Reduced to £19.99. Aldi Ferrex 40v cordless Angle grinder Too cheap to leave in the store. I have to say I was impressed with the cutting power, less so with other aspects
Don't stand any angle grinder up. You're begging to have an accident at some point. Even with the weight, the base to height ratio makes it very easy to fall. Get a hairline crack etc in your disc, fire it up without knowing and you'll know about it alright. Your bad habit is not a design flaw. Show me one angle grinder with a lead that can stand up and I might change my opinion. In the theme of safety and protecting the disc, the plastic piece you couldn't figure out... is likely to protect the disc when travelling etc.
I was going to post a tip about hotgluing a small piece to the front to help it stand up, but reading your comment has made me think again. Great point well made !!
I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read ru-vid.comUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.
Great unbox and initial review, be interesting to see how you get on with it 6 months down the road. Thanks for the quick lesson on cutting. Take care, Poo
I have definitely wasted many discs over my lifetime using the bull at a gate method of attack, I will now follow your example and with the savings I make on the discs I will buy one of these Ferrex jobies nice one Ian.
I've had one of these for a couple of years. It's had a decent amount of use and is still working fine. It bogs down very easily compared to a decent brand or a mains powered one but works fine for slitting steel and cutting tiles etc. Unfortunately it's the only one of the 3 tools I bought from Aldi that has survived. The circular saw and sander that both use the same batteries both died after less than a couple of hours' use. Bit annoying when you've invested in the battery platform but I still probably paid less for 2 batteries, a charger and grinder than I would have for the Milwaukee bare tool.
I have one and love it gifted my three mains powered angry tools to a local vehicle restoration charity. Also have the Ferrex cordless chainsaw which is brilliant Aldi Ferrex tools are generally much better than the Lidl equivalents.
I have the Milwaukee cordless grinder and it sounds as much like a bag of broken glass as the Ferrex. I think it's honestly brilliant having the rotating guard and tool storage in the handle since the first thing I do to my grinders is throw both of those things out. Wouldn't have to do it with the Ferrex. Quite awesome design. If you're still using this thing in six months don't tell Aldi or they'll send you an invoice for unpaid services. Sometimes being a cheap c**t pays off large and I think you've got a winner on your hands. Oh yeah Fireball Tool does an excellent video on grinder disc lifespan based on cut style. It is basically as you are saying in the video. His high speed video shows that when you do a head on cut to thin material it cuts much faster but you can see more of the disk chipping off. Probably has a lot to do with hand pressure as much as anything.
I have an Erbauer angle grinder that sounds similar. I think it's the soft start / rapid stop. Freaked me out a little at first since it was clunky as shit, because I hadn't used one with that feature before.
I bought one of these as a gift when the whole lot came together. I can't remember quite what I paid but it was probably about £50. Guy I bought it for has a lot of tools already but he says it is one of the best presents he has ever had. He finds it very handy for little jobs and those jobs where there is no power available. I have had occasion to use it myself and find it very useful.
Hi Ian I've got the exact same aldi 40v cordless grinder, the black ⚫ half circle is a guard what slides on the the adjustable part, you was nearly there when you was tinkering with it ,the handle has 3 holes lol 😆, its a great grinder ,it cut through that 8mm flat bar like butter 🧈, dud a great job on the fire extinguisher 🧯 aswell, very handy indeed 👍
I don't have one but thought it highly probable and glaringly obvious that was the purpose. I watched because I was curious about the ferrex brand. Seems very competitively priced, but I wonder about the quality and durability/longevity.
Very useful insight into what looks like a handy tool. I have a “fear” of angle grinders. Don’t know why. But I can see their value in slitting steel with ease. I need to overcome my fears. 👏👏👍😀 Andrew
every time i use any power tool that's not a drill, I have something screaming in the back of my head about how this thing could hurt me. its how I kept all my digits. i was taught to always be afraid of power tools that measures with horse powers. if you cant wrestle with a horse with just one arm, it will think less of you and try to have a go at you.
I done a very stupid thing years ago,44 years a mechanic, removed the guard to make the job quicker and easier, nearly lost all my fingers, never remove the guard.
Milwaukee makes a lot of cordless tools , grinder is one of the many I have , when I first purchased it I didn’t think I would use it much . But it does a ton of work , more than paid for itself 👍🇨🇦
Great review doing a great job and for the price my milwaukee one gets used every day and its great when your out and about and something is a bit to long you can cut it down there and then for the price of that it's working good 👍
I bought one 2 years ago, saw this one reduced to £9.99 so bought another, then the brushless version got reduced to 25 quid, went to get it, was sold out, pity as it looked very good. Brilliant for odd cutting jobs especially if away from mains.
the brushless is great £20 online, i have it in a Sealey Clamp for repeat and staright cutting tiles and metal, the rubber clamps on the Sealey fit better than when you try the 40v
I have a makita 18v cordless grinder but find it cuts out a lot once any pressure is applied, impresses with this one from Aldi. That fact the grinder don’t stand up is a small but silly design fault. The makita battery loads the opposite way so the battery weight stands it up. Enjoyed watching as always 👍
I think it is goid that it doesn't stand up. I see why others think differently but it is all to easy for people to put the tool down before the blade has stopped spinning if it stands up. Plus traditional, or mains powered not battery powered, that isn't ever an option in my experience. There is also a very good chance of it being knocked over. Those discs need looking after unless you want an exploding fragment embedded in you. Hence the plastic protector. Probably the exact opposite to a design flaw all things considered.
Have a bunch of Aldi Australia tools, they all still work and I'm confident they will keep going, some I've had for over 5 yrs, all the original batteries still seem to be holding a good charge, have some Ozito stuff, the batteries die even when charged early, bought a small property and purchased a set of Makita stuff, then bought some second hand older makita 18v stuff and was able to get adapters to use the new batteries, one of those older akita tools was a circular saw, it's brushed, but uses very little battery.
I've had a couple of these for a couple of years. They have been great for working on vehicles with limited access. Attach wire brush attachments and they're ideal for cleaning up rusty bits ready for repainting. I've just bought another two for the future when buying tools for little money becomes a thing of the past. For less than £100 I've got another 2 angle grinders, 2 drills and 2 impact drivers. Most of the tools in the 20V /40V FERREX range have been great......the lawn-mower's not up to much.
Hi same as you, tried first one against the Ryobis and Makita. Brilliant. now got 4 impact drivers, several drills and even the cheap SDS. ( only good for gutter downpipes etc) but for £ 35 against my Makita 24 V, hell of a lot cheaper. plenty of chargers about, But no batteries !
@@Professional_RU-vid_Commenter I bought them without chargers or batteries as I already have these. From Memory the impact driver and angle grinder were £15 a piece (£60) and the drills were £20 each. They were on sale.
Great video with great tips, would love to see the other discs and tips from tears of experience. That was meant to be years of experience but is probably both 😂😂😂
Now I'm kind of sad I did not get one, I have a 1100W 240V one that works great, but a small cordless one for that money seems like a pretty good and handy extra. About the fire extinguisher crucible, anything thinner than 1.5mm will probably not last long for aluminium (I use a 3mm thick one) but it will work fine for Pewter/Tin, Lead, Zinc, Bismuth, anything under 500C basically. You could always weld up a nice crucible of course 👍
I still have the Makita I got of you plus I have a big Parkside one I bought for £29.99 wasn't a bad buy bearings are going in it now but had it 3 year's. I use my mates Milwaki one it's not a bad one. You can't beet klingspor discs Ian there Dam good. You have given some very good tips about using a grinder Ian I guess a lot of practice lol.😂 I like them flap discs there Dam good. We will see it in 6 months or so it looks good.👍
The plastic bit slides on to the disc shield. So it can fully inclose the disc. As for the charger see if there is a bigger one online. I have the lidl version but I also have 2 chargers 1 is small and the other is bigger and has an internal fan and the charge rate is so much faster.
I bought 3 sanders (Orbital, Detail, and the one that looks like an iron) in Aldi about 2 years ago for €25 euro each which isn't bad. They sat in my house for about 6 months over winter unopened. Then one day I went in and there they were for €10 each. I brought them back (still had the receipt) and got the 3 for €30.
I have the Lidl line, got 9 different tools (you NEED a multitool in your life 👍) they are fine IMHO for a hobbyist but a but lacking in power compared to my DeWalt 🤔 but i use them daily no worries 👍 i like the variable speed settings mine has. Nice review 😎 I'd have taken the first one back as well 😁 👍
I purchased a Makita 240v model in the 1980s - it's still going strong and hasn't been well looked after! The Aldi one looks fine now, but perhaps give us a follow up in 6 months.. 😆
I'm with you on the instructions... never read then 🙄 I've the impact one and the drill from Lidl, they work great and have the chargers fixed to the wall in the shed to stop me walking on them...
They're now £14.99 + (£2.99 delivery online). managed to snag one a couple of weeks ago at Kirkham Aldi. Already got the brushless combi drill, batteries and charger. good tools, and compliment my Dewalt stuff perfectly
@@Man-in-da-shed £9.99 now. And Ian lad i have found a bargain right up your driveway....Aluminium patio table also Aldi price of 9.99, i have bought several for bodge projects. Get yourself to Aldick's online. Glass for another project.
Interesting review Ian. Mr RU-vid chucked this up on my timeline, so took a look! Aldi tools much better than Lidl, one good reason being you can buy things online that are no longer in store. I like the switch on the top, as being Left handed, your Makita switch would be underneath for me. I've decided not to buy any more Cordless tools. I've got most things Corded already, and if I (rarely) need to use them out & about, I've got a 5KVa Gennie at hand. Only have one cordless tool - a DeWalt drill that I bought over 20 years ago. The drill is as new, but it's now worn out its 2nd set of Batteries, and they're getting ever more expensive to replace.
I appreciate the view, I am as i explained a hobbyist scrapper and at times a cordless grinder is a boon out and about. must resist any nefarious thoughts though. i'm amazed at the views on this vid, as i know there are many professional youtube tool reviewers out there, hence why i tried to show this tool in use, as I would use it.
If the rattle is the gear clearance then It might not last long, but the extra grease is a good idea. A worthwhile product but I think I might look for a makita because I have the batteries and the charger already.
I think perhaps to get the rpm the gearbox is maybe a very large gear onto a small gear all grinders I have come across are noisy and rough! Seems ok,cordless tools are superb for remote working! Last year I dropped a Makita 18v drill into the river Thames I dried it out and was shocked that both the drill and the battery were fine and still working.
I landed on milwakee, about 3 years ago I found a 4amp milwakee battery, it was used but still had a charge, so I bought a Grinder, battery only and a charger, now, I have the grease gun, and a drill
I notice it also has a handle position on the top, unusual probably a very nice feature as a steady for cutting sheet. But I wonder if the bottom of the handle interferes with the switch in that position. Perhaps you could give that a go
Cracking review of a decent tool for the money. it would be interesting to see how long that battery lasts under load. My Dewalt battery grinder is dire!
To be honest I have a ferrex car tyre inflator it's the shape of a drill and it's brilliant. It only cost £15 and it has payed for its self. Still going strong 3 years on. The rotating guard was a nice feature on the grinder.
When switched on does it take time to get going flat out or is it a slow start? The when you stress it does it then again slowly get going? That's what mine does but it's the original one about 3 years old
Great video. This cordless drill would be great for chopping ulez cameras down. It took you 38 secoconds to chop through that with the cordless, it would take about 20 seconds to cut a ulez pole down with that cordless
Without reading other comments, that black plastic could be a disc protector for transport/storage. If like me you use a lot of the 1mm cutting discs they can be very fragile, a little knock or chip, and next time you start it up, slivers of disc flying everywhere. I really like the quickly adjustable guard, that alone is almost enough to sell it to me
The horrible rattle is the nature of a brushless motor due to it's high pole count and strong magnets causing a lot of "cogging". My cordless kielder grinder sounds the same, i had the same thoughts as you and checked the bevel gearbox for grease but all was well in there.
Except it's clearly not brushless. It would be mentioned on the box. And the disc spins easily and smooth with one finger. Brushless motors are harder to turn with just one finger. Most of the noise comes from very rough powdered metal gears, too much gear to gear distance and bearings that have too much play. It's just the nature of minimal cost manufacturing. All things said, it's still usable tool for diy use.
Ferrex stuff is alright - starts getting spendy if you have to buy the entire set-up. Use grinders all day every day - have the usual "Posh" ones - Makita, Dewalt, blah blah - the one anomaly I have found in "cheap grinders" are the B&Q McAllister ones. All the other cheap (and many dear) ones die fast in our workshop as they have to run for hours, not minutes - but the Mcallisters refuse to die. Which is nuts as they are cheap as chips. They are rapidly becoming our "Buy a small grinder" grinder as they just work great, for absolute ages. :-) But yeah - the Ferrex ones are alright. Not the worst by a long mile.
@@Man-in-da-shed great video Ian. Ordered one today but if you order the three items as one purchase (grinder, battery , charger) £74.97. Order grinder separately to battery and charger £64.97 . Buyer be ware lol. What’s the best disco for value do you think ? Keep up the good work. Stephen
@@Man-in-da-shed on another subject Ian. Several months ago on your channel you did a bit about the “does and don’ts” about scrapping which I found very interesting but am unable to find it again. As like you I’m a hobby scrapper and feel very intimidated in looking in other peoples skips etc what is the legal position in doing so ? I go on the rule of thumb as if it’s on the pavement or road it’s fair game and would not look in skips if on peoples driveways for fear of trespassing.
They are a fantastic little tool for the money, and the batteries seem to last longer than my DeWalt grinder. My only gripe is that the cooking fan on the motor seems to blow air down through the body of the tool into the battery, after some brick cutting, I noticed that the battery indicator lights were really dim, and that the top of the battery was covered in brick dust, when I opened up the battery, it was clear that brick dust had blown down through the contacts and the inside of the battery was full of brick dust, horrible stuff! I had to replace the plastic in front of the indicator lights, as it was sticky, and the dust wouldn't come off. The grinder had been used with a plastic bag over the battery to protect it . I had two batteries effected , might be worth keeping one just for use on the grinder? All in all fantastic value,!
Went in to Aldi (Hawick) today looking for one, found them and saw the price was £11.99! Grabbed one and went to the till, the guy put it through and it came up as £19.99, I pointed out that the display price was £11.99 so he went to check. He came back and said the display price was wrong, but would honour the display price.....Result!! So, got one for £11.99, and he quickly removed the wrong display price sticker, to stop future discounted purchases.
Seen one at Aldi for for £9.99 Three bays up they were £29.99 I asked what the staff what the difference was? There wasn't any. I asked them to scan the price to see if it was correct. They scanned the £29.99 it came up as £29.99 then they scanned the £9.99 one and it came up as £9.99 🙃 so I bought it.😃
I gave in in the end and bought the 40V Angle grinder when it came back on offer last week. £19.99. As usual they had the battery chargers at £15 but no batteries in-store Ordered a battery from aldi website and picked up a 20v impact driver for £10 while I was there. Both pretty decent. Not massively impressed with the screw in handle on the grinder... very cheap and not very nice-feel but more than enough power and the impact driver is very impressive for a "lesser" brand too. Little bit of research shows that the motors in these things are made by WALTHER and Ferrex is a brand from Positec who also make WORX and Erbauer tools. I think i'll grab a couple more batteries if they ever come on offer
The Aldi website was selling the battery and grinder for £36 making the grinder a tenner. Big Clive. Com took a grinder apart on a vid, think he’s done another since on the motor and battery
I keep 'nearly' buying this and the impact wrench, but they come bare, without the battery and I can never see the batteries for sale... where do you buy the batteries?
If your lucky they are in store. Otherwise I buy them from Aldi online , the impact wrench and battery are on sale for £24 online, tip. Put results of search in Lowest price first
I've seen a lot of people get hurt by these tools.... They always use them backwards... You want to sparks actually flying at you... Only use the disk from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock position. You have much more control over these machines This way. In the proper configuration if the tool grabs it will fly away from you. If you use it backwards it will kick back and go right into your gut or your forearm or your knuckle. Now there's always that 1 situation where you have to use it wrong just because... But these tools are very very dangerous... Not to mention if you get something in your eye.
One of the greatest aids for a burglar, cuts through locks in a Jiffy. I’m not a burglar , but I new someone that had his yard hit 3 times and the Locks were cut off
can i believe u too it back to save a tenner yes i can 😂great video ian i had thought about getting one of those but i was put off by not having a charger or battery
To offset the cost of the batteries (4 now) and charger over the years I also bought their cordless chainsaw, three cordless grinders, a detail saw, cordless nail gun, and cordless impact drill. I used to buy expensive brand tools (still use my Makita cordless drill) but find it cheaper to buy cheap tools from Aldi (and Lidl) then replace if they fail - which none have done so far even under heavy use. Oh, I have three grinders because changing discs while on a job is just too laborious :)
Corded power tools are always the safest bet, as somewhere along the way you’ll never be able to get all these interchangeable battery’s as they would have moved on to yet another variant.
I drive my husband nuts when I go to Lidl or Aldi, I always buy more tools from the middle isles than I can fit in my workshop and make what should be a cheap shop a pretty expensive one lol!! £29.99 is a great price but I hate having to buy the separate batteries but at least they work across the tools like you say!........... I knew you were going to say you reduced it for the £10🤣🤣 oh well you can put that towards the second much needed battery!
Mine lasted a week, didn’t take the receipt 😢 so can’t take it back. Would have been cheaper going for titan that have a battery and charger or Stanley as I have two drills already. Batteries are hard to get, took 4 weeks to get one. I now have a fully functioning battery, charger and a decent paper weight. Once bitten.
Not a great fan of review videos but it's Ian! I think you will find that the plastic part clips on to the metal guard to cover the other side of the disc.
Bought a 20v drill from Lidl got I'll couldn't use it so tried it after two months it failed totally so having lost receipt went back thought that's it told phone head office phoned sid how it was bought with card they in turn gave me another number phoned it they asked for a numbers off of drill thought shant hear any more inside of ten days new drill appeared by courier it works fine a bloke used it to build my summer house for me lot of work still works
