do it two more times

Hi, I just found your channel and it’s awesome, love your work! I’ve never tried alcohol ink before but I’m very eager to test it out! I have a few questions: Since I’m just starting out, I was wondering if the typical canvases sold at Michaels/Hobby Lobby (with a few pieces of wood on the back) would be okay to use. I’m not very knowledgeable on types of canvas but I’m curious if the store bought material can withstand the alcohol since it seems a bit flimsy. - Overall, could I create a somewhat quality piece of art if I use the kilz/sanding technique in your video on a store bought canvas? Secondly, I would greatly appreciate a list of necessity materials needed when starting out, while still wanting to produce quality pieces - maybe your favorite brand of ink / any handy tools. (sorry if this is covered in another video!) Thank you so much!

Looking forward to learning this new technique…love the spontaneity and surprising effects you manage to achieve with alcohol inks…Question: you recommend buying the Coptic 100 Black …are these markers filled with the same alcohol inks in small bottles and can be refilled? Why is this Black marker so $ … do other smaller ones of Coptic markers work the same? Thanks!
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
+Cindy Jones thanks Cindy, I recommend the copic black marker refills they aren't the actual markers. Black 100 price has sky rocketed and I recommend using the Tim Holtz black. you can use markers but I would recommend it I would recommend the droplets.
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 2 года назад
+Cindy Jones yea unfortunately copic is very expensive Because it's high in pigment I've had a lot of trouble finding the black 100 I did buy the marker but unfortunately it doesn't work the same as the refills because the marker doesn't put down enough ink and the best way to start the painting is to put the ink onto alcohol that's already on the canvas and a markable dry out and won't release the ink into the alcohol

Love watching your videos! I've picked up many wonderful tips! Do you have a preference on type of canvas you use? I've primed mine with Kilz2, sanded, primed again, but still have an issue with the flow. I'm wondering if its the canvas I'm using? (On tight budget and as I'm just starting out, have just been purchasing canvases from Michael's as they are relatively inexpensive) I don't know a lot about different types of canvas, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Donna
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
Hey Donna, Thank you for the wonderful comment. I really don't have a preference on canvas by sanding it I think you can get a really smooth surface. The flow may not be due to the canvas it may be due to not using enough alcohol to move the ink. And that just takes practice. Or the air that you're using to move the ink around is it set to hot? Cuz you want to use cold air it reduces the drying time.The other advantage to using canvas is if you don't like something or if you're having trouble you can always apply kilz2 right over it and start over or you can use alcohol and try to lift what you had. The flow is quite different than yuppo paper or plastic poster board, It takes a little time getting used to but you can always reset with Canvas by either applying kilz2 on top of it or applying alcohol and just lifting all of it and wiping it away

I was planning on doing my painting on a birch wood panel but am not sure if that will work with the techniques you have taught me...
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 2 года назад
This example is a regular canvas wrapped around a wooden stretcher frame. If you want to do bitch panel you need to seal it with clear kilz if you want to retain the wood look if you want to keep it white you can use Kilz2. You will also need to sand it super smooth

Thank you! Did u add 2 or 3 coats of Kilz 2 primer? And after the last coat of primer, did you sand again? Also, Copic ink refills are now half the size they used to be. Any idea where to get reasonable inks?
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 3 года назад
I do 2-3 coats and sand in-between each coat so I have a smoother surface. You technically don't have to have too many coats. If you do sand make sure it's not your last step before inking. Always make sure Kilz2 is your last step. When you sand you rub the kilz2 off and that takes away the protection. The sanding is for smoothing the surface.

P-100 filters are HEPA that is only dust or particulate. The half-face respirator you displayed had a yellow label and a magenta cover. What this means is the magenta signifies a P-100 filter for particulate. But the yellow label means it captures the solvent VOCs (fumes) of the alcohol or paint. You can buy a cartridge that is magenta with a black label. The black label means it will capture organic odors only. Organic odor is skunk odor, rotting food, or compost odor. Odor means something most of us hate. Fragrance is a smell most of us enjoy. If you’re using a respirator cartridge and you can smell the odor it means your respirator is not fitting correctly or the cartridge needs to be changed. Just so you know.

At the end you were gonna come back and do some alcohol ink painting on top and I’m just looking for that video to see what it looks like after the kilz2... Ps. Thank you SO SO MUCH for this video. It is so helpful for us “beginner” artists on a tight budget.

So if I sand down a canvas already primed, I can reduce the grain, and then re-apply gesso to have a smoother surface? Sorry, I do not have any idea of priming, or oil... I buy canvases already primed, and I use acrylics, but I love what you do...
@AskariArt

Roxana, Alcohol ink painting is a little different in nature than acrylics and oils. Because we want to move the ink around and make it look fluid and lift it if you don't like it. So to answer your question, yes the already primed canvas doesn't work from my experience of using alcohol ink. Depending on the gesso that was used to prime, can vary but I don't risk it because in most instances I've tested the ink doesn't lift off to move it around. I always sand it 1-3 times and apply Kilz2 water-based primer in between the sanding and as the last step then and start inking. Hopefully this answers your question.

Hi Askari! Thank you so much for this video it was very helpful. I did try to use some alcohol ink on a canva doing everything you recommend to do however, I was wondering if it happened to you that on some parts of the canva, the ink doesnt dry completely and some other parts it does dry completely. Thank you so much for the support and the coffee! Yeah you can paint over acrylic. You just have to make sure that you sand it down so that none of the acrylic shows through the varnish. You could just put some white paint on top of the acrylic paint and sand it down and then put another layer of white and then you should be ready to do some alcohol ink

I have an acrylic painting I did the other day and at the end, I didn’t like how the colors came out. It’s a pretty big canvas and it would be a shame not to use it. Can I do this technique on that canvas and do alcohol ink instead? Thank you!
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 2 года назад
acrylic paint depending on the kind of paint. if it's the artist acrylic paint it will not work. The alcohol will turn the acrylic paint into a gum and it won't dry. The paint that I'm referring to is water-based, acrylic wall paint and paint you buy from a hardware store and even those are finicky. what I would recommend is to sand the acrylic down paint a sealant or a base like Kilz2 or b.i.n. shellac and do your alcohol and painting on a new finish. Don't throw your canvas away. You can reuse it by sanding it and putting a new white coat on top
