This performance has you appreciate what Roger was able to do. This song and the rest of this whole record is not easy to sing. Alfie does great. Roger just takes this tune to a whole different level.

Opera voices are the best, most highly trained voices in the world. If you want virtuoso musicians, if you value the best athletes, if you like gourmet food, if you appreciate fast cars......then by god, celebrate operatic voices!!

The song is tailor-made for an operatic voice... Daltrey set the template, no doubt but Alfie is terrific

Thanks for appreciating a different version. Roger will never be duplicated, but there is something satisfying about knowing the song can be sung by someone else and still be enjoyable.

Classic Quadrophenia IS an opera. Pete Townshend hand-picked the best tenor in the U.K.for this album. (Roger Daltrey is all about posturing and stage craft during Love reign O'er Me, but his rendition does not SOUND good!! He doesn't hit the notes.) The people right there in the audience gave Alfie a standing ovation.....Just close your eyes and listen.

Ella Fitzgerald called vibrato "the soul of the voice." Boe doesn't "do" it, that's his natural voice. That vibrato gives a micro-second of rest, it protects the voice. That and Boe's training, and he'll still be singing into his sixties. Unlike Daltrey, and other rock and pop singers some who need surgery even in their 20s. Btw, Roger likes Alfie.

Great voice, but totally.. not the classic who sound. Roger Dawltry brought that unleashed power to the song, this guy is just an opera singer. What is this beauty and the beast........tales as old as time?? c'mon man! You gotta belt it out !... ahhhhhhhh!!! RAIN ON MEEEE!!!!!

The way roger sang it was full of rage and desperation, in this version there's no emotion, it's too "Perfect" it's a bit superficial, whereas the music of the who is based on those emotions... but outstanding voice anyway it just doesn't fit with thé rage of thé who

Unfortunately Roger can't sing it anymore because of throat surgery. But this guy was NOT the right choice to replace him, Roger gave Pete's music a sharp edge that it desperately needed.

Are you judging by just this? A heavily edited fragment of the song? Or have you watched the clips from Tanglewood, the Met, LA? There's a lot of passion on display.

@@hecate235 Agree with you hecate235. It is sad when a great voice such as Boe (or Pavorotti?) is considered too perfect. These people probably think Hamlet would have been better with more grammatical errors and misspellings.

Yes. As Jimmy comes to his epiphany and is reduced to exposing his naked pain, he's stretched beyond his limits. Roger's version is strained, he's expressing raw emotion as he pleads for release. It's a prayer imperfect in ideal form, but absolutely true in its emotion. The longing, the expression of release, the pleading. Whatever imperfections he expresses are ultimately in service to the performance. This performance may be technically superior, but Roger's is better.

On the one hand Townsend wrote it and has the right to perform it any way he see's fit. But this current iteration pales in comparison to the original recording and live WHO performances. IMO the only way it should be heard is with Roger Daltrey on lyrics, when he was in his prime. Other than that, I say Pete should throw in the towel and forget about performing Who songs live and featuring... uh... um... Robert Goulet-ish vocalists.

I m sorry (don't come for me,) the guy is a good singer but I have heard a million times better, other people singing this song. Eddie Vedder comes to.mind. Sorry.
