Algebra, Geometry, and Topology: What's The Difference?

This Math-Dance video aims to describe how the fields of mathematics are different. Focusing on Algebra, Geometry, and Topology, we use dance to describe how each one of these fields would study a circle. The geometer dances with a rigid hula hoop, the topologist dances with a loop of fabric, and the algebraist dances with a circle of lasers.

1:57 - 2:15 i did NOT understand algebraic point of view at all 😅😅 - i was guessing it would have been more about different forms of algebraic equations representing a circle - but the mentioned description totally flew over my head. someone wanna shed a light?

@@yash1152 There is more than one algebra and more than one geometry. Each has it's own rules (axioms). According to the axioms, this describes the behavior of how the points connect together. I explain this to my students by relating it to rules in sports. If you play a sport like soccer, you have rules. If you remove or change rules, you may have something that looks like soccer on the surface, but the game plays differently. The players and refs have to behave differently to fit the modified rules.

0:45 Algebra, Geometry, Topology, Combinatorics, Analysis, Logic, Game Theory, Differential Equations, Number Theory 1:25 why topology aint even distant mentioned upto 12th standard?? My subjects were Phy Chem Maths - and of all other branches there's at least some mention somewhere - however small. But topology is never ever mentioned. (12th standard is called high school in other places i guess)

Sometimes some topology gets mentioned in computer science contexts, such as networking. Those topics aren't always common in primary and secondary schools though.

since "Mathematics is the art of giving the same name to different things", I would imagine that algebra, geometry, and topology are all the same

Mathematics has no field, humans are just trying to organise mathematics in this way. I believe in mathematics everything is interconnected, even though I am no expert, but sometime too much formalisation looks unnatural and artificial.
@sullivan3503
@sullivan3503 2 года назад
Formalization is what makes math so beautiful to me. The fact that I can describe code to simulate fluids in a few lines of formulas is amazing and wonderful, and it proves that we really understand something about the essence of how fluids behave.
@maths_nerd
@maths_nerd 6 месяцев назад
Formalisation is the primary thing in mathematics. Euclid's Elements are still studied and hold the same value even after 2000 years because it is well formalized.
