Alex Rudinger - Conquering Dystopia - "Ashes Of Lesser Men"

I've gotten a lot of requests to do more Conquering Dystopia play-through's. So here's 'Ashes Of Lesser Men', one of my personal faves!
The drum kit that I'm using here belongs to my good friend Alex Markidies. My new Tama kit is still being built so he was kind enough to let me borrow his to record a few videos. Sounds and looks beautiful - it's an early model B/B. Sizes 8", 10", 12", 14", 22". The snare is one of mine, 14" by 6" Starphonic Brass. Might be my favorite snare I've recorded with!
Big thanks also goes to Adam 'Nolly' Getgood who did the mixing for this video. He was able to bring out some characteristics that I'm not used to hearing from recording in my basement. Couldn't be happier, sounds great! Alex & Nolly: Two incredibly sick guys!

This video was all done in one take. I used 4 different HD Camera's. I've gotten a lot of questions about what kind of Cameras I use, so for anyone who is interested here you go -
Canon HF11 - front left angle
Canon T3i - front right angle, camera belongs to good buddy Anup
Canon HV30 - back right angle
Sony HDR XR500V - back left angle

For this video I used an array of - mostly - Byzance & MB20 cymbals, Clear Emperors on toms, Coated Controlled Sound on snare, and Clear PS3 on Kick.

I can't even begin to fathom the amount of effort it took on your part to master all the details, structures and technical challenges that make up this track and all the others of the album. Being a reasonable experienced guitarist, I know how much can go into practicing complex music, but drummers of your caliber; man, do I have great respect for you!

If you look at his kit, he has two sets of high hats so he doesn't have to cross sticks and he alternates with left and right hand. It's a great fill indeed.

The mix actually sounds a lot better than the over-saturated one on the album. It's the main reason why I don't really listen to it : it's compressed to shit, and hurts my ears. Great job Alex, you never dissapoint.

The drumwork is flawless as always. For this track alone Alex wrote more and more interesting fills and arrangements than you'd find on whole albums of some contemporary metal bands :P

His double-bass / kicks are so clean. He does not need to swivel (maybe just a TINY bit), which I find pretty impressive and he can keep the balance on/@ his calves alone without rotating or shuffling. I rarely find metal drummers who can keep the balance using just their calves staying that perpendicular to the floor, kicking at that speed. That's learned technique, and again I don't know too many drummers who can do this without depending on their entire leg (swivel) to generate kicks @ over 240 bpm. Good on you Alex, it IS possible!

And might I suggest challenging yourself to playing strictly righty or lefty so that ALL of us can seek significant influence from you in learning songs? Obviously, as a life-long drummer, I admire the ambidextrous concept for all drummers, especially in the metal genre. But, some things are still easier to learn one way an progressively transition to other ways! Thanks, brother!

Quick question, in terms of your double bass chops, how long did it take you to get your head around using the floating foot technique? And also is applying snare drum studies (eg - accent studies, rudimentary solos etc) useful for developing proficiency with the pedals? Very nice work, and inspirational as always!

I think…. When he started playing he was a left handed person playing a right handed drum set. And because of that became ambidextrous , I play open handed as well. Well done

You always nail your play-throughs but I personally enjoyed this a bit more than normal. Sounds really well balanced, groovy at times and you are having fun playing it. Great job.
