Hopefully the kids can actually PLAY the instruments and are naturally triple threats on stage, before they even audition. Otherwise, what’s the point? Who’s gonna suddenly learn a skill like that as a novice and expect to get the part? Also, assuming they’re all virtuosic triple threats, I’d assume they are just young performers who WANT to be there. They KNOW it’s gonna be work, high expectations, and they like performing so it’s worth it. This is where many of the stars of tomorrow begin.

It's true, the four kids here that play their own instruments are super talented and would have to already been skilled and practiced at their instruments when the part came around. The only other show that requires this much talent would have to be Matilda The Musical. They don't play instruments, but the show is highly choreographed (this one mostly involves jumping), the songs a bit more complex, and it's also a high energy marathon. Check out 'Naughty' and 'Revolting Children.'

+jmstolp444 Ehhhh, although School of Rock does look like a lot of fun, there is nothing based on this performance that would make me think it's anywhere in the same realm as Hamilton. Hamilton, in my book, is 1000% deserving of all of the recognition and love it has gotten; it is an incredible, pretty darn flawlessly crafted piece of art. Based on this performance, School of Rock looks really cute and well done but nothing terribly new. This has been an AMAZING Broadway and off-Broadway season, and even Hamilton aside there's still a number of shows I'd opt to see before School of Rock (The Color Purple, the Spring Awakening revival if it was still open, Waitress, and Dear Evan Hansen are the big ones on my to-see list, and Shuffle Along and She Loves Me seem like excellent productions for those who prefer more traditional theater faire). But yes, for what it's worth, Hamilton is only "overshadowing" everything else because many, many people agree that it actually IS indeed that good that even in a season full of wonderful productions, it dominates. I just can't see anything about School of Rock that would suggest it's more deserving. Which isn't to say it's not probably great and super cute and enjoyable!
