The fact that he was singing in a sustainable way is what surprises me. Kurt Cobain had an incredibly powerful voice but dude would cough blood in order to achieve it. Layne could have kept singing for decades whereas Kurt probably would have been done shortly after their fourth album due to wear on his throat
@@cavemanzach9475 I have to clarify something: to sing like this, you really need to know how to use your voice, dont stress and dont overcompress. only that way you can achieve these kinda tones. Its naturally sustainable this way :)
@@cavemanzach9475 if only he had sobered up. We'd still have him and he'd still have his voice But say he didn't OD nor sobered up altogether, he wouldn't be this good (not counting natural aging)
I conquer. It took me till seeing this live performance a couple months ago to realize how hard it hits. Even though I use to hear this song all the time on the radio during the late 90's early 2000's. Don't no why that it took so long
Best grunge singer hands down, well to me anyway. Think there's way more to staleys vocals than the rest, and Cornell, cobain and veder aren't far behind him in all honesty.
Everyone talking about Layne's monster performance here--and it's definitely deserved praise, the man has no equal--but Cantrell is fucking so tight on guitar. Every time he plays, the song sounds just like the studio, it's insane. His proficiency as a singer and a live guitarist goes largely unnoticed only because Layne is such a fucking monster. Really puts into perspective how truly good Layne was as a singer.
Remember seeing them at the Salem Armory in 92. Pearl jam opened, Nirvana was the middle act, and the headliners were Alice in Chains. To this day, I have never been at a better concert. When Man in the Box started, whole place shook
I am SO freaking jealous! I was 13 when all these bands really broke out and become popular, and I was ENTHRALLED. It was a musical awakening for me. I've never looked back.
RIP the two members of Alice in Chains Mike Starr (April 4, 1966 - March 8, 2011), aged 44 Layne Staley (August 22, 1967 - April 5, 2002), aged 34 You both will be remembered as legends.
@@Onikag Depression and drugs made Layne extremely reclusive in his later life and he ended up dying alone in his apartment from an OD after having a disagreement with their Bassist Mike Starr. Mike had seen how bad Layne looked and wanted to call 911for an ambulance but Layne threatened to never speak to him again if he did, so Mike didnt know what to do. The last thing Layne said to anyone was to Mike and it was "dont leave, not like this" but Mike was also high on Benzos and left Layne at his apt alone. At this point Layne was pretty much dead from the abuse he put on his body, so It is not Mikes fault but he carried that guilt with him for years until he died of an OD as well in 2011. both of their stories are sad and tragic. RIP to both legends
Also Mike Starr, dude made a mistake to leave his friend alone which ultimately killed him and had to live with that till the day he went out the same way from deep depression. Alice in Chains shoulda been buried with them
3:39 The ferocity that Layne belts out the final chorus is unbelievable. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he shattered glass in that place. Most unreal live performance of all time. Everyone in that room had no idea they were witnessing history.
Perfectly said! I thought the same thing watching this, dude really reached back for that one! And Jerry gettin into it on the axe, don’t get much better
Please get an uncensored copy on tape whilst you're there!! That's the only thing that ruins this version, for me this is the best live version by some distance. And that says something, when you think how many amazing performances of this song exist!!
@@gaetzwarren8146that’s what came into my head right away, but still Alice In Chains is my second favorite behind Pantera, it’s just hard to compare them because they are both perfect for different moods
+Moffet's Solution If you go and write a song as simple as those, very likely it will be garbage.Anyone can write simple songs, but very few can make them awesome.
The scream at 3:21 makes this my favorite live version of this song aside from the one in Brazil where the entire crowd of thousands are singing the chorus. RIP LAYNE.
@@ryanwilliams4223 in terms of influence, i’d say nirvana was more beatles. in terms of musicianship, they were definitely sex pistols or something along those lines. chains was definitely sabbath mixed with pantera. i’d also say soundgarden was sabbath like. pearl jam definitely zep
It’s because these expressions of their talent come from dark places, eventually they are ran over. But the emotion that runs from that place, makes for astonishing music
Layne's voice was fucking incredible back then... I grew up in this era, but because Kurt and Nirvana had so much attention, and Pearl Jam were massive, when it came to classroom-debates about who had the best voice, alI I remember hearing was how great Eddie Vedder's voice was, and also Chris Cornell's voice... Kurt was mainly lauded for his songwriting, not really his voice... Bit like the Beattles, nobody ever really talks about how great John and Paul were as singers, just songwriters... Cannot believe how powerful Layne's voice is in this video. Incredible stuff
Paul Mccartney beats all the vocalists you've listed. If somebody doesn't give Paul credit for his vocal abilities it means this person doesn't know shit about singing :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FGmKoro5vGc.html
Man, he had some serious pipes. B flat he could just belt out and sustain on the chorus... it's actually incredible. Watch covers, nobody can do it the same. RIP Layne!!!
Dylan Padgett lol I know right Layne's getting me so pumped you can tell he Mike,Jerry and Sean were all belting every god damned bit of energy at this concert the amps and speakers and instruments etc can only do so much but you can tell when some 1 is giving all they fucking got and 90 to early 92 you can tell that these guys were just meditating all day for they're short amount of time on the stage and when ever they would go on the were like a super nova they where beautiful,on fire, loud and they simply caught everyone's attention that's the way true rock n roll should be and its a shame we don't have that anymore.
The way Mike Starr plays that bass….. damn…. He almost humping it. Totally sexy man. His bass playing is so badass and sounds so punchy. Love it and him! He looked like such a cool person to know. I’ve listened to many many interviews. Love him. RIP Mike & Layne
The Bible says faith in Jesus Christ and repentance are the ONLY way into the Kingdom of Heaven. John 14:6 Make sure you get you Judgement-Ready by repenting and accepting Jesus Christ. Acts 2:38-39
That little death metal growl he does or bark after the first line of the first and second verse are just bad ass. Wish it was on the record. Like most bands from the 90s they was way better live
+Daniel Malone I love those growls so much! Now I can barely listen to the studio version. Lol. I'm like where are laynes growls?!! This live version fucking rocks!!!
It warms my heart to know there's a few recorded live performances where you can see Layne at full power, before the drugs really took their toll. That section at 3:40 is another level - he might be the only one on it.
The combination of Laynes absolutely incredible vocals paired with Jerry’s insane guitarist abilities Is truly an amazing experience I wish I could have lived to see. It’s why AIC will forever be my all time favorite band. It’s extremely rare for a lead singers vocals to put me in a state of paralysis like Layne’s can. Truly a talented talented vocalist, the grunge era produced so many amazing vocalist it’s insane.
Shane Paterson Whoa Whoa Whoa matey'. Don't throw tomatoes to the man. He didn't mean ''soul music''. The nigga obviously said that they play ''with their souls'' when they perform live. No ''soul music'' of the 70s. Alternative metal with inches of doom, sludge, groove & funk but no soul.
The last chorus to man in the box live is always "bone chilling"when Layne sings it, but in this performance, i can't even describe the feeling i get every time i hear it. Definitely missed along highly UNDERRATED bassist Mike Starr, whose performance outside of his amazingly groovy bass riffs, provided the energy in the playing to me.
How Badass Mike was hereee ! Or The whole band ... such an Iconic band ... the One and Only Alice in Chains !! RIP MIKE AND LAYNE .. GOD BLESS JERRY AND SEAN
As a true AIC fan, I am almost in tears watching this nowadays. R.I.P Layne. I know Duvall is good, but he could never replace the vocals cords that you were given, it's as if they were made out of gold.
Even better than the studio cut. Mind blowing really. How Layne harmonized with the guitar and how he belts out the lyrics , Jerry's solo the grinding sinister rhythm section . The perfect heavy rock song. Unmatched by their fellow Seattle bands.
3:39 instant goosebumps. Never heard vocals carry an entire fuckin band until now. Incredible. Sounds almost better live. Hitting a combo of 4 high then 1 deep notes 15 times in one song, blows me away.
He probably would not be so damn good and emotion erupting, his pain was his power and inspiration. Still I would exchange music he gave me for his well being and happiness.
aha couldn't agree more,I've sadly had to grow up with the sad pathetic excuse they now like to call music... it's sad to think most the kids of my generation don't even know who these guys are,let alone anyone from the grunge/alternative scene. It sickens me to know that it can only get worse from here. I'm also pretty upset about the fact that I not only missed out on GOOD music by 20 years, but when my future children hear this they're gunna be like "shit, I didn't just miss out on seeing these guys, but mom did too" Kind of funny that when my Dad bought these CDs that 25 years later his daughter was going to steal them all.
Phenomenal. Easily one of the best live bands to ever exist when layne sang performed. Few singers have his range and ability to yell and tone it back down
