The UN representatives of Morocco and Algeria engaged in a dispute concerning the fate of Western Sahara, as Algeria called for a referendum while Morocco maintained its territorial claim over the region.
Designated as a "non-self-governing territory" by the United Nations, Western Sahara is predominantly under the control of Morocco, which proposes autonomy for the region while asserting its overarching authority. In contrast, Algeria has consistently backed the Polisario Front, an independence movement led by the indigenous Sahrawi population of the region.
The long-anticipated referendum has yet to materialise, and in late 2020, the Polisario declared a resumption of hostilities, marking the end of a protracted ceasefire
