Protti era un immenso baritono, assoluto in tutti i registri e con acuti poderosi. Penso che fosse uno dei migliori del suo tempo. L'ho ascoltato dal vivo, negli anni Settanta, e conservava la sua accattivante voce.

Il più grande Tonio del suo tempo e anche del mio, perchè oltre la voce e tecnica perfetta in scena veniva fuori il personaggio. E si, che ero o sono una grandissima ammiratrice di Bastianini e anche di Taddei. A ciascuno il suo, questo è il bello della lirica.
My goodness!! I've heard most of the great baritone singers of the last 75 years, and there are bigger voices...but, I have never heard anyone sing this as NATURALLY as Protti. It is exactly as if he is having a speaking conversation with the audience. So grateful to the poster, rexeterna, for this video. What a treasure!

@31122051 C'è un aneddtoto davvero divertente su Protti e Taddei... erano amici per chi non lo sapesse... e una volta cantarono nella stessa stagione a Venezia, uno Rigoletto l'altro Barbiere... andarono a sentire l'uno la recita dell'altro e si scambiarono complimenti reciproci e battutine scherzose... Quando si è GRANDI, l'arte e la musica vanno al di là di tutto! Non ho mai sentito parlar male di Protti da nessuno dei suoi colleghi come lui non parlava male di nessuno e rispettava tutti!
Bodiloto, ma io la vedo sotto ogni video di opera quasi, dice che ha vissuto anche il periodo tra il '50 e passa della lirica e si firma come Nicola. Ma lei non è mica il tenore Nicola Tagger per caso?
Truly outstanding. I heard him many, many years ago in Vienna where he sang quite often and his potrayal of Rigoletto, Othello and Pagliacci are still with me.

Prima di Protti, Apollo Granforte, un Grande Baritono , come ora a volte dimenticato, ha saputo essere almeno alla pari nell'interpretazione artistica "recitativa e vocale" di quest'opera. Consiglio agli amici un approccio comparativo dei Due, senza fare classifiche, ma per onorare e godere l'arte e saper percepire i riflessi mutanti della stessa. Sofismi a parte, indubbiamente i due Grandi, fra i Giganti Padri quali Ruffo, Amato, Franci, De Luca, Sammarco, Galeffi, Stabile, Stracciari, Viglione Borghese, Formichi and Ancona, che hanno "creato" con la loro interpretazione i caratteri dei protagonisti delle opere dell'Autore. Grandi Artisti dell'Opera questi a cui la Musa lirica si aggrappa per sopravvivere e speriamo... per generarne altri simili con anima, cuore, e voce e voce e voce da appoggiare sul fiato, galleggiare sopra questo come un sughero sull'acqua e risuonare dove l'arte ha insegnato.
Giusta la "lista" di grandi baritoni da lei menzionata. Personalmente ritengo Granforte il migliore. Giusto confronto, non per paragoni ma per arricchire il nostro patrimonio artistico e la nostra vecchia scuola melodrammatica.

I always used to confuse Aldo Protti with Afro Poli. Both were Italian baritones with Poli being about a half generation earlier. I liked Poli better. Afro Poli later on played in movies where Protti would dub the singing. I couldn't understand this at all. Then I saw this video. Protti was nearly a midget. He looks to be only about five feet tall. Too short for most conventional roles on stage on in films but appropriate for a clown.
@stevevandien I agree with you, but why are you comparing Protti with Warren, Merrill and MacNeil? He should be compared with Gobbi (whom you mentioned here), Taddei and Bastianini. Protti's voice was not as grand as Taddei's or Bastianini's. His vocal coloring was not as great as Gobbi's or Taddei's. However, those three Italians were special. Protti had a good voice and very solid technique. Theatrically, in this production, Protti actually back-flipped on stage. A great theatrical effect!!
Try to listen to milnes, McNeil, Bastianini, Granforte, Lawrence Tibbet, Stoyan Popov... Gobbi was good, but not the best. Shurely he was a giant of acting, though.

GOBBI es el mas grande... la mejor tesitura. mcneil 8/10... milnes 7.5/10... no son buenos como estos dioses GOBBI tiene mas de 500 rigolettos, 800 scarpias,etc es el baritono que MAS SUBIO AL ESCENARIO INSUPERABLE. y cantando casi igual el 90% de las veces, olvidate es un superdios.
Une voix sans art,un bas-médium sec et terne,de gros applats sans finesse.La projection au détriment de la beauté du chant.Décidément,je n'aime vraiment pas!
