It's a problem with a lot of RU-vid "tutorials". They show you that what, but omit half the how and all of the why. A good teacher on here is a rare thing.

Well to be fair back when this was uploaded all audio was 128kbps at most But yeah i've yet to hear good sounds from it too. I do own the XR20 though, which is the same device but with 650 hiphop related samples and it's the exact same thing under the hood and it sounds good. Not like amaaaaaazing, but definitly good. It really shines with a nice EQ+Compressor like SoftHype (which is built in) IMO. So I assume these Alesis machines can sound just fine as well as long as they bothered to put decent samples in there. Personally I do like some of the samples in the XR20, so I'd pay a little extra to get that one. You can make some funky stuff with it. I don't like to self-advertize, but there's a video on my channel where you can hear the sound going straight in to a Line-In port of my PC. (It also has lights under all the pads, so you can jam a lot easier at night, it looks very 'DJ-ish' but it's pretty helpful IMO)

I ended up buying one of these. I haven't used it much, so far, but it sounds ok. I bought it to replace a really old and worn out yamaha ry30. The old yamaha had better touch pads and sound modifiers, but it also cost about 10 times more. I'm happy enough with this SR18. It does the job on the cheap. It really could use better pads though - they go from really light touch to really hard hit without much dynamics between the two.
