Weird I discover your channel the day I explain to someone how one of the band members of Teenage Fanclub has some of Chiltons ashes inside of his guitar...I like it

Emotional outpouring...psychosis...agreed. Chilton unintentionally created a work that is his version of the first two VU lps...not literally but his version of what AC was interpreting...ramshackled affair...but thats rock

This is quite an excellent review. I was afraid to click because 99% of the people who even know Chilton think that it was all downhill after Big Star. I love the Big Star records. But I wouldn't trade them all for "Flies."

Kenny, at this point and time in my life I prefer "Flies" as well. Part of the fun is going through the Alex journey, and that means going beyond The Box Tops and Big Star. An exceptional talent. I miss his presence on the Earth.

FYI ... almost immediately after posting my comment, I saw an interview with Martin Amis where the interviewer referenced artists with "robust careers" versus those with "shorter or less successful ones," artists "who seemed exciting at first, but didn't really keep up." And he offered Chilton as an example of the latter!!!!! Perfect example of what I was saying. lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-age-of-acceleration-an-interview-with-martin-amis/

There are artists who have up and downs, and for me, it's worth to stick with them for the up, because that will come around the corner. This last month I have listening to Brian Eno's later works, especially albums he did in the 1990s, and they are clearly worthwhile one's attention. Chilton is an artist that consistently moves, and it's not in the frame of mind of a person who was concerned with having or keeping a career. Alex was thinking out of the box. A true fan would love him for that

I thought that was well explained, and good analogy between the music and the Southern gothic literature, and with Tom Waits. I think Waits is actually quite meticulous in one he is achieving, even if it sounds off-kilter and baked up at 3 in the morning. There may have been some conscious attempt to 'deconstruct' on Chilton's part, but I think this record also reflects a particular state of mind that does not have such detachment from the process of creation. I think that's what you are getting at by saying Waits is in character. While Waits can and has been accepted and celebrated on a somewhat highbrow level, I think this is completely abandoning any possibility that most New York Times or Guardian readers are going to find is going to find it acceptable as 'alternative' dinner party music,.
