In this video we wet sand and polish the Alexseal Jet Black paint on our sealine Sc35 project boat. We also add the final touches to the now fully restored transom door.

Loving this build, good channel. You guys do things meticulously and explain each step thoroughly. Sure, progress is slow but you're limited to time you can spend on her. Really looking forward to engine, systems and interior fit when you get there. Keep it up fella's.

Thank you for posting this video. I just finished painting the topsides of a 45 foot sailboat with 501 and like you, I have decided to sand and polish. You give me hope that I will eventually get there. The 501 is amazing paint but straight off the roller the result is just not where I want it to be. I got some orange peel and with unavoidable dust in the air there are too many imperfections that have to go. Andy from Boatworks Today, whom you mention elsewhere, recommended taking it to 2000 grit before polishing while other channels have gone as far as 4000. I am looking at 400 ft2 of surface so plenty of room to experiment 😂. Wish me luck.

The results were good, but we were hoping for better, the flatting and polishing took days of work. We used 1000 grit followed by 1500 and 2000. We have subsequently repainted the front again as we sanded through and we had better results using a higher percentage of brush reducer and mohair rollers. Apart from some inevitable dust, the Alexseal topcoat flowed out much better the second time and will need little to no Sanding.

So that rotary didn’t swirl the paint? Regardless of the pad a rotary usually swirls my work up and forces me to polish afterward. Interesting if you don’t have this issue

Looks fine under indoor lighting but as soon as the sun light hits it those swirls always stand out

We had no problems using a yellow wool pad and Festool polish. Looked fine under sunlight and inspection light. You could use a DA and FG400 to remove fines scratches if needed….

What grit were you wet sanding with and what compound were you using to polish the finish?

We used 1000 followed by 1500 and 2000. We used a yellow wool pad with Festool polish...

Can you tell if the yellow wool pad made difference in the finish ? I'm in the process of buffing my own Alexseal project using the white bonnet with the Totalboat compound and even though it's white paint I still think I'm going to have use a finishing polish and a foam pad because if the scratches...

The yellow wool pad worked really well and didn't leave any scratches for us. Alexseal recommend using a yellow wool pad as a standard white wool pad is too aggressive.

I read that on the data sheet but the fellow I bought the paint off of told me once it's cured you can use the white. I let it dry 2 weeks and wet sanded it 1200/2000 but definitely too many scratches. Heard a lot of good things about that compound but it very thin, flies all over the place and the pad never really dries so I'm going to have to move onto a plan B...@@boatholic4458

@@stephenfoster4255 We had seen Andy on the Boatworkstoday RU-vid channel get great results with Alexseal with a roller. In hindsight the rollers recommended to us by our local supplier probably didn’t give us the best finish. This was our first time using marine paint, we learnt a lot and would definitely do things differently next time…
