An Alfa Romeo Alfetta jumping and wobbling gauge needle may with time affect the spring in the speedometer gauge so it gets stuck at low speeds. Here's how you fix it. In this video the Alfetta needle spring had ended up in a position that restricted the needle to move up above 20km/h, and the video shows how it was fixed.
A small comment: the coiled metal wire was found to have a small kink about 1 meter from the attachment to the transmission. Since the coiled metal wire is held inside another coil inside the jacket, it was impossible to bend it back nicely. The above video shows a solution that worked 3 times thru the inspection. I then changed the entire wire setup to a new old stock - and all vibrations and wobbling completely disappeared. It’s now rock steady.

It's still jumping after all that work but I think I know where the problem is. When you ran the tachometer using just the drill, it wasn't jumping. That started after you connected it all back which means the resistance is somewhere in the cable conduit. Is the conduit going from the transmission to the tachometer smoothly or does it have too many sharp angles? Could something be pressing up against it? Believe me, I KNOW HOW ANNOYING it is taking off a whole dashboard and dealing with 60 different screws in 8 different sizes.

You’re right on it, it’s a direct connection straight from transmission into a smooth running tachometer, and as you said, there is a kink. I showed it to my old man and it’s like someone had bent the cable in the hose, all of it, once back in time. The job in the video did take us through the inspection and was made at a point when it actually was running so bad that every other day it got stuck completely the needle. Seems like one can only do it so much and gettin a new one, well 40 year old one is the way to go. It’s problematic to straighten the kink out because the hose the wire is running in has like an embedded metal coil in its jacket and no matter how much you try to straighten the hose/jacket, the coil inside is fine so it doesn’t get straight inside the plastic. The wire in itself is no problem getting straight. Good input, thx!

Is the last part of the video suppose to show the end result?

Yes, not perfect yet, but in the beginning (not shown) it was stuck. Someone had bent the cable at 3:27 (in the video). I believe that still had an impact.

That's unfortunate that after all your work it's still not stable :/ That's the kind of things that would drive me crazy, to look at that shaking needle :)

My old man whom bought the car says that those gauges were never really stable. I don't know if that is true?!:-)
