I'm beginning to think Schnittke is considerably more important than Shostakovich - I know that such comparisons are senseless - but there must be markers for aesthetic merit. I think DSCH started something and was restricted from its full pursuit that Schnittke much more than makes up for. I can't listen to the big DSCH orchestral works any more with perhaps the exception of last 3 symphonies while Schnittke continues to deliver more and more.

x_mander I think that each one was equally important, each in a special way. Shostakovich brought about a cultural and idealistic revolution with his somewhat tonal music (most of his scherzos in symphonies and his 8th string quartet depict the brutality of totalitarianism), but Schnittke helped bring in a new world of color. Just some friendly advice: listen to DSCH's 10th symphony. It, too, depicts totalitarianism, but the 3rd movement also illustrates his love for one of his students, Elmira (E La Mi Re A motif). Not that I prefer one or the other.. Both are my favorites..
