I was so thinking that too. He free-solo'd El Capitan, so if he says he wants to do 5 pull-ups, he does 5 pull-ups and that's awesome. I think he was making the point that it's kind of silly and almost irrelevant how many pull-ups you can do because that doesn't determine your skill-level in rock climbing, necessarily. He's fascinating to listen to.

I must have re-watched the El Capitan bouldering problem in free solo 20 times the first time I watched it. The thumb holds alone are terrifying, even without the 2000ft drop, no ropes, and sketchy footholds. If you've not seen it, watch it! It's awesome, even if you're not into climbing.

The question about "how do climbers recover their gear when the finish climbing?", didn't really give me an answer that I could understand. When sport climbing or trad climbing, you take your own gear and and hook into the bolts (sport climbing), or attach your own safety devices (trad climbing). I understand that you can recover your rope easily, but how do you recover the safety devices, like the ones you hook to the bolts when sport climbing, or the ones you install in cracks and crevices when trad climbing? I'm not a climber, so excuse me if I didn't use the correct terms. This is a genuine question though, and any help understanding is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. ✌️

It seems like climbing freesolo and facing your own mortality in such a profound and undeniable way has a real way of instilling a constant chill into someone. I can't imagine Alex Honnold, like, getting angry in traffic, for example. Although he does have the eyes of a golden retriever lol so maybe I'm projecting an assumption onto him without any real basis. But I literally can't imagine Alex Honnold displaying legitimate rage, like that. He always seems profoundly chill and super content compared to the average person.

Recovery on the route: try what's called gtox. Basically, you shake your arm but then when it gets filled with blood, the gravity works against you, so you can raise your arm above your head for a couple of seconds to help the used blood drain out. It's pretty visual too, look at the veins on your forearm
