Dick Harpootlian was hired because he is a big name lawyer in this area that use to make people quake in their boots, but that was a long time ago. There’s a line that AM says that has always stuck with me. “Whoever did this was thinking about it for a long time.” It’s made me wonder when he first thought of doing it. When you see the timeline and the way he went from one piece to the next for his ‘alibi’ says a lot.

During one of the interviews when asked if they'd ever had an argument that had gotten physical Alex confirmed that there had been. Then Paul kept trying to find his pills and find out if he was using, but if Alex wasn't lying about the pain meds giving him energy... imagine someone trying to take your coffee and you have to go to work to provide for them. So around the same time Paul's gun goes missing. Seems like he may have started planning that far back.

For a long time I found Paul Murdaugh an unsympathetic victim, but the more I heard about what he was like when he wasn’t drinking, the more I felt for him. According to friends and family members like his uncle, he was a hard worker, conscientious, fun and a loyal friend. He also cared very much for Gloria Satterfield, the housekeeper and woman who has been instrumental in raising him and served as a mother figure. It appears his mother neglected him and she and Alex started and encouraged the drinking. Maggie Murdaugh had numerous photos of Paul with alcohol on her Facebook page that she had liked. I think Paul also had his dad’s number and didn’t have much respect for him, although he would call his grandfather when he was in trouble and wanted granddad to fix it. If you’ve grown up with that, had a mother who constantly told you, “You’re a Murdaugh.”, to tell you how special your family name is, there aren’t too many young people I’d think who wouldn’t follow protocol. Yes, Paul obviously had a drinking problem, was likely an alcoholic and, unfortunately, had a 180 degree personality change when drinking, but it sure doesn’t seem his parents tried to get him help. I wonder if they had seen “Timmy” come out or had even heard of the aggression and belligerence, although, it really doesn’t matter in regards to trying to get him help, because it’s certain to me they had seen him many, many times drinking to excess. At almost three times the legal limit when the accident occurred, for this guy to even be conscious at that level speaks to long-term, heavy drinking. Anyway, Paul didn’t deserve to die, to never have the chance to get sober, and to know with horror that it was his father killing him.
@cassiedion4144

Exactly. People want to diagnose Alex with antisocial personality disorder or sociopathy, but I would think he also has borderline personality disorder and adhd. The very things he was most likely shamed for as a child and ended up hating about himself and then Paul. Waters hit the nail on the head, he could not handle the shame. I really wish they'd start teaching a little psychology/emotional intelligence in public school. At least play some Brené Brown videos.

Rogan testimony just killed Alex. Short, sweet, courageous, and believable. As soon as he heard Alex’s story he knew that Alex was lying. He loved the whole family, and had to carry this knowledge around for a long time. Did Alex ever try and manipulate Rogan like he did the housekeeper and caretaker? I may have missed it. Alec Murdaugh and his spawn wielded and relied on his father's immense power over law enforcement every moment until the old crook died (and after when they could manage it). Alec was treated as his dad's mouthpiece in the solicitors' office, where "whatever Murdaugh says goes" was what the boss told anyone who asked. The night of the boat crash, Randolph and all his sons were out "fixing" Paul's mistakes, like they always did, covering up for the drunken crackups without regard to the risks to others. That their collective efforts centered on first, preventing the finding of Mallory Beach to spare Paul the charges and second, framing another young man as the driver of the boat, made abundantly obvious to everyone concerned that they sought to protect Paul by sacrificing the lives of Paul's friends and victims. Randolph even snarled at Mallory's mother, when she spoke of trying to find her, how 'we all know how that's gone' and so the dead girl was of no importance, not when his youngest grandson was at fault and in danger of consequences. Connor Cook grew up aware of the Murdaughs' reputation, their known power in the justice system and unscrupulous corruption of it when their own protection required it. He feared, knowing they sought to frame him as the driver instead of Paul, they would then silence him by some fatal accident nobody saw, that no police would ever investigate. Like the boat captain set to testify the next day about a Murdaugh's extensive drug smuggling network, who walked into a semi (according to local police!).. Or like the quadriplegic accident victim whose majority at 18 would soon have revealed the depletion of his trust accounts, Murdaugh having stolen all his settlement funds-- a discovery prevented only by the accidental death of the client, his ventilator somehow having unplugged itself. Such an inexplicable random event, yet so enormously fortuitous it was for one man connected with the case, what are the odds? Murdaugh even represented the bereaved family in the wrongful death suit over that "mysterious unplugging" at the nursing home, only to steal those settlement funds in turn. Does a pattern begin to emerge, of how this man coaxed and massaged profits out of so many deaths, so many deaths so fortuitous for Murdaugh, for the power and prestige. and therefore impunity and wealth, of the clan-members? If the analyses of Alex Murdaugh's motives for murder have left out anything, I think it's the relevance to Alec of his father's imminent demise and how that would alter his chances of getting away with the murders and thus excising, as he would have seen it, the routes through which his own reputation was critically vulnerable: Maggie's forensic accountant. Paul's criminal charges, and the liability implied by numerous family videos of Paul drinking being mostly of her rather than him. His own authority and credit was always tied to his dad's, and many things would shift unpredictably for Alec once his father's life ended, with all the certainty of impunity being his dad's son meant all his life. I found it telling how Murdaugh misled police from the start and continued to present a version of their life in which Maggie had not moved out, as though she still shared a house with him, despite testimony from her own family and closest friends that she now lived in another house and had consulted a divorce lawyer and had a forensic accountant recommended to help her sort out the money since her husband, as she said, would not be honest with her. Nor was he honest, she gauged, in his communications with her that last day about coming to his house rather than going home to her own; she said, on the way there, he was "up to something" and she'd have to find out what it was.

Wow Judith! You've taken the testimony and interpretation of "what happened when" in this video & extended it with a more full interpretation of the privilege and multi-generational entitlement of the family and the man. That entitlement led to skewed ethics and values, allowed deceit and lies, possibly murder of associates, and makes believable the psychology of a man that would murder his family - which I had trouble accepting because it's so heinous. You clarified - and I do accept it now.

I bet Alex bent down before shooting because he thought he could confuse the evidence. If you're 6'3 & most aren't that narrows the suspects a little & points the finger more towards you. So I bet he actually planned that stance on purpose.

I’m from sc (about 2 hrs away from Hampton, I’m in the peedee region, but kind of in between if that makes sense since like Marion county(super close to my town) is considered more that region) and we are very close to Columbia (which is in the other direction, 1 he if traffic is bad) and we knew about this family around here. Like especially when Stephen was found dead and that was just totally covered up. Buster constantly travels all around and he’s kind of distinct looking. No one wanted to fuck with these people. I don’t know much about AM or Maggie. But Buster for the most part was honestly polite. I’m sure most people who comment on here who are from sc and certain parts, especially if you’re in the midlands or low country then you’ve ran across this family or knew someone who knew someone in the family because they were damn everywhere. No one in SC (at least where I’m at) didn’t think for a damn second that Alex was innocent. I was surprised he actually was convicted though, we all thought he’d get off because that family has always been corrupt. It’s just weird seeing people who everyone in your town knew about get gunned down and then finally the family name is in the mud. Glad he was convicted. Justice for all the people he ripped off. Justice for Stephen. Justice for Mallory. There are sooooo many victims.

They lie cheat and steal through life. Sad sad people.

He likely wore 1 of the rain jackets in full view of Paul and Maggie , whilst hosing out the kennels, it had been disposed of with his clothes. The other rain jacket had been used to wrap the guns in, I wonder why he didn’t dispose of it, a trophy maybe, it didn’t have human biological material on its, hence the 2 rain jackets.

Eventually, when he's no longer the center of attention, he'll have this great story to tell and someone else to blame. The CFO was asking him to prove to her the money wasn’t missing (the firm didn’t know about all of it yet) when he received a call notifying him that his father was being put on hospice- doctors couldn’t do anything else for him. At that point the CFO said the conversation became personal (she knew him since she was 16). She testified that later that day, she was surprised he was still in the office. Of note - he never did go see his father although his father’s turn for the worse was his excuse to get Maggie to come home.

I saw another video that posited the moment with the CFO might have been the moment Murdaugh decided to do the murders. He was having an unwanted confrontation over his wrongdoings, but as soon as he got the call about his father, the CFO felt sympathy for him and let him off the hook, for the moment at least. So how could he get people to let him off the hook for even longer? What if his wife and son were murdered and he was left alone and grieving? Not saying the idea to commit the murders only occurred right then, I think he was probably mulling it over for a while. But it's possible that's the moment he made up his mind. And it certainly got him out of the hearing on Paul's boating accident and having to disclose his finances, which was set to occur days later. Also the possible reason for the fake hit/ suicide attempt; he thought garnering sympathy would get people to stop looking into his other crimes.

The racial breakdown of family annihilators follows percentage of population almost exactly. In the U.S., the majority are white, so therefore, most family annihilators are as well. Whatever percentage of the population you are, the percentage of offenders who are you race/ethnicity will follow suit. There are also many female family annihilators.
