@@CactusFragz well, you take the 5 in the denominator over to the other side, and multiply that by 3 that makes 15. The take the 3 to the other side and subtract that from 15. That leaves us with 4x=12, take the 4 to the right and divide it by 12. 12÷4=3.

So this is the same, and I expect only, _way_ of working out the answer, just without rewriting the equation after each step. The reason they get you to do that in school is so if you make a mistake at one point they can see you still had the right idea and might be able to give you credit for that, as opposed to just having nothing but the wrong answer and no proof that you understand what to do, you just made a mistake.

Exactly how we were taught in the US we when I was in school. What nonsense did you learn down under?
@divahc1
@divahc1 2 года назад
None! I went to high school from '73 to '78 and this is EXACTLY how we did it. I don't know what he's talking about. Only difference is we did one step at a time, which is normal practice when learning something new. I teach maths now, and I still each it this way. We were taught that whatever you do to one side do the same to the other. So, to clear the division from the LHS, multiply both sides by 5, for example. Then, we'd write down that step. Once we had done that we'd do the next step. Writing out each step is good practice for learners as it keeps them focussed, gives them a written record of their working so they can find errors in their working if their final answer is incorrect. As teachers, marking exams, it gives us the opportunity to award marks for correct working, even if a calculation is slightly out. I don't know what he's talking about in this video, when he says 'lines and lines of messy working'. 🤷🏼‍♀️

An equation is a balanced number sentence. Think of it as a set of bucket scales. Whatever expression or number is in the left hand bucket must equal the same value as what is written in the right hand bucket, so the scales are balanced. So, if you had 5 apples of equal weight in each bucket and you took one out of one bucket, you'd need to take an apple out of the other bucket, right? Now, in algebra our aim is to have just the pronumeral in one bucket and a single numreal in the other bucket. To reduce the expression on the LHS to only the pronumeral we need to cancel out all the operations done to the pronumeral. We start by reversing the operation that is as far detached from the x as possible. In this case, the division by 5. To undo, or reverse divide by 5, we need to do the opposite. Think of it as untying knots in a rope. If a rope has knots in it, to return the rope to its original untied state, we need to untie the knots. To 'untie' the 'divide by 5', we do the opposite, so we multiply by 5. Because we are multiplying the LHS by 5, we need to do the same to the RHS.
