Alex Rawlings - How to learn and maintain multiple foreign languages 

The main reason why not many people are polyglots is because it takes a lot of time and you need motivation, not from a wish of impressing others or boasting about your skills, but from a genuine love towards languages. You need to sit down and do it, be aware of your progression and don't have yourself be let down when you don't see a development. It just takes time. Be patient and enjoy the process, enjoy new structures, sounds, and later on literature, movies, cultural stuff. If you feel frustrated, go and get yourself a cup of tea or coffee, have a walk, recline and go back to your learning later. And remind yourself: It takes time.

*haw do we learn a language؟ 1 set realistic goals. 2 get materials to work with. 3 allocate time. 4 review 5 keep constant track of your progress. 6 make changes. * how do we speak a language 1 locate resources. - find a way to practice the language. 2 find a teacher who knows how to do error correction. 3 cultural contact. * how do we keep speaking a language 1 integrate language learning into your life - visit the country where it's spoken -consider spending long amount of time in an immersive environment . - consider relocation - remote immersive - reduce the amount you use your L 1 . - read / watch TV / listen to the news . - exclusively in other languages.

I first tried to learn French 35 years ago, with evening classes, and then lived in Montreal for two years. I didn’t do very well, because I didn’t understand the process of learning a language, and I was self conscious. Alex is right, you don’t do classes and expect the teacher to do the work for you. And in my opinion group classes are pointless. Today we have so many resources available including language apps, spaced repetition apps and podcasts.

I think it's interesting that he says in secondary schools we are all guilty of expecting too much of our teachers (I.e. That they will teach us a language) but I think this is unfair on your average 12yo, who actually, didn't ask to be taught French and on the whole, has no real motivation to learn the language. School languages are not the same as learning a language, it's like any other lesson in school, doing just enough to pass the exams and have your teachers not be disappointed in you.

Gawd, I hope the conference upgraded their microphones to include Pop Filters since this 2014 conference. Good talk, but the pops are out of control. Also, the battery was running out towards the end. Ugh.

The teacher's so-called Yiddish is strictly "from hunger". She has a distinct foreign (English) accent and no authentic Yiddish phraseology. She says "ikh lern klasn" = I teach classes, which is absolutely wrong. In authentic Yiddish one says IKH FIR-ON MIT KURSN or, on the university level, IKH LEYEN LEKTSYES. She seems to be teaching here, there and everywhere, and she's barely a beginner. As far as Yiddish intonation is concerned, she doesn't even know what it is. The young man is well-intentioned, but he won't get very far with a teacher who is unaware of her own incompetence. His little speech is not representative of Yiddish; however, it does resemble Yiddish more than it does Japanese (a little humor). In Yiddish you can say IKH KNEL IDESH MIT TALMIDIM. That's a wonderful traditional Yiddish sentence. In many instances, unfortunately, the teaching of Yiddish is presently on the rock-bottom level. LOMIR HOFN, AZ MESHIAKH VET KUMEN INGIKHN, UN IDESH-LOSHN VET UFGIRIKHT VERN.

Russian, Serbian, Hungarian, Spanish, Arfikaahns, German... OMG how many languages does he speak?! :O I speak Russian, English, some French (because I am Russian living in Canada) and want to learn German and some Finno-Ugric language, because I have Finno-Ugric roots. (P.S. I heard that Afrikaans is basically a German dialect)

first of all u need to know why u wanna be a polyglot..?if u are passionated by languages...u need motivation and skills to achieve ur goal..but it's not enough ..u need to have a cultural back ground..and the technical methods..how we translate from one language to another....

1 hour per day?...bollocks...I studied Russian 6 hours everyday for 6 months...even saturdays and sundays,listening podcast...1 classic movie everyday,talking to myself,1 hour lesson with a teachr on skype,reading as much as possible...and now...Hell yes...I can state categorically that I achieved my goal... trust me...if you study 15 minutes everyday...you won't get anything...I'm sorry the more you work the better...it's always been like that.
