I want to give Toby a big shoutout for how he treated me when my little band cut a 3-song demo with him almost 20 years ago. I was young and very unprepared for recording in a big-leagues studio (Glenwood Place), and it was embarrassingly obvious. Toby found the right balance of encouragement, humor, and tough love. At the end of the project he told me some things to work on as a drummer until we met again, and I worked my ass off on them. It paid off. To him I was just a kid he may or may not see ever again, but to me he was a legend. And he motivated me to become the drummer I could be! If you spend time with him, he’s just a funny dude with a good laugh! But man, he knows his stuff as an engineer, a producer, and even psychologist! Awesome human.

…Also, he could have just hired someone to come in and replace me, but he didn’t. I was really grateful for that. I felt like I owed it to him to reach another level.

That’s cool. I got to work with him and he was just as you describe. Very specific on how he wanted things setup but it taught me a lot.

A deep dive into the recording of Divine Intervention would be amazing. The mix is so unusual but functions so good. Thick drums, roaring guitars, and a strange depth to the roomsound. Love to learn about that albums proces 👍👍

Wow, What a legend. Oysterhead and Primus really defined me as an open-minded musician (them and Mr Bungle) but know the man behind the productions of these incredible engaging and fun records is wonderful. Not to mention listening to Follow The Leader on the school bus every day of high school and sharing that with the rest of the folks!

Warren, Thank you SO much for the incredible people you interview for us. I really like that you focus on some of the engineers who may be less known and "flashy" today but did fundamental records back in the 80's and 90's. I'am still in awe for the "Jagged Little Pill" retrospective. Any chance you may be interviewing Dave Fortman (Evanescence, Godsmack, Mudvayne, Slipknot) for us in the future? So cool! Primus ANTIPOP is a perfect (n’ super underrated) record, imo. And the record sounds frickin’ amazing, the title song is what I always used to tune a PA/room. And duder did Oysterhead, amazingness!!

I saw Sevendust live when they were promoting Home and they opened for Metallica! It was awesome, the guitarists were jumping around on mini trampolines while they were playing!

His records have this warm thick fuzzy sound to them that's pretty original. Korn's Issues and Sevendust's Home in particular. Those albums don't sound like anything else in those discographies.

What's a camper and why does it sound digital to him!?

A Kemper is a digital amp profiler.

I think he means "Kemper". Google it, it is amp head. All digital, but you can record any amp freq response. Say your friend has ac30 amp, he borrows it to you. You "download" it to Kemper and now you have it. Next to 200 other amps. In theory shoud sound the same. What he means is that in essence it is digital, and digital sounds digital still.

I’m with him. Not a fan of how they sound. Good for a bedroom player but I don’t think they sound good enough to use in the studio or live. They always sound hollow, harsh and soulless live - mixed so many bands that use them.

I'm sorry but I have to say it, I cannot stand the recording of Divine Intervention. Terrible to the point of being irritating. Korn Follow the Leader was amazing, so I'm wondering how did you screw that album up so bad?
