Man, I wish Lanterne had rights to make these longer.. so much was happening today, there was no chance to put everything into 8 minutes. I enjoy the podcast very much, but these with video footage are next level. The thing is that Lanterne has another view of what happened, since him and Benji tend to miss or forget some of the (important) details at times and Lanterne can see them here again.. And the podcast is right after the race, where they have no time to settle in what just happened. Anyways, keep up with good work, been enjoying both this channel and the podcast and it looks like Vuelta is just heating up!

Ive ridden about 20-30 hours with Valverde and his skills are right up there. Seen him taking his jacket off down gorge road at 75kph no hands. He grabbed way too much lever with his right hand. It was panic stations. No way he would have crashed on rim brake. Look how much his front wheel washed out. He has done probably 800000km on rim brakes and used to them. Then at his old age he has to re learn...not going to happen and this crash is proof. He crashed like a neo pro vs the mutant rider he is. You dont get to Valverde's level if you cant descend like a ghost. Disc brakes take out another rider from wheel lock. WTF are they doing on road bikes...this isnt Leadville!
@LanterneRougeCycling
@LanterneRougeCycling 3 года назад
Agree was a super weird crash, front wheel had a lot of wobble. He hadn't crashed out of a stage race in 1500 days (last big crash was wet TT pushing that corner in the TDF), his skills in bunch and descending are top notch. If you remember from Movistar doco last year the riders were not happy at all with the switch over from rim brake initially

I don't think he was going to win because he usually fades in the 3rd week longer mountain stage but I have such high regard for him as an incredibly hard man in the sport. Valverde crash analysis: yes, that hole or road problem should have been fixed prior to the race due to its location. Yes, hands on hoods contributed. No, he did not bail in time but was hammered to the ground. Typically a rider who bails doesn’t break the collarbone. What was missed? His head bounced very, very hard! Watch the replays. Wow. He likely has a concussion and the collarbone is the least of his worries. They let him back on the bike. Not good. Anyone who hits his head like that should be removed from the race and undergo concussion protocols administered by race officials, not the team.

Disc brake at fault here. Period. No way a rider like Valverde who has been competing for 30 years crashes like that. His left hand is on the hood and he's pressing the brake lever as you can see. With rim brakes, not 100% sure though, he wouldn't have crashed the way he did. Not the first time Valverde complains on how bad disc brakes reacts in certain situations.
