Alcohol withdrawal was the worst experience I've ever had in my entire life. I used to drink 7-12 beers every single day sometimes more for almost 4 years or so and I stopped cold turkey unfortunately, and went through absolute HELL is the best word I can use. I had massive anxiety all day, depression, brain tingling, headaches, body aches, heart and chest pain, and honestly one of the worst parts of the whole thing was the panic attacks though I had to go to the ER about 10-15 times and finally went into a rehab facility this went on for about 4-5 months til I found the right medication. I am now sober and have been for about almost 2 years. I occasionally miss having a beer with friends or in a family function but I will never, EVER want to go through that again. It was the worst time of my entire life. Just thought I'd share my story of withdrawal.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I went through the same thing myself. Glad you're better now. I shook so much in the mornings, I dropped wine glasses. I always promised myself I'd decrease my drinking gradually, day by day just to ease withdrawal symptoms. I'd do that for a few days and then start drinking the bigger amounts again. The withdrawal was just so uncomfortable. I was almost going into a fit in hospital and was given Diazepam. I stayed in for 4 days to get detoxed properly.

I can only speak for myself and this is what happened to me. I was born to old parents in a small village in 1976. Drinking back then was like part of the culture. Everyone did it. I got my first drunk when i was 14 years old stealing and mixing my old mans liquor. Of course it did not agree with me so i puked it all back up... And so it was for many of my friends. Alcohol was always part of something that we did even as kids, teenagers, young adults. etc... Now all these years later.. What did it really give me?... One marriage ruined, a long term relationship before that down the drain, as well as friendships destroyed. Job opportunities ruined. Loosing myself totally to the point i dont know who i was anymore or what i wanted other than to drink that drug. This did not happen over night though. No no.. This was progressive over years and years. And since it was normal in the cultural climate i grew up in i was none the wiser to its damaging effects. But one day i was right there smack in the middle of it and in a moment of clarity i stopped and asked myself... How the F did i get here really... I was robbed of everything in life and i did not understand why or i did not even at that time want to confess to myself that i was an alcoholic. That is how screwed up i was mentally from drinking for so many years because i thought it was something that was normal. Now being 5 years sober, i still have blame and guilt and depression. I am a work in progress but i am doing better but some days are just hard to cope with. Not that i have an urge to drink because i don't, but what drinking alcohol did to my life and how it affected others that i love and care about for so many years. That is the really hard part for me to cope with. Aka Myself. It is true what they say though... You have to reach that point where you come to the cross roads. David Bowie did, Alice Cooper did, Iggy Pop, Duff Mckagan did, etc etc and they are better people for it... But if you ask me... I really wish i didn't. Because it is horrible and i never wanted it to go that far. The worst of alcohol withdrawal is over in a week more or less. Then yes you can have some PAWS.. But the real struggle is mending back together all the relationships, all the things you destroyed and all the relationships and friendships lost and gone when you were under the influence. That is the real struggle. I will end with this: There is no shame in being an alcoholic. The only shame is being one and doing nothing about it. Thank you.

I have drank heavily almost every weekend from the age of 16 with little to no hangover symptoms, I am 27 now and only in the last couple of months being hungover I feel HUGE anxiety, literally cant relax or be around people and feel like I'm gonna have a panic attack at any moment, the only other substance that used to give me panic attacks before I quit was weed but that was while I was actually high and not after. I actually used to drink alcohol while I was smoking so that I wouldn't freak out. I am 4 weeks sober now and the anxiety is starting to disappear. so basically the same reason I quit smoking weed is the same reason I am now quitting alcohol. Gonna live that sober life 😇

Alcohol withdrawals are nothing to play with. Days after quitting alcohol on July 10, 2021, I've experienced "minor" withdrawals and some hallucinations. It was no fun, but I got thru them at home and work. It was probably due to tapering off for a few months until the quit date. I used to drink at least 4 beers and/or 3 mixed drinks per day for 14+ years. But, still, waking up in sweat, having weird "drinking" dreams, itching and some vomiting (I've developed acid reflux due to years of heavy drinking and overeating) was kicking my butt. As of today, I'm 376 days clean and sober and 35 1/2 years old. Ain't going back to that mess ever again. I refuse to pick up alcohol or any other addictive substance.

I'm a little over 60 hours into my detox, just thought I'd share my experience. I'm about 1 year into HEAVILY drinking, around 12+ shots of vodka a day, 26 y/o male. Had no idea what to expect, but within the first 24 hours, the first noticeable symptom I experienced was anxiety. I hadn't really known what it felt like before, but I almost immediately recognized it. Which was almost a healthy experience because I have a better understanding and compassion for people who suffer with anxiety go through. My skin would also flush and itch with almost any exercise. Was very difficult to eat anything as well. But by far, and still going through this, is insomnia. It's been incredibly difficult to get any kind of sleep, even with alcohol-free Zzzquil. Also experienced some minor auditory hallucinations about 48 hours in, but besides the insomnia, most symptoms have stopped. My appetite is back, skin hasn't flushed a bit, and no further anxiety or hallucinations. I'd consider the first day the hardest by far, if you can make it past that, you got this. I also understand my drinking had only lasted around a year, so my symptoms could be much more minor than others, but just thought I'd share my experience. Thanks for the video, helped a lot!

Quit alcohol just over a month ago. Was drinking about 6-8 drinks every night, usually in a high percentage beers that I’d drink very quickly. Always woke up hungover, but I’d been so used to it for 2.5-3 years that it hardly ever bothered me much. Except that it affected my performance in college and I was a shut in. Woke up about a month ago feeling rougher than usual. Fine for the first few hours of the day then bam; instant withdrawal started. Very intense anxiety and ‘sense of doom’ for lack of a better word. I felt so bad that I didn’t even want to drink that night and knew that I had a problem. First 3-4 days were absolute HELL. Hot sweats, cold sweats, borderline panic attacks, intense stomach pain, insomnia, minor auditory hallucinations , and minor visual hallucinations. I had to deal with all that while going to classes and work as well…. It literally felt like I was going insane. I somehow did all of that without any help from a doctor or friends. PAWS started happening about a week ago and I’ve been seeing my doctor and will soon start therapy. Some tips: natural sleep aids like melatonin and chamomile will be your best friend, cut down on sugar and caffeine as much as possible, eat healthy, get some sunlight, exercise, maintain a steady sleep schedule, distract yourself with healthy activities such as a hobby, and most importantly SEEK HELP. Don’t let pride get in the way of recovery. If I had known just how serious quitting alcohol was I would’ve sought help IMMEDIATELY. Get into therapy, AA, talk to friends and loved ones, or even better all of those! I’d be lying if I said that quitting is easy; it’s not. In fact, its probably the single hardest thing I’ve had to do in my almost 25 years on Earth. I still have a long ways to go, but I’m determined to stay on track because I NEVER, EVER want to experience this again. Its never too late to seek sobriety and not impossible. Wish me luck!

28 year old male, drank half a fifth of makers mark everyday after work and would wake up and take a shot or two before work and on the weekends it was drink all day till I passed out and then wake up and drink till I passed out again. I would be stopping at the liquor store just about everyday. I recently was diagnosed jaundice so I’ve quit cold Turkey. Day 1 was not as bad as I thought it would be Day 2 I lost my appetite and began feeling nauseous all the time, Day 3 I felt fine for the most part but my anxiety has been through the roof to the point I think I have medical conditions I don’t have. On the upside my skin has started to clear up and no longer gets red spots on it after a shower, sleep is still hard to get. Today is Day 4 and I feel like I’ve gotten hit by a Mac truck, I throw up anything I consume I feel dizzy and I woke in the middle of the night covered in sweat. I’ve binged drank weekly and suffered from alcohol withdrawal for 10 years. I used to drink for up to 3 days but it ended up being up to 7 days consuming (and forgetting) my whole week. I’d be aware only on day 2 and then something would completely take over me and I’d go into a braindead program to just drink and drink without thought. 3 months ago before the virus, I had the worst withdraw effects of my life after consuming 10 litres of Smirnoff and a case of Fosters throughout a week. It lasted 6 days and included all the regular stuff such immense feelings of anxiety, dread, auditory hallucinations, visual hallucinations, closed eye visuals, palpitations, racing thoughts, dizziness, hot and coldness and dripping wet with sweat. This time around, my CNS was completely and utterly shattered. I had to hold onto every things in the rooms (from bed to kitchen) to attempt to pour a glass of water. I managed it and as soon the pint glass was full, my body went into an uncontrollable frenzy. I had a fit. The water went all over expensive electrical equipment. I emptied the pint glass completely by violent shaking. Ongoing insomnia prevented me from sleeping and I could’t close my eyes without seeing peering, evil eyes and a stream of insane, random images as if Wikipedia and other peoples conversations were being streamed through my brain. I couldn’t look at anything or watch TV because my eyes felt like they were pulling out their sockets. I was literally in a no-win hell. I knew the only way was to endure it and ride it out, rolling around on the bed, sitting up (with crazy, huge convulsions doing so), then lying back down to somehow attempt to get one moment of peace. I was quite literally pleading to God for it to come to an end. It took around 5 days, gradually getting better, with one symptom disappearing one by one. I couldn’t hold a glass to my face, couldn’t use the phone, nor answer ongoing annoying iMessages. I was hearing conversations in electrical buzzes coming from the kitchen - women whispering as I passed trying to walk to the toilet to violently vomit anywhere but my bed and carpet which already had fresh pools and dried areas of sick. I said over and over again, aloud ’Never again! Never again!’. Unfortunately I witnessed a death recently and I hit the bottle with the intention of just doing one night (I had done a few of these successfully), but I went down the old slope once again with that same thing taking over. Although I only 4 litres of vodka and around 8 cans (in contrast to my last experience), this too was hell. On top of the usual symptoms, I witnessed extreme visual hallucinations. I looked up at the painting at end of my bed (Bathers 2 - Paul Cezanne) and the whole scene of people turned into a vivid animated scene of debauchery, akin to Sodom & Gomorra. Hell was literally playing itself out. Amongst this, I went to the toilet for the umpteenth time to be violently sick. This time the wretch was extra violent and I thought to myself that I’m surprised my innards aren’t coming up. Low and behold, I witnessed a sizeable spurt of blood. I expected to see this in my stools and confirm something serious, so my anxiety and dread was tenfold. Thankfully all seemed well, but naturally that probably wasn’t something minor - not to mention all mentioned symptoms. This time, it lasted 3 days and nights with no sleep. I slept for 4 hours yesterday and I now feel normal today. The grace of life returns once again and I feel reborn and raring to go. I need to embrace this feeling. We don’t appreciate health until we don’t have it. This really needs the mark the final, final time and I’m the only one that can make it so. Keeping my head in my self employed job (which I previously only worked on and off) and my interest in music is hopefully going to be my saviour in this venture. I can’t repeat, nor emphasise it enough. The alcohol withdraw experience is quite literally a living hell. The infuriating thing is, is my willingness to now try and share my issue, telling friends and family of these experiences to try and justify why I am the way I am, only to be greeted with such responses as (and I quote)…..’When I’m hungover, I just have a banana and a bit of toast’….

You should remember this every time you think it’s just going to be “one night” of drinking. It never is and never will be. The hangover of death will visit you the next day and your body will start screaming for that bottle all over again. If you cave, you’re right back into the vicious cycle. If you don’t cave and suffer through the hangover and depression, you will start to believe that you can handle having another drink because last time wasn’t so bad. It’s a cycle that only ends when you stop picking up a drink.

Really do stop. It is so easy not to see the bad things that will start to happen to you. And you will try to cure them only with more drink. Slowly, over time. Your body will become more tolerant to alcohol, being a "bit" drunk will become total norm for you. The way out is tough and leaves behind a lot of tears and pain, not just yours. Don;t believe you will be the lucky one, that will be able to manage it forever. This is the worst mistake which you will realize few years in future when life will be miserable more and more. Stop while you can, it is worth it. You do not need alcohol, it is simply not necessary.

Me too....started in Aug 2019. I can't stop though. If I don't have a drink at least every 3 hours, I start withdrawing. I don't even get shit-faced, just need a baseline so I don't withdraw. God-damn, why did scotch have to be so tasty to me? It started as a hobby, now it's a habit.
@alivohereiam3780

@@jvincent1446 go for something lighter, go for beer or just something softer. It will work. Don't overthink too. Because of some lil feeling in your stomach you don't need to down one shot. Many times it is just craving. And yes, it's the nerves too. Your brain is playing with ya. And do not convince yourself you can't stop. Of course you can. But more and longer you drink the harder it will be. I had tough withdrawal some time ago. My heart was racing 110 beats per minute, during the day, at night, during sleep...my blood pressure was constantly 165/120. I could not sleep properly as I had sort of hallucinations and act of falling asleep actually woke me up as I felt like I am falling. (btw this is because of constant bad sleep.) My nerves were wrecked, I was super scared and had to play it cool because of kids. Nobody at home had an idea I was drinking a bottle a day. It lasted 6 horrible days and nights. Then it stopped. I was out. For good four months, best 4 months in a long time (years). Then I started again but way less. My body tolerance for alcohol was still high and I was giving it more and more until a point where I started to be nervous that I will end up like last time. So I stopped completely.

Wow. I told my doctor I was quitting alcohol, and she didn’t prepare me for any of this. lol. After the first few days of abstinence, I fell into a deep depression. My GP had prescribed me fluoxetine, but even if I had taken it, there’s next to no chance it would have had a benefit. And given all that the patient usually experiences a number of undesirable side effects long before any kind of therapeutic effect starts to manifest, taking the fluoxetine could have had.a tragic outcome. For some strange reason, while the depression was really bad, I downed a 125 mg capsule of magnesium citrate and a mega dose of B complex. Within an hour I started feeling better. I truly wasn’t expecting to have to have gone through such a low period. I’m 14 days in. I guess I’ve seen the worst of it.

One time after a bender in Vegas I got home and didn't drink at all, and went through about 2 weeks of hell. I could barely get in any sleep because the anxiety was so high, when I did get some sleep I had super vivid nightmares and would scream myself awake, I couldn't keep any food down, my heart/chest felt full of pressure. I had only drank alcohol and energy drinks the whole time there so I was coming down from all that caffeine too which made things worse. I was only 21 at the time. I don't drink every day, but go out with friends every fri/sat and often times day drink on Sundays and also sometimes go out during the week. This past weekend was 4th of July and there was a lot of drinking for 3 days in a row. Last night I got zero sleep and was sweating uncontrollably and had some anxiety. I was finally able to take a nap after being awake for 24 hours and it was constantly interrupted by waking up every 15 minutes or so. I don't need alcohol every day or anything, but when I go on these multiple day drinking sessions, I feel like the withdraw symptoms are pretty awful and I have the strangest and sometimes freaky dreams. Having drinks such a big part of my social/family circle. But I think when I drink I just need to limit myself to a drink or two and can be Social without going through all these negative withdraw symptoms. Anyways, that is going to be my plan going forward.

If not for my social life and circle I can probably say I would drink one weekend every 2-3 weeks. Just when I go out I tend to over do it, which leads me here lol. I don’t think I need to stop drinking completely but my relationship with alcohol most definitely has to get better, there’s a level of respect I need to have for myself and for the alcohol, can’t just be binge drinking like that. It’s so not worth this hell you go through to try and get back to normal, the insomnia is the worst, can sleep for more than 15 minutes without my body jerking me back awake or my breathing taking a slight pause. These withdrawal stretches are unbearable. You're incapable of doing the most basic tasks and the physical and mental pain is extreme. Never had straight up hallucinations but the extreme anxiety is up there, my brain cherry picks all the worst/most negative moments in my life and plays it over and over. Never tried to take my life (nor do I have any plans of that) but in these withdrawal stretches, my mind certainly works overtime trying to convince me that not only should I do that, but that I deserve it. I told myself to stop drinking entirely after I went to a rehab for 35 days but it keeps pulling you back and once the withdrawal symptoms kick in it's basically impossible to stop unless you get some sort of medical help.

5:00 interesting about admission. We always admit patients with etoh intoxication especially with +BAL regardless they want to be admitted or not. So far, I never had a patient refused admission... I read an mediolegal article that these patients cannot safely consent to be discharged until their BAL is negative as they are clearly under the influence. The article pointed out that a patient was discharged from the ED, had an accident of some sort and proceeded to sue the hospital and provider for discharging him and won... Yikes.
@StrongMed
@StrongMed 5 лет назад
Thanks for the comment! If a patient is brought in to our ER while intoxicated, they are usually held until no longer clinical intoxicated - at which point they are asked if they wanted to undergo monitored "detox". If they said no, they don't get admitted. I think the difference in some practice environments is how the still-intoxicated patient is handled. Our ER (EDIT: that is, my former ER; I've since moved to a hospital with a much busier ER!) is usually less busy than most, so we have space for patients to wait while they sober up. But I can imagine that in a super-busy ER that doesn't have that luxury, the docs need to decide whether to discharge a still drunk patient or admit a patient who won't want to be "detoxxed" (or be in the hospital at all) as soon as they are sober. Obviously, the ER will be biased towards the latter, while the inpatient medical service will be biased towards the former. Regarding the issue about intoxicated patients not being able to consent to be discharged, the issue is more that an intoxicated patient may lack the capacity to decline medical treatment that is recommended (i.e. an intoxicated patient wants to leave the ED AMA while the ED doc wanted to admit them). The ED cannot allow that. But if the ED doc is recommending the discharge of an intoxicated patient, there's no issue about consent per se since a patient (intoxicated or not) doesn't need to consent to a ED discharge. Whether discharging a still-intoxicated patient is a good idea is a separate question, and the doc could still be potentially sued because a bad outcome if they made a poor medical decision. One more layer of complexity to decisions regarding admission of intoxicated patients is that an elevated BAL does not correlate well with clinical intoxication, and is not a great surrogate for medical capacity. (i.e. a patient with a BAL of 100 mg/dL may be "legally drunk" - that is, unable to drive - but still be cognitively intact enough to consent or decline medical treatment).

I use Nicotine rolling papers. i’m currently tackling one thing at a time. Usually I drink for a couple of months & then I’ll go a couple of months cold turkey. Although I don’t really consider myself an alcoholic I just have bad binging moments that includes food, sugar I used to weigh almost 300 pounds in high school. I stopped eating red meat & worked out My weight would then fluctuate from around 200 to 185. So I went vegan Years later for around 7 months to get to my goal weight 155. But due to stress binge eating & drinking for months my weight climbed to 190. I quit drinking & went vegan again & now I lost a lot of weight I haven’t weighed myself myself but can see a great visible difference. Drinking had kept me in that negative binge eating cycle. I spent thousands on DoorDash 😅 ikr picture that 😮I cook my own vegan keto food now. I plan on doing this vegan no sugar detox no drinking For as close to 3 months as possible. & if I do decide to drink again It’s only going to be a twice a month thing maybe 3 lol. I will never drink Monday through Friday for months on end again. I hope this helps ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED ❤ healing to everyone! I believe anything including this can be overcome with the power of Jesus Christ & God because it may be a spiritual battle as well. I read quite a few stories Of people hallucinating & seeing demons because of alcohol withdrawal..I never knew it was that deep again peace love & healing for everyone in Jesus name.

There are a few ideas for stopping alcohol quickly Try to eat food while you are drinking - this cuts down the amount you drink. Take a break from drinking. Keep track of how much you drink, then you know if you are cutting down. Set yourself goals - don't make them too hard at first. Pick 1 or 2 days or every week when you will not drink at all. Next, try to stop drinking for one week each month. (I discovered these and the reasons they work from Adoette drink plan site )

I’m 19 and went thru this about a year ago I quit all my drugs I was taking at the same time I was drinking about 3-4 liters of vodka daily for 3 months and I’m very lucky to have not got alcohol poising. they are some pretty miserable withdrawals. alcohol is a opioid and more ppl need to realize this before they start binge drinking. I was completely unaware of what I would go thru and was sure it was the drugs making me withdrawal. be responsible y’all and don’t go cold turkey. if you are drinking a around even 10 beers daily you shouldn’t go thru much tho especially if you are use to other opioid withdrawals ignore some of the people in the comments if you have dealt with any other opioid (oxys, Vicodin, ect) abuse and withdrawals before this should be a walk in the park for you. just handle the sweats, shakes & go to the ER if you really need it but yeah don’t be scared to quit cause of these dudes in the comments 🤦‍♂️

I used to drink a lot before. I've been sober about 7 months. I suspect the alcohol has damaged my brain a bit (gaba receptors etc). I feel better now than I did when I first decided to quit but I still deal with some anxiety and depression though I probably had that to a smaller degree while I was drinker also but I just didn't notice it then. I think my brain is slowly recovering. Would I set my recovery back or damage my brain receptors etc more if I were to use benzodiazepines for example in small amounts maybe once a month?

I can't offer specific, individualized medical advice on here, and I recommend that you speak to your primary care physician or psychiatrist about how you are feeling. Different patients have different medical histories and situations, and for something as important as this, you would want advice from a medical professional who knows you well. However, having said that, in general, I personally would *never* recommend outpatient use of a benzodiazepine in a patient in recovery from alcohol dependence.

Very useful info for any one treating et oh withdrawal . Particularly: Thiamine before Glucose . "Banana bag" or IV vitamins in a glucose- saline infusion turns the IV bag yellow colour hence the name of the protocol .It is still used in many places. I saw many elderly with et oh withdrawal . Quantity of et oh consumption should be elicited on admission ( 1 or2 glasses of wine in an elderly , dehydrated, emaciated patient are more than enough to cause severe DT when et oh consumption is discontinued ) . Elevated level of et oh in blood on admission can be a risk factor for severity of withdrawal later .

@cornelbacauanu1544
@cornelbacauanu1544 5 лет назад
@@manbpaudyal217Why Alcoholics Should Receive Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) by IV Before any Glucose Infusions  It is well known that chronic alcoholics are at high risk for being deficient in vitamin B1 (thiamine), which is known to put the patient at an increased risk for Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, cerebellar degeneration, and cardiovascular dysfunction.  The current standard of treatment for such patients is to give them thiamine 100 mg intravenously (IV) before administering glucose containing IV fluids and then to continue this dose for several days.  The inability of pyruvate to enter the TCA cycle causes the cell to convert the pyruvate to lactate (or lactic acid) in order to be able to maintain glycolysis at a minimum rate. Therefore, if you feed the cell more glucose without giving the needed thiamine to allow for the forward movement of cellular reactions for complete ATP generation, you only increase the amount of lactic acid produced.  This development of acidosis, the inability of the pentose phosphate pathway to protect the cell from reactive oxygen species that damage cellular structures and the mounting stress on the cell overall, results in either cell death or activation of apoptosis.

I have a long history with alcohol and know many alcoholics, I never heard of anyone being detoxed with Valium. I thought that was oldschool. Always Adivan or Librium. I've been detoxed with both. From my experience as a patient Librium is the best medication for alcohol withdrawal. I was surprised it seemed to be your last choice.
@StrongMed
@StrongMed 4 года назад
There's nothing wrong with Librium, other than it can't be given IV. So as a hospitalist (internist who specializes in the care of hospitalized patients), it's not as commonly used because if a patient begins to withdraw so severely that they can't take in oral pills safely any more, one would need to switch from Librium to another benzo. There's formulas for making those conversations which are believed to be reasonably good, but are not perfect, so in my experience most hospitalists tend to start off with a med that has an IV form. If treating someone as an outpatient for withdrawal, anecdotally, I'd say Librium is the most common choice.

@@toby621 I can relate to that. For 1 Adivan doesn't hit as hard and fast as Librium, and it wears off way more quickly. The other after I was taken off of Adivan I had terrible cravings for either Adivan or Alcohol, for weeks and months after. Because of the anxiety. I didn't experience that with Librium, or to a much lesser extent at least. For that reason I found Adivan highly addictive and Librium not really addictive at all. Which is why I don't understand why doctors would still prescribe Adivan when it's a far inferior drug.
