Old Friend No. 8 - Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine has left home.
I bought this drum machine back in the late '80s. Never did a lot with it. Programming is easy once you get the hang of it.
The pads are hard, but have touch sensitivity. Some have yellowed more than others with age!
The outputs are OK on this video. I seem to recall having problems with one channel of the primary stereo outs (it has two pairs), associated with a poor connection in one of the ICs.
A sign of its age is that its internal memory may be backed-up onto cassette tape as well as MIDI. There are two mono 3.5mm jack sockets on the back panel for connection to a cheapo portable cassette recorder - devices that were common in the early days of domestic personal computing.
I have no idea how the internal memory is retained - if there is a rechargeable battery inside, I have no doubt that it will have expired by now.
The device is complete with its original 'wall wart' external power supply, retail packaging and instruction manual. For instant reference, a condensed set of instructions also appear in a flap-up lid on the top of the machine - neat idea. You will note from the video that I have not used this machine for several years!

I must add that my longtime appreciation for Godflesh compelled me to get both the HR-16 & HR-16B. The coolest thing about these boxes is how easy it is to add your own drum sounds via burning EPROMS.

I used one of these throughout the late 80's and 90's, marvelous piece of kit especially hooked up to the MMT8 sequencer. Programmed all my backing tracks in real time and all the sounds were sampled, totally programmable and capable of volume sensitivity. I was often complimented on the "real drum sound" it created. Still got it in the loft somewhere, great bit of kit.

Never had my own drum machine (since I frankly prefer triggering the sounds Live to sequencing them), but I was tempted by this when I heard home demos by my old friend who put his to awesome use.

Great video ! I still have this drums machine Alesis HR 16... It always reminds me of the beautiful early days of electronic music... I'm glad that there are still musicians who are excited about old instruments... vintage... All the best to you !!!

Oh my days!! How could I have forgotten this little baby? I had one from about 89 onwards. Even after I bought my first Akai S1000 I would still use the HR-16 for little rhythmic touches. I loved the fact that you could tune each instrument, and it was 16 note polyphonic......and it was cheap(ish)!! Thanks for the memories 👍😀😀

I own it right now. Very easy programming and song editing. The first with very long pattern capacity (i remember like 64 beats or more). The erase on the fly feature is top notch!

I've seen the name of this machine passing by alot, never took notice until I was looking for a specific Alesis firmware chip. That's where I found out there's a ton of soundsets available for this machine. Even TR808, Oberheim DMX, Linndrum and D-Station chipsets are plenty for sale so my GAS was triggered and starting searching for intel on this old thing and got reminded that I have a SR16 stashed away somewhere which require a much needed maintainance. Anyway, looking at this vid it really looks like a machine that hardly needs space and works as easy as it looks. The sequencing looks pretty good, perhaps I'd dare to mod the thing and add a different pad-section for better response when batting the drums. But first I need to get my hands on a pretty working one ;-) Alesis for the win!

Coming back to this video, I just realized the main sample in Injury Reserves' "Jawbreaker" is the cowbell from this machine. Love that sound! Really cool to find where it came from by accident

I still have one of these in the closet somewhere that I got from a pawn shop YEARS ago. It's interesting now how all of the newer versions of similar hardware since then have re-designed and stacked the 16 pads in rows of four. The sequencer in this machine wasn't bad at all either. I remember the sounds in it were nice, but all of the pads on mine were terribly stiff and not touch sensitive. If I had the patience to look for it, I would dig it up and try to run it midi thru my current gear and play the sounds thru my keyboard and play around with it but I have too much other production work ahead of me right now LOL! Thanks for sharing this though. It took me back.

I’ve never had my own drum machine over 26 years of playing music. Was never that big on sequencing drums, preferring to play them or trigger them myself. This is definitely a model that tempted me though.

I still use mine and love it, the only bad sample was the finger snap, completely weak and a single snap, you have to layer three or four at different pitches and delays to get a decent snap

Too late for me to help with videos, Ken - this old friend left home via eBay a few months ago. But it did have two sets of stereo outs. Everything bought at that time looks expensive in the modern era - cost me about £300 new, I think, and went for very little! Not sure what you mean by clicking pad sounds, Rahul. This was recorded live with a mix of the sound in the room and the electronic output from the machine, so you're bound to hear me hitting the pads - they were hard plastic things!

It depends. It is old, but it still fetches at least $200 on eBay because of its reputation. It's a very good sounding, very usable drum machine; all of the Alesis drum boxes are. Even the hardware sequencer counterpart, the MMT-8, is totally usable, even today.
@ceomclean
@ceomclean 10 лет назад
Wow... I used to use this back in the early 90's along with the MMT8 sequencer. It always had a really good sound. I might still have it somewhere. Stopped using it after I got the SR16 which was a major step up but now is outdated as well. Nice seeing this one in action again.

Hope you are enjoying your HR-16 by now. On the subject of the clicking, this video was more about seeing the unit being operated. I'm sure most people will be able to pull down captured files of the HR-16's samples from somewhere on the Internet if they need to hear their actual quality.

got one of these first week of jan1988 ... used it on lots of stuff . Also had the Alesis mm8 8 chan sequencer as well ... and a midiverb 1 ... always liked the room sounds on the midiverb 1 ... the low numbers were great - 3 and 4 , number 9 and number 11 - 14 up to 24 were good i think ( we were gonna rule the world with the right number choices ) ...I still think of them fondly when I am in small yet ambient ( empty ? ) spaces . I often think to myself ... 'mmm ' ... 11' ish ... The huge cavanous number 40's and 50's menu ones were unusable unless you were in Clannad or simulating deep mine chat. The level of sustain sort of restricted you to 1 note per 8 bars or so... Its not good I know , but better than remembering shit episodes of Cannon or Ironside in detail anyway. + How much is a mind rinse ?

FarewellOldFriends My favorite (and very famous) oud player (his name is 'Coskun Sabah') has been using a rhytm-box on stage (live performance) as one-man-band since early 90s. I was gonna get one but, do you actually need to press the buttons all extra hard? lol the guy in the video appeares bored or like a musician with musician's block struggling to come up with a beat at times hahaha. Do these have floppy discs connectors or do they have batery backup
@FarewellOldFriends
@FarewellOldFriends 3 года назад
Just a note from the 'LOL bored guy': I mention in the video description (remember them?) that the memory content can be backed up onto cassette tape or via MIDI, and that it is retained through power cycles by some form of internal battery backup. Touch sensitivity of the keys is not particularly subtle. The manual is available on-line from various sources (although no longer from Alesis directly), should you wish to delve deeper into this unit's capabilities.

Hi Gonzalo - I sold my HR-16 a few years ago, so only have the Alesis HR-16/MMT8/HR-16B instruction Manual for reference (if you don't have a copy, it's available online if you search for it). It is not very clear, but using the MIX menu (p.17), the volume of individual voices can be reduced to zero. To make this work, you may have to go into the MIDI/UTIL menu (p.18) and set Option 12 - MANUAL VOICE TUNE/MIX (p.22) to ON (it is OFF by default) There may be an easier way to do this, but I can not test it, sorry!

No, it only has a set of permanent mask-programmed ROM samples on-board. Like all machines of this type, it's very much what-you-hear-is-what-you-get. Alesis made a second, almost identical machine (the HR16B) with an alternative set of sounds. Good marketing ploy!

@FarewellOldFriends
@FarewellOldFriends 9 лет назад
+alwerks1 I would think so - as far as I can see they are physically identical units, just with different voice data in their sample memory. Some PSU suppliers show a mini jack plug, which could possibly have been appropriate for early HR-16 revisions, but my HR-16 had a barrel-style connector, and I believe the HR-16B had also. Remember it requires 9V a.c.!
