Nice video. Just FYI, the pictures at 6:27 and 19:03 are cladophora. The picture at 19:49 is not. Also, nuisance cladophora is not the same kind as the moss ball cladophora. Cladophora is one of the few algaes that cannot travel through air spores. It will only enter your tank on shoddy live plants, which is where the moss ball myth comes from. I've beaten it before and here's some tips: It thrives in a high tech tanks unfortunately, because it has a plant-like structure that is much more similar to a moss than an algae. This prevents it from being eaten by algae eaters or outcompeted by plants for nutrients. The way i got rid of it was by reducing lighting massively for many months, and spot dosing liquid carbon heavily. A black out will not work, as it can survive for a while in the dark, it must be outcompeted for light by other plants. Once you've got it, you will never be rid of it fully, but you can manage it, so don't freak out.

I really enjoy these informative videos. I just brought home my 225 gallon aquarium (850L) and I have one oase biomaster thermo 850 canister filter. Our house is at 69F or 20.5C which is why i bought the thermo version. Should I add another biomaster 850? It will be a heavily planted tank with both rocks (haven't decided which rocks yet) and several pieces of twisted galapagos jungle wood (currently soaking them to remove tanins).

Have been fighting an algea attack for the past months...even with co2 it kept getting worse. What I found to be the problem was too much water disturbance from my filter letting all the co2 out, placing my co2 device on the other side of the tank also helped. This worked for me, probably not for all of you.

7:16 I agree with all these points except for filtration. I don't think filtration prevents algea except maybe for tanks with overpopulation and not enough plants. Plants already take up ammonium. Actually they prefer ammonium to nitrates. They consume ammonium first.

The worst is - you got all too fast. In many hobbies usually it is you who set a difficulty level. You never learn driving with Ferrary or McLaren, right? With an aquarium you just get all at once.. Full speed from the day1. Take and enjoy.. You just think - 1. Ok, will feed the fishes and enjoy the view.. 2. Ok. Clean and water change once a week. 3. plants dont grow - fertilisers? 4. Light. 5. plants just dissolve and dont grow - another light which is stronger 6. too much light, algae and no bubbles - CO2. 7. overdosing CO2 - all snails are dead (surprisingly no ammonia peak detected). 8. water tests 9. fertilisers (another)+tests to keep all as it should 10. sudden GDA. 11.12.13.... It all in less than a year! The worst, as for me, is - you dont see the direct impact of changes you just did. "after some change wait couple of weeks". Terrible speed! And all of it - without your direct wish. You actually just wanted nice relaxing view of planted aquarium and to feed fishes :) Having GDA and waiting for 3 weeks (as one of solutions) I did not see appearance of other algae which should be treated now.. nice :( I also now close to give up..

I'm so pleased that you confirmed my thoughts on marimo moss balls. I had one for around 3 years in my tank, then it began to fall apart. I had no idea how dangerous this was, and I just put the smaller pieces around the tank. After a month or so I started to see tiny green tuffs appearing in the tank on plants and wood, but at this point I didn't connect it to the moss ball. In time I ended up with algae covering most of the bogwood and when trying to remove it, I thought how much like a moss ball it was. That's when I realised what had happened. The moss ball is long gone but the algae has remained ever since and it's the only thing in my non co2 tank that pearls :(

My question is about ro water and re minerilizing it. You say to get it to 120tds. I do this but what about fertz. They raise the tds to about 200 plus. Is this normal? Or should I have fertz and minerals at a total of 120tds? I also watched your fert video that put me to sleep. Lol but you never mention if it's a total tds or 120tds plus fertz.

@gqwarrior6694
@gqwarrior6694 3 года назад
I'll respectfully disagree that lava rock isn't a good bacteria supporting media. It is far more efficient than ceramic rings, crushed ceramics of bio balls. I've used it in all of my canisters & on very heavily stocked tanks (I have over 40 tanks) & it works very, very well. The only issue you can have with it is that it will create a fair amount of sediment in the filter for the first couple of water changes. This won't last long though & does no harm to anything. Aquotix or Vebas (I'm Perth based myself) will be able to give you some good advice if you have any doubts.
@maluskakrecik
@maluskakrecik 3 года назад
Totally agree with everything said! One point that I didn't see mentioned which was the indirect cause for me: overfeeding. It's so easy to overfeed, and with good bottom cleaners(corys, shrimps, snails, etc) a lot of time it is not as visible as you'd think, but it does seep into the substrate... and the released amonia/nitrites cause the algae...
@GreenAquaShop
@GreenAquaShop 3 года назад
Yes, you are right, forgot to say that, but it's a bit connected to filtration too... Thanks for adding that!

Excellent video. Everytime I see Balazs talking about algae free tanks and temperature, I suffer. I live in a Brazilian city that is horribly hot. My tank is always around 29° even in some rainy days, no heater of course, and air conditioning really becomes something super expensive to pay every month (also, chillers cost way to high for me). I'm planning to have a new planted tank this year but I think I'll always have some kind of algae in the tank even though I have everything else a planted tank needs. Oh boy...

Hello and many thanks for all these excellent videos!! I am new in the hobby and i will try to copy one of your tanks. Probably the best channel for aquascapin g i found so far. Congrats! I have just one question. I would like to build a 60l tank with a betta fish + algea eater friends. In this video you seem to criticize tank heaters and treat them as a source of algae problems. The thing is that my house temp is around 20°c and I read minimum for exotic fishes like betta is 22°c and better 25°c. It means i must put a heater, does’nt it?

❤ Well, I'm completely out of the running for the algae pagent, LOL. I don't have a CO2 injector and it's just not a high tech planted tank. I still have a lot to learn about CO2 use, so its not my time to get one yet. Anyway, the very end was extremely hilarious! I wondered why your hair was looking like that and now I get the joke!!

Just getting in to Aquatic panted tanks. It is very fun. I love my big yellow snail. It eats so much algae. I have little tanks. 1.5 gallon planted with shrimp and snails. 5 gallon with plants and snails only. Your videos are great. Got bright lights and my plants are starting to grow. I am sort of a freak. I put in time everyday on my tanks.

Thank you Balazs. I will have to watch this carefully. My new 110 gallon tank came and it has a big sump filter that I'm still trying to figure out. But I will have co2 and the Fluval 3.0 LED and I will scape it heavily and with rocks and wood. It will have proper substrate and liquid fertilizer and tabs. I kept fish in the sixties and they had nothing like today. If I get tired of it, I'll find a big family and give it to them. Keep up the good work.

18:24 green dust or spot-like you said? Not trying to critique your awesome video; I ask because I randomly get algea that looks just like this at only one same small spot on the back of my glass which is weird but knowing the type will help. Also wondering with how you said the GSA looked nice on the wood and would leave it. Does this algae spread like by creeping or spores in the water? If we leave it are we more likely to get it on our precious anubias and buce leaves that are not on the wood? Finally if we get a decent amount of green dust on glass by scraping it and it getting all in the water require large WC for multiple straight days for it to not come back quickly or spread elsewhere? I’m not sure if it can reattach or spread after being scraped because I’m not sure how the propagation works. Is it better to use a pad and rinse it out in a bucket? Thanks and cheers on the vid. We all appreciate you !!

The worst of the lot is definitely BBA. So tough to remove, becoming impossible when it grows in surfaces that you can't readily scrape them off, e.g. suction cups for equipment, on the outlets of external filter return. BBA even grows on moss. When there isn't much, the 7 methods here can keep it at bay, but once there's a bunch of it, I think it's time to give up that tank.

Great video; the end is hysterical!!! I have two (non-algae) questions for you guys! 1). Do I have to do dry start with dwarf baby tears (H. callitrichiodes)? 2). I ordered plants from different suppliers. Some have arrived, but I’m still waiting on others. What should I do? If I start the tank now, and plant only the 5 that arrived, I’m afraid I’ll give algae the head start. If I wait for the remaining 20 to arrive (should be Tuesday), I’m afraid these 5 might die (4 are tissue culture, one is stem cuttings; the H. callitrichiodes hasn’t arrived yet). Thank you for your advice!!!!

RO/DI filter is probably the best investment for this hobby. I personally don't add anything to my water before adding it to the tank(to each their own, only sharing my experience). I dose the tank, not the water. A good RO/DI filter should get 0ppm 7.0pH water from almost any clear tap water source. When I lived in San Diego, CA, my RO/DI filter brought 350ppm 7.8pH tap water down to 0-1ppm 7.0pH. For top-offs, I add pure 0ppm water as nutrients don't evaporate. I learned this over 10 years of growing plants hydroponically as well as 15 years of keeping freshwater and reef aquariums. One can always add nutrients but one can't take them out unless one does a 100% water change or uses lots of activated carbon(more money, no thanks). If one wants to remove algae for good, remove its food source from the water column and it will die off really fast. This video was really cool, I like to keep saltwater algae. My favorite tanks of mine to look at are my saltwater refugiums which house lots of different saltwater algae as well as a multitude of micro-organisms.

Really nice Video! I have removed all Algae. Now I want to put some Algae eaters in there to help me a bit. In my normal Fish Tank I have got some Crossocheilus Reticulatus they are very huge. About 13cm. Can I put them in my 90p and how many? Do they eat my mosses and fine structure Plants? And i want to put crossocheilus oblongus in there do they eat my mosses /fine Plants and did Amano Shrimps eat those Plants also and how many I can put In that Tank from each? Ive gut 25 Neon tetra also in the Tank. Thanks ✌🏻
