imagine being filmed for two hours straight while this dude passionately explains how easy it is to midi map a multi pattern data dump in preset mode and trying to act like you understood everything what a champ

I've had this drum machine sitting around for about 8 years now and have never really learned how to use it. Somebody traded it to me for some work and I didn't really have a need at the time. I have since decided that it is easier to learn to program my own drums than to consistently get my drummer over to record. This 2 part video has been great! I can now program songs, sounds, patterns, and fills to my liking...without having to wait on a drummer! Thank you for being so thorough in your presentation. Great video!!

We recorded so much great music with this back in the 90s! I sold my original unit in 1997. Recently acquired a second-hand one for $50AUD. It's like coming home.. Stoked!

To record audio from your SR-16 to your computer, you need to connect the SR-16's 1/4" analog outputs to the analog inputs on your computer. A USB to MIDI cable will transmit MIDI note data only. MIDI is like printed notes on a page. It does not contain or transmit sound. To record the sound of your SR-16, could use the 1/8" analog audio input on your computer or purchase a USB Audio interface like the Alesis IO2 Express. I hope that this helps!

It’s great that this guy did this tutorial and someone has uploaded it to RU-vid. But, the manual is very easy to follow for quick reference. If you want more detail, then watch the video. But if your just wanting to do something basic, the manual is a quicker reference.

OK granted... it's a little bit complicated. But hey, at least it doesn't hit on your ol' lady every time you step out of the studio! And better yet... It only speeds up when you tell it to!

Women are more complicated than the sr16. And more expensive. Plus the sr16 can be extremely satisfying if you catch my drift nudge nudge wink wink.

My Zoom RT-124 broke through years of use. The guy at the music shop suggested this as a replacement...I bought it. What the heck,..this is so difficult to programme. The Zoom was an absolute breeze to programme...This video kinda proves how convoluted and tricky this Alesis machine is. I shouldn't have listened to that music shop salesman. The Zoom sort of mended itself...so I carried on using it. I've struggled many times to get my head round the SR-16...but alas no...I just can't. I now just play the drums manually to a click track from my Yamaha keyboard. It's much quicker, easier and actually, they sound better. I hope that Alesis have learned over the years and that the newer and up-graded version of this machine is easier to programme.

Zoom is easier but Alesis sounds better and programming is in a way always the same. Make patterns and put them in order. The sr16 is just a little more menu flashing. Once you know the paths to set volumes panning tuning pads etc it's easy. I really like the sr16 for the sound quality of the samples. Had the zoom rt123 and wish I recorded all that with the sr16. It's more versatile.

@@svenjansen2134: Perhaps you should do a tutorial, using an actual song such as Pretty Woman or something with a rather easy beat. There must be many more, including myself, who need a lot more information just to produce a simple song.

I'd really like to see a demonstration of the tape backup. I tried it a few times and every time was a failure. I imagine using a computer as a backup would be even better.

@ctguy1955 You probably got rid of it already but you can midi out to computer and have something like Battery play the samples. That's my setup now. I find drum machines much easier to program than doing beats on the computer.

You mentioned that, "I cant figure out how to do anything to get a drum sound from youtube to be now on my sr16. I have a usb to midi." Are you trying to load a new drum sound onto your SR-16? If so, this cannot be done. The sounds on the SR-16 are fixed, and cannot be updated or changed.

I am trying to figure out how to separate the kick and snare from the rest of the kit. This blurry video showing button pushing does nothing. As for the instruction manual, it says...To change the output assignment: 1. Press the pad. Well,,,what pad??????? If fact, how do you even get to the main output screen???

Set pad output kick and snare to AUX output and pan them left and right. Use the aux outputs for isolated kick and snare to mix console and use main outputs for the rest. You need at least a 4 channel mixer. It's in the manual as example and for me the main reason to buy the sr16. It sounds awesome if you mix it out like that. Almost pro.

Page 33-34 in the manual: CHOOSE OUTPUT JACKS. When I read that paragraph I took one more look at the price and immediately bought it.

Actually, the MIDI out does only send just data, all you have to do is turn on MIDI out. If you mean how to assign note numbers, I can get back to you on that. I've done that too...

actually you can you just need a daw or a digital audio workstation on your computer. i use reason and i use the sr-16 with a single midi cable going into the midi of my m audio keyboard, and into my laptop via usb interface. but ive got a $5 midi to usb adapter and used it for the same purposes with reason. more simply put you need a program, it wont just make sounds. ive heard there are free programs that will work but idk them because i use reason by propellerhead

If you want to do a verse chorus and a middle part I know banks a and b can be verse and chorus Where do you program the middle part ? What bank?

Next pattern. Or a fill but they're tricky. Just make a new pattern. Or change pattern length.

as someone who uses this machine for live gigs only using just the presets , how do I just store the chosen pattern and tempo to speed thinks up on stage

It would help to have the time where you can find the major parts. I cant figure out how to do anything to get a drum sound from youtube to be now on my sr16. I have a usb to midi cable but cant figure out how to do it. Neither this or the manual cant help me.

So there is no way to take an audio sound from a pc and install it on the sr16 ? Well thank you for letting me know this, so now its just a paper weight I paid 70 bucks for. The audio sound I mentioned was of drums, by the way.

I dont get one thing. Presets have A and B pattern options. Can I create the same setup through record setup? Or it has to be only through step mode?

A & B pattern presets are just slight variations. Create a basic pattern, copy it, then modify the copy. Call one A and the other B and you've accomplished the same thing. .

Should be possible with MIDI knowledge which I don't have. But it should be possible the sr16 is midi.

You have to be a scientist to use the Sr -16 " wayyyyy to many step Edits just to make a beat . The Manual is just as confusing as Reading the Dead Sea Scrolls. Currently iam using my SR-16 as a door stopper. #🗑
