"He's the best stickhandler I've ever seen. Quickness. Hands. A much better stickhandler than me. He's got the talent to be the best player in the world." - Mario Lemieux
@ThisIsALongDrive It's like when Gretzky says stuff like "Crosby could break all my records" lol. You take it with a grain of salt. These old school greats are modest as hell to the point of ridiculousness.
@@Patt187 he had the stickhandling but he wasnt great in all aspects of the game. im a huge kovy fan, ill go as far as to say he was equal to datsyuk in stick handling, deking, shootouts, etc. and his game vision was good. however, he was a notoriously lazy skater, and took a lot of stupid penalties. offensively he was more than good, but his weaknesses and unwillingness to change his style left him as a low high-tier offense player. if this was ea sports, his wrist shot and stickhandling would be at 95 but his overall would still be in the 82-84 range. low discipline, low defensive awareness, low shot blocking, low speed and acceleration, low toughness and aggressiveness, but very high agility, stickhandling, shooting and hand-eye coordination
@@simplyskrypt3914 his speed and skating were actually really good…when he tried. I watched him a lot and his highlights, he was one of the top offensive players as you said. His shot, stick handling, vision, dekes and passing were right up there. Everything else though, outside of the o zone, was not great. He was a one way player, which is fine, but again agreeing with you, he was lazy everywhere else on the ice. He really had the skills and hockey IQ to be a true top tier forward, just didn’t care enough to get there.
When he broke in with the Rangers...I remember reading..."He's the Russian Gretzky"....maybe not, but his peers thought ALOT of him. Anytime NHL players were asked who made them say WOW..."KOVALEV" or "AK" was heard 95% of the time. That's high praise.
Boy he was some kind of talent. As a Pens fan I've been very luck to see some of the all time best and Kovalev was right up there with them. In today's NHL that relies on skill he might have been a top 5 guy.
There was a game with the Habs where he scored a goal. The puck went in vertically in a very very narrow space above the goalie’s shoulder who was hugging the post. When interview post-game about his goal he said “there wasn’t enough room for me to put it in top corner, so I decided to shoot the puck vertically to fit it in”. 😂 Fucken legend.
In 2001 they only played together on the power play. In 2001 Kovalev played with Straka and Lange which was arguably one of the best lines in hockey that year.
Corrie Brown He was my favorite player ever and had the greatest natural skill I've ever seen. If Keenan and Campbell hadn't screwed with him early in his career he could've been the greatest ever!
We love the Kovalev! I loved him as a Ranger and I just had to root for the Pens during this period of the NHL. I even got a Pens fleece jacket that I called "The Kovalev Jacket".
The last Goal is a perfect Example of a Old School Goalie and today's (2020) Style. Brodeur was a Stand Up Style Goalie this is why he was weaker than a Butterfly Style Goalie who could probably save the last Goal. Think Kovalev would put the Puck in anyway today.
Yeah, you guys are right. He sucks so bad. Winning almost 700 games, 3 cups, multiple Vezinas, more playoff games than anyone except Roy. Etc, etc, etc
I really wish this particular penguins team would have won the cup. It would have been great to see Kovalev, Straka, Lang, Kasparitis, Hrdina, Morozov, etc hoist the cup.
Yeah they just never had the goaltending or depth at defense, that's why they were so eager to select Fleury in 2003 but by then it took a couple of years for him to develop as they had just gone into a rebuild
Kevin Reid they were stacked yet still were going bankrupt because at the end of this season is where it all started to unravel starting with the lopsided Jagr trade. UnfortuNately they didn’t have an answer for the NJ trap and the Pens defense was average. They were so top heavy on offense.
No the skating cartoon penguin is better. This logo is neat, but it looks more like a robotic pigeon than a penguin. Would be great if the Pens brought it back as an alternate, but only an alternate.
