Ali Farka Touré - Amandrai live at Segou Festival 

I am originally from Asia, never heard this brilliant artist before. Recently discovered him, he is one of the best.

Ali Ibrahim Toure is a one time in a century kind of artist. His works are marvelous. There isn't any bad music where Ali was there. His collaboration with Ry cooder and Toumani Diabate are some of the proofs. His albums Niafunke, Svane, Ali Farka Toure and The river ( not in any particular order) are at the top of the specimens of African music.

If you like Ali, you should check out his son Vieux Farka Toure. Very different both in musical approach and guitar technique. Much more African...works with traditional materials...but you can also see some incredible resemblances, not least of which is the utter and effortless command of the instrument.

But it is fascinating to hear it having returned to its old stomping ground. A West African musician can at the very least add an extra dimension to it.

I don't think anyone is denying that blues grew out of African music. But as a distinct form, it did in fact come together in the US, and European music is also an influence, if for no other reason than the Africans had to adapt their music to European instruments, which had a different set of intervals than the ones that came from Africa. Much of what makes the blues unique is the minor over major tension that resulted. Don't deny the invention of the Africans forced to come to America.

I was lucky enough to catch Ali play live in Boulder, CO. One of the most amazing shows I have ever seen. Gifted.

It's called 'ngoni' or 'xalam' and the player is Bassekou Kouyate, aka the Jimi Hendrix of the ngoni.
