So glad to see how appreciated Laynes huge amount of work is nowadays. I remember the late 90s- early 2000s and all the media talked about was the drugs. Just like how dirty Rolling Stone did Layne, which I believe was his last interview ("The needle & the damage done" cover instead of the whole AIC band cover). Layne still has the best voice I have ever heard out of a White man, he's up there with soul singers like Sam Cooke & Little Stevie Wonder with them vocals.

I'm a 90's kid. I remember thinking that incredible rock and metal would be around forever because if you looked backwards it was and looking forward it felt like every week, every month there was some legendary band that would drop a timeless album. AIC was on my radar but there was just. so. much. music they got lost in the avalanche of Nirvana, Metallica, Soundgarden, GN'R, Pearl Jam, etc. I remember thinking, "I'll get into them later" I didn't until last year and I consider myself so lucky I slept on them because now I get to experience them fresh Thanks for interviews like this one. When I heard Alice were doing a new album after they got back together with William as their new vocalist, I just assumed they'd work with Toby again. The _Last Action Hero_ tracks, _Jar of Flies,_ the self-titled album, _Unplugged,_ and the two tracks for the box set, plus Jerry repeatedly spoke glowingly of him in the box set liner notes. Not sure why they didn't, I always thought Nick Raskulinecz was, like, the most over-the-top slick rock producer out there, but that's just me.

You posed the question to Toby that Jonathan Plum brought up about Layne's voice clipping. I think the song on JoF where it is happens frequently is Don't Follow. Thank you, Daniel for your phenomenal interview with AIC's producer, Toby Wright. It was both informative with new revelations & confirmative of "stories" that had floated around for years. Throughout your interview, I'd no sooner think of a follow-up question I'd love to have an answer to, & you were literally asking it. I thought this interview was incredibly respectful & non-intrusive of Mr. Wright's personal relationships with Layne & Jerry. And I believe your admiration, respect & love for AIC shone brightly throughout your conversation with Mr. Wright which led to entertaining stories from years so long ago. This is an interview that I'll come back to, time and again, hoping to pick up another nugget of information I might have mistakenly missed. Well done, Daniel.

Daniel, as a viewer, I really appreciated the calmness & even flow of words between you & Mr. Wright (if that makes any sense). You could tell he felt comfortable with the flow of the interview too. The cream rises to the top. Once these movements are said and done and we look back we can see the truth. Like with hair metal and butt rock, bands like Bon Jovi and Poison who sold millions at the time. Even Motley Crue to an extent. They drop a few spots and the truly great bands like Cinderella, Ratt and Twisted Sister can now be seen as the acts that were the true innovators with the truly timeless music. As with those bands so with Grunge. Nirvana are the Godheads. But Alice In Chains are a close second. Soundgarden hold position. And Stone Temple Pilot, whom I thought were sorta posers at the time, have ascended to the top ranks alongside the Seattle greats. Pearl Jam are the Bon Jovi of Grunge and, though great, are not as vital (no pun intended).

@@edwarddonegal9762 was Bon Jovi Metal? Or even glam metal? They looked the part. Had the same hair styles. Wore the same kind of “rock star” spandex. But were they metal? That’s my point. PJ have their moments. And they are a grunge band. The lite-rock side of grunge. “Alive” is a grunge anthem wether we like it or not. If anything it punched their ticket and made them grunge Gods. I’m not really a fan of PJ but you can’t talk Grunge’s greatest hits and not include “Alive”. Or that Temple of the Dog song about “goin’ hungry”. Whatever that song is called. I forget.

Layne;s music made me not to abuse substances - despite critics who say AiC glamorized drugs. I recall in an interview with Layne to regarding fans coming up to Layne saying they were high, and that was the opposite of what the music intended. What hurts most is not his passing. Instead what hurts is Layne becoming a recluse and his life of hell.

I don't know how you do it but every interview that I watch of yours is incredible. Great back story to songs or albums. By the way Metallica the reason why they got haircuts. One of the guys stated in a interview when they were on tour They kept getting stopped and searched etc. Go through a whole long process because they had long hair. Jason had short hair at times and was not harassed or stopped as much going through customs. Also the girls Jason was dating or Hooking up with were more Attractive. So the rest of the band got haircuts.

Get Born Again is one of my favorite from their catalog, it always invokes the season of Fall in my mind so whenever the days get shorter and the air gets colder, it's one of my go-to songs. Definitely sounds different in terms of the mix, it comes in very heavy and then sounds a bit lethargic and softer than usual for an AIC song. But I love the trailing vocal and guitar tones near the end, it just lacks the overall energy that I think many would associate with the group. I definitely don't hear it as being nu-metal influenced, but will have to relisten with that observation in mind. Fantastic interview, really appreciate the video!

It really wasn’t heroin that Layne was into after the dirt era. I think your junkie prejudice/bigotry is probably wrong because he was more reliable when it was just dope. He got into crack, which stopped everything, stopped the tours, and he started getting flakey.

This was really awesome information. Thank you for this great interview, Daniel. I had no idea of the individual creative aspects that Jerry and Layne contributed to the music. To how Layne worked the mic, for example, to create his sound. Or the fact that they both knew how they each wanted a song to play out, from the beginning which Toby had to consider in the end result. Their harmonizing, etc. Very interesting also to hear that working with Alice in Chains was the most amazing experience for Toby. Since he had many. He had to learn how they each thought or created to be able to produce the songs that became great. Along with the great contributions by Sean and Mike, of course. The whole process must've been fascinating to be involved in live. It did make the demise and loss of Layne even more sad, however. They were such a great band, there was no telling all they could have done. Thankful for what we have is the only way I can look at it.

I think Layne trusted Tobby first because he wouldn't intervene in his personal life and complained all the time about his drug use like the other members of the band did and it's so hard for a producer to work with a H addict cos he's gonna waste lot of time repeating and correcting mistakes that could be barely done by non addict people.

From the artistical and documentary point of view, this is a great interview, and Daniel is always on point with his questions. However I'm a little bit tired of hearing these people who call themselves Layne's "best friend", or claim things like "I was the only only he really trusted", "he was like a brother to me", and such BS. I mean, if they cared so much, why on earth he was found after 2 weeks he had passed? In the case of this gentleman in particular, if he was really on his way to record something with Layne, hadn't it been reasonable (especially knowing how poorly Layne was doing and the fragility of his condition) to confirm it a couple days earlier just to make sure everything was OK instead of boarding a plane without speaking to him for two weeks? Seriously, even when I don't question mr Wright's profesionalism, that story sounds positively off.
