This is the 3rd of my "How to" videos on the Alesis SR18 drum machine. This video shows how to piece together your custom patterns in order to make an entire song. The SR18 has 99 song memory slots and 99 User patterns slots, which doubles up to 198 patterns, as each pattern has 2 x A & B options and each A & B pattern has it's own "Fill" slot

I was considering buying an SR-18 but was concerned based on some reviews on how difficult to understand the processes are, but it honestly reminds me of my old, old, old Casio RZ-1 drum machine (yes, I'm that old). Hi. Cool video. You obviously have a deep understanding of electronic music. Can you create odd time time signatures on the Alesis like 9/4 and 9/8 - i am interested in adding a drum machine to my pedal board for bass composition but want something that is not just bog standard 4/4 and 3/4 and that can facilitate a pedal chain into the machine and an output to my bass amp. The Alesis SR 18 will be what i need as the SR16 will not facilitate the audio in. I appreciate i would also need the footswitches to change parts as would not want to use hands whilst playing bass

@@TheOldBaz Ok, The custom drum pattern I use, started from preset drum kit "Rock 14 DRM067". Then in User mode I customized it by pressing "Drumset" then using arrow buttons on right to scroll through menu and change volume, choose type of kick,snare,tomes etc etc using the value wheel, then adjust the individual levels of each drum sound i.e.kick/snare etc, then adjusting attack, delay, release & filter. Then name & saved this custom kit and used the same kit when playing live. The reason why is because as a band we wanted our drums to sound like actual live drum kit, to be used on every song. So we built the sound we liked and built the kit that gave us the sound we wanted. I hope this helps?

you seem very helpful, maybe you can help me.... I was in a really happening band in the 80's and my keyboardist jonny had a korg (among other keys) that thru a card he could play what sounded like a real vocal choral that sounded really awesome. im now after a little over 20 years (do to a corporate job and then a stroke) starting to play and record again, i am setting up a home studio i can use from my wheelchair. I'd like to (affordable) replicate that choral sound for songs im going to write. Any suggestions?
@80sman80
@80sman80 10 месяцев назад
Hi, if the original choral sound came from a korg back in the 80s, it could have come from the famous korg M1 synthesizer. It had some beautiful choral sounds, used sound cards and was 1 of the top classic synths in its time. Korg now do a soft synth version which you pay for and download. It's excellent and has all the original 80s sounds from the synth and all it's subsequent sound cards, which may have been what your keyboard player was using? All you need is to download it and you can play it via any midi keyboard that has a USB connection. It does cost, but it's a great piece of synth software, which you can edit your sounds on the pc screen. Hope this helps.

Another question actually leading on from question I just asked, Does A/B/Fill A/Fill B count as 1 pattern or 4 patterns, thanks.
@80sman80
@80sman80 2 года назад
To answer both questions. 1. You can use the same patterns on different songs, thus saving you using too many numbered pattern slots. 2. Each pattern has both an A & B slots and also and A fill & B fill slots. So in principle, each pattern contains 4 sub patterns, that's 4 sub patterns within each main pattern slot, thus giving you loads of scope to write different patterns for a song.
@number1Don
@number1Don 2 года назад

@80sman80
@80sman80 3 года назад
"Take on me" took several hours to write on the SR18. Piecing the patterns together is the easier bit, its the pattern writing that takes time, especially if you are adding bass to the patterns. Adding bass means writing more patterns due to changes in bass lines. 1st job before you start a cover song like this, is to write out the structure 1st I.e. length of intro (number of bars) same for verses, chorus, bridge and outro. Also depends on how accurate you want your cover song to be against the original. Then you work out the length of the bars within those sections so your patterns fit.

How can I just copy some of the preset songs to the User or Pattern/Song section and rename them to build a setlist?
@80sman80
@80sman80 2 года назад
If you mean "how do you copy preset Patterns to user mode" ...just press copy/save and then choose the user destination and press Record/enter. Then once saved in User section, you can edit & rename them, then piece them together in Song mode, if you wish

@@geriblount4833 press the Pattern/Song button to get into song mode. My video on Song Mode, should help you piece patterns together to create songs. To put songs in correct order for a set list, use the copy button to move songs around.

What if your chorus and verse had different tempos, do you change that in your saved patterns?
@80sman80
@80sman80 3 года назад
In Song Mode, I've not yet found a way of changing the tempo in different parts i.e. verse and chorus, from that of the tempo saved for the whole song. However if you play in User pattern mode, then you have different tempos according to what was saved on each pattern and just alternate patterns

@@80sman80 I've managed to figure it out, stop the song you want to sort out, make sure you're in step edit and select what step you want to change, hold down tap tempo then press page up (or down) and it brings up a screen where you can change the tempo. I just need to sort out adding fills then i'm pretty much sorted.

When you piece together a song in song mode, the tempo you set it at overrides the tempo of a pattern.

The only major flaw with this unit is no last step setting. That is sorely needed. I need to set the last step in a pattern at 2/60 in step write and there is simply no way to do it. This makes keeping patterns in time that are different IMPOSSIBLE! ONLY WORK AROUND IT TO BE ABLE TO PUNCH IN PATTERNS MANUALLY WHILE RECORDING INTO A MULTI TRACK RECORDER. This means a lot of work and making different song patterns for the same song that you have to punch in manually. I may be able to fix it with the recorder's cut and paste features but that is not the way it should be. Just more added work and time to do something that basic that the machine should be able to do. And I mean ANY DRUM MACHINE! In the Alesis defense the Roland is no better because even though you can set a last step in the Roland, when you do, it changes all the other patterns in that bank to that last step. Dumb. Not to mention when you mix different patterns in the Roland it changes the timing on the symbols. Makes no sense. Pattern runs fine on its own but when you put in order with a different pattern then the symbols are the only thing out of time. What is wrong with these companies to have such simple easy to fix problems? Poor Poor Poor design.
