This the speech attributed to Alexander by the historian Arrian (92-175 AD), said to have been sent to the defeated Darius, King of Persia after the battle of Guagamela in 331 BC.
Though he wrote his account 'The Anabasis', several hundred years after Alexander's time, his account of the Macedonian ruler turned' King of the World' is thought to be one of the more accurate.

It did not. Persians were great warrior and culturally superior than Greeks of that time. Only thing that caused Persian to fall was internal conflict and it also became too big in areas that having 100% control on all part of Persian land was not possible. Later same thing happened to Alexander's empire too. Even Alexander took over Persia he realised that Persians are culturally superior compared to Macedonians. So he started adopting Persian culture and traditions. Because of this behaviour of Alexander, Macedonian citizens and army mutinied multiple times.

@BrettonFerguson
@BrettonFerguson 4 года назад
It's a dumb argument for Slavs to make. Back then there were no Slavs. Celtic, German, Slav, were all the same with small changes from tribe to tribe. Back then they were all Scythian. The furthest "Germanic" tribe to the west was more similar to the Celtic tribe next to it than they were to a Germanic tribe furthest east. And the "Germanic" tribe furthest east were closer to Slavs than to any Germanic tribes furthest west. The tribes conquered by Rome ended up being called Celts, the ones not conquered were called German, the tribes conquered by Huns and even later Mongols were called Slavs. But in 200 BC there were no Slavs, Celts, or Germans.
@klyanadkmorr
@klyanadkmorr 2 года назад
History shows Slavs weren't even that large of a tribe people back then & only later with the growth of Rus & trading & decline of Byzantine did they migrate south. This is a innovative direction, for one of the best "History" channels, on "the RU-vid," platform. As a long time sub, I for one, greatly appreciate this move. Sadly "History," like many subjects in academia, is under assault by certain political ideologies, and their revisionist interpretations of history, for their own purposes. Nial Fergeson [sic] pointed this out a few years ago, when he read out Stanford University's history courses, on offer. What better way to thwart this "re-interpretive" trend, than returning to the original sources, in their own words. Well Done! KOut
@andeve3
@andeve3 4 года назад
History has been re-interpreted several times before; after the christening of Europe, during the Renaissance, during the Reformation, during the Enlightenment, during the age of national romanticism, and so on. This is inevitable, we can't thwart it. Furthermore history was always political, this is especially obvious in roman original sources, or in Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Lastly, it's just comical that Ferguson complains about politics in historical scholarship, when he is an explicitly political writer.

Honest questions: can what is said here be likened to the divide between US Constitutional Originalists/Strict constructionists versus Living document types? If so, I think there might be a point to be made here no matter where we're all coming from politically. The Persians were the Persians, their history, culture, and aims were all their own, and are documented well enough. The beef Alexander had here was legit. His character and abilities, the history and culture of Macedonia, and his acts are all documented well enough. At some point, isn't reading different narratives into history disingenuous? Note, none of this is meant to be lofty, or antagonistic. I'm perfectly able and pleased to like you guys just fine, even if we don't agree.

ALEXANDER's genius at warfare makes one marvel at his youth. But his interpersonal skills reveal the 20-something upstart with a lot to learn. Compare e,g, Darius' friendliness to the conquered, knowing just when to switch off the insults and become the hero of Marduk., the Jews' Messiah. That Hellenization won out eventually, over centuries, to some degree, owes little to Alexander and his warrior successors. Greek culture was probably just hard to resist.

You invaded Macedonia and the Rest of Greece. It's like saying you invaded Athens, or Sparta, or Thebes, or Argos, or Messinia, or .... And the Rest of Greece. Macedonia, just like all the other Greek city states/kingdoms shared a Greek culture and language. Spartans to the Athenians were barbaric. Just like the Macedonians. Obviously because anyone who was not like the Ionian Greeks in terms of their politics, certain cultural practices or their accent was a barbarian. The other point I hear so often is: but the macedonians ruled over the rest of Greece (except for Sparta). As if Sparta in the Pelloponisian war didn't rule over Athens. As if some states in the land we call Ancient Greece did not have the same motivations. Macedonians themselves proclaimed to be sons and daughters of the Argead dynasty, with their roots from Argos-Pelloponese. Meaning that they were Dorian Greeks. For whoever wants to check something interesting. Go check the ancient Macedonian calendar. How different is it from other Greek city state's calendars.

This event was recorded by the Prophet Daniel about 300 years before it occurred. Daniel penned this around the year 590 BCE, Daniel chapter 8: 5 As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between its eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground. 6 It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at it in great rage. 7 I saw it attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it; the goat knocked it to the ground and trampled on it, and none could rescue the ram from its power. 8 The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off, and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.
