Another in my series of Aldo Protti uploads, this from the famous 1961 production of Andrea Chenier production with Del Monaco as Chenier and Tebaldi as Maddalena. This excerpt shows the effortlessness with which Protti sang through the passaggio and the clarity of his voice throughout his entire range---never muddy, never overdark, always true to the instrument and always focused.

This is FANTASTIC singing. No thickness, no distorted vowels, totally chiaroscuro, "covered" in the right places. NO ONE is singing like this now. Not by a LONG shot.

Una voce chiara, limpida, riconoscibile, forte e misurata. Mi sembra di aver sentito diverse volte questo baritono a Cagliari, dove era solito venire.

Protti was a great interpreter. He knew how to thrust the voice out to the audience. Something that is greatly missing today. Notice how he opens up many of his vowels. He achieves great ring and anchors the voice in the chest. This is exciting singing. A real Baritono Verdiano and Verissmo.

One of my favorite singers. It's a pity that to much attention is payd to one singers(Pavarotti, Caballe, Domingo) ad such a Masters like Protti, Hines.. are practically unknown

Quei bastardi estremisti di sinistra hanno piu volte distrutto la targa che commemora Aldo Protti a Cremona, Aldo Protti ha interpretato 425 volte Rigoletto e vanta ben 380 recite al prestigioso Viener Staatsoper.

Enfin, musicalement, à lexception du dernier "a" de "amor", la voix soliste et l'orchestre sont parfaitement synchrones (qualité relativement rare, dans du "vérisme", aux expansions, allargando, ritenuto et/ou ritardando aléatoires). Magnifique ! Un exemple à suivre !

Questa si chiama tecnica italiana. Quella vera che permetteva ai cantanti di cantare per anni e anni senza dannegiare l'organo vocale. Cero occorrevano anni di studio ad un alievo prima di essere pronto ma poi si poteva considerare un vero professionista.

Never a star but the best of the second tier baritones. He has a really well produced and focused voice. His problem may have been he stature. He looks to be only about 5'2" in many of his RU-vid videos. I like him so much better than Juan Pons, Thomas Hampson, or Carlo Guelfi. Most of the time I have little patience for those who over praise past singers. But not this time.

@bodiloto Mon cher Nicola,tu sais que je ne suis plus un enfant et que j'arrive encore à entendre correctement. Je trouve le timbre de Bellantoni somptueux,ainsi que sa ligne de chant,dans un enregistrement de 1910! Il m'est difficile de ne pas entendre les qualités ou les défauts dans une prise de son de 1961!Tu sais pourtant que mes oreilles ne peuvent me trahir à ce point... Je t'embrasse,mon grand et très cher ami. Mitia.

I don't think that it's a question of living in the past. We have to admit that the singers of today can not compare in point of view of vocal production with the ones of the past. There are not a lot of true maestri of singing and we can hear the results when we campare the glorious singing past and the present.

Ici, ce n'est peut-être pas forcément la voix du siècle, quoique le timbre est fort beau. Nonobstant ce qui précède, il convient néanmoins de relever la remarquable maîtrise technique de l'émission vocale, ainsi que celle de la gestion optimale du souffle (le fameux "appoggio"), le tout allié à une qualité de diction et de prononciation italienne absolument exemplaire.

I'm surprised he didn't modulate his voice more for this. But ,perhaps the theatre's acoustics gave him difficulties in sensing his volume. I've heard singers who performed in the old Met make that complaint. Both his Otello recordings for Decca were fully nuanced and always made more of an impression on me than Toto Gobbi. His approach was more aggressive but still gave pleasure.

Ici, les i sont vraiment des i, les ou ressemblent à de vrais ou (et non des ô, voire carrément des o ouverts, comme cest trop souvent le cas chez certains interprètes... et non des moindres), en sus de toutes les consonnes & double consonnes, égrenées avec brio, pour la joie de lauditeur, lequel peut enfin comprendre le texte issu de sa propre langue, sans devoir implicitement recourir, pour autant, à déventuels subterfuges annexes, destinés à asseoir la compréhension du texte.

Demasiada intensidad constante, no hay contrastes, la voz luce excelente, pero la interpretación no es artísticamente la mejor. El personaje interpretado con este canto intenso, parece neurótico y desquiciado. Carece de momentos reposado de reflexión y añoranza o arrepentimiento. Cómo ejercicio vocal está muy bien.

Et en même temps, un lien vers l'enregistrement dont tu parles ? Autre question : Lorsqu'un soulève la voix, cela se manifeste dans quelle(s) partie(s) du corps?

@bodiloto Si je te parle de Bellantoni précisément,c'est qu'ils sont aux antipodes l'un de l'autre dans la façon de chanter.Le premier est élégant,souple,rond,il soulève la voix.Le second est plat,pousse la voix devant,et n'a aucune noblesse, ni dans le timbre,ni dans la manière de s'en servir.Tout ce que je n'aime pas,et tu m'obliges à le réécouter pour te fournir un argument construit,c'est dur!!! Loin de moi l'envie de te décevoir,mon grand frère,cependant je me dois d'être honnête. Mitia

Although I like the balance in his voice, he seems to be forte the whole way through. This song is a big, fantastic song, but it needs it's dynamic contrast. Otherwise it seems like you're blasting.

Voce stupenda ed emissione impeccabile, ma se posso permettermi interpretazione monotona, tutta fortissimo, per me ci vorrebbe molta più varietà per dare rilievo psicologico al personaggio (Cappuccilli docet).

Hello zs1968. Don't you think that the fact that my rather innocent comment is marked with too many negative votes, sort of proves my point. For me singing is not a contest anyway, Personally I listen a lot to past singers, but it is real easy to overrate them because of a general tendency of people to glorify the past. Ask any old geezer and you'll know what I mean.
