This is a great talk! Fossil Future is a very good text. I am listening to the audible of it now, and it is very slow going, repetitive, and rigorous. I have got about 4h into it, 12h to go... He is correct in pointing out that he wants his readers to think about the issue from a philosophical methodology, not a power engineering, or an activist point of view. The points he makes, like we are essentially using energy to have 60+ robots working for us to increase our production and productivity is very smart. He contrasts that with examples from 'The Gambia' in West Africa where babies were lost because they didnt have electricity at their finger tips to do things like ultrasounds and baby incubators. He is also very good at pointing out how 'the anointed', like Ehrlich, Hansen, Mann, etc are essentially ideologues, not experts; however, the catastrophe addicted MSM keep trotting these guys out as though they are giving us the best analysis of scientific progress on this issue, and they are not. In fact, they have made careers out of lobbying that humanity, except them of course, are basically bad; while the natural world is sacred and good. Epstein says when we bring our own welfare and thriving back as the main operating parameter of our economic system and policies, the environmentalist 'misanthropic' (ie human hating) claim that we should be trying to return the globe back to a 'natural' or 'wild' state comes undone. I do agree, that the best way forward is to get the poorer people and nations of the world using more energy, however we can. And we in the West should be using any additional amount of energy we think necessary to advance ourselves even more...
