How lovely to see my old home again. I recently returned after many years & was delighted with the enterprises going on. I was brought up on Alderney from 1948 to 57 & my parents lived & died there. They loved it. I feel privileged to have spent a really happy childhood in such a beautiful safe & healthy place Julia Lafene (Radice)
Hi Julia, I am really happy that you enjoyed seeing the island. I wonder how much it has changed haha. I will guess that it has only changed a little bit. Although from 1948 I suspect it has changed a lot for obvious reasons. I too feel privileged to have spent my childhood there, we share that feeling. Do you still know people on the island?
Nossa esta muito bonita a Ilha, Já tinha ouvido sobre Alderney mas nao tinha visto o quão é organizado por dentro gostei muito Bonito Mesmo! Abraço do Brasil.
Hi what a fantastic video a very enjoyable watch. I really enjoyed seeing the Island tour of Alderney. It does look a lovely island and thank you for making this video.
I have really enjoyed watching your Alderney films - they are excellent. I first sailed to Alderney in 1989. We were in the harbour when the Royal Yacht Britannia arrived and HM The Queen was brought ashore. The reception party greeted her and she was whisked away in a Maroon Mk 3 Ford Escort! No Rolls-Royce available on Alderney. It was a fantastic sight. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. Thank you so much.
I'm super happy to hear that you enjoyed the Alderney series. It was fun making videos in the place I grew up on and even learning new things about it myself. You first sailed to Alderney in the year of my birth which is also a fun fact, sounds like a great time to be there. I remember meeting her when she came when I was a kid, it must have been 2001.
Great video. Stopped by on the island for a few hours while on a sailing trip around the Channel Islands in September 2021. A bike is probably handy if you're limited by time but I think the best way to see the island is on foot if you can. Will have to get back there sometime
hey Joe! Hope you are well. I was supposed to leave Madeira today but when packing up yesterday afternoon realised my passport is lost. You will not believe the saga of trying to get an Emergency Travel Document! There is no longer a British Consulate in Funchal and Lisbon is the nearest office. Have had to stay on another 9 days to give enough time to sort things out. The expense is shocking. I can try to relax when I know I have that doc in place. Maybe you can do a video about this? Will be here until 8th June. I do stress about stuff and at least my partner is with me. Take care.
Oh man, that sounds awful. Have you managed to get it sorted? Amazing that there is no expedited service you could pull on. I often think it is bonkers we have such an important document which comes as a physical copy, surely it can be digitised. Do you have insurance for the trip? They usually cover things like this from a cost perspective. Hopefully you have been able to enjoy the time, even under these circumstances.
@@hungrytoexplore hi Joe, Apparently, lost U.K. passports within EU are dealt with/issued from Madrid. You apply online via Gov.U.K. Site. £100. Because there is no British embassy or consulate in Funchal you have to nominate the nearest one which is Lisbon. You can collect it from there by appointment. Or pay £10 to have it couriered to you. You should allow minimum 2 working days for application to be processed. In the event it took 1 day. But …. Then allow 6 working days for courier delivery. This gave me an estimate from DHL Express for 9th June! A day after due to fly back. In a panic I booked another flight for 10th June £41 wizzair FNC-LGW. My partner would go back on 8th and I would stay in another 2 nights. Thankfully, £41 not much to lose if flight not needed. The online application states that the ETD is valid up to 14 days from date of travel to take into account delays etc. But the printed confirmation of details submitted has a clause that states ETD is only valid for specific date and any changes for whatever reason means applying and paying for another ETD! I checked this with embassy in Lisbon and they confirmed the 14 day grace period is correct. It was introduced during covid. I stress easily and things like this just do not help. How can they call it an Emergency Travel Document if it takes almost 2 weeks to reach you? The latest tracking as of 3rd June was that it was at a facility in Madeira at 4pm. No weekend delivery. Managed to change delivery to 6th June (this was not possibly to do until item had arrived in Madeira). So, hopefully, I will get it tomorrow and can try to enjoy the last full day here on Tuesday. In this digital age why can’t they email the doc with QR code etc? Anyway, just want to get home and cut the grass.
@@hungrytoexplore insurance… my policy covers lost passport but maximum claim of £750. Suppose it is something but is probably a 1/3 of the costs incurred so far.
A fitting end to a great series Joe. These videos have given me an insight to a place that I knew nothing about. (Apart from its location by seeing it from the Cherbourg peninsula).
