Alexey Shirov’s knights are maxed out

Featured is the game between Alexey Shirov and Magaram Magomedov from 1989. In response to Magomedov's idea of deploying his bishop to f5, Shirov, still a teenager during this game, spices up the Queen's Gambit Declined with his 7th move, f3. Shortly thereafter, a dynamic position emerges, including a material advantage, multiple isolated pawns, an unopposed bishop, a slight lead in development, and an uncastled king. After the 26th move, we witness an aesthetic positioning of Shirov’s knights who cover a maximum number of squares in Magomedov’s camp.
I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly. Kf2 is so cold! Thanks Jerry for the great content, and for covering players in addition to Fischer, Morphy, Kasparov, and Carlsen! I love all these players, but getting to see why renowned non-world champ players like Ivanchuk, Shirov, etc are great is a real treat!

A great way of presenting chess games. Very educational. Amazing how much the top tier "sees" in a situation!

I’ve watched a ton of chess on RU-vid, and I sincerely believe that this is the best chess channel out there. Each position is thoroughly analyzed, and nothing is glossed over. I’ve learned more from this channel than any of the others. Really well done, Jerry, and thank you for the educational chess content!

Thank you, Jerry. That's a very interesting game. Kf2 was quite a surprise. Amazing how these top players calculate all the possibilities.

Beautiful game! This goes to show that concrete analysis is more important than principles. Instead of occupying the open files white activates the pair of knights and goes for the win. I wish I would have understood this better when I was a beginner. It would have saved me a lot of headaches. Thanks for another great game analysis! Cheers!

I often get the correct move in your quizzes - but, again it’s only by blind feeling; I usually can’t provide the followup line. But this! This 32. K-B2!? That was downright occult! I’d come up with most any other legal move before I found *that* . I echo many of the other Commenters here in the various ways you’re to be thanked for this, Jerry.

Suggestion: how about going through decisive games from a particular world championship. Tal vs Botvinnik 1961 would be very interesting as there's no games from that WC

I'm more afraid of a pair of great knights than bishops. I think it's because knights can get unpredictable and you can fall into forks and such nasty tactics.
