A tour of my huge Alice in Wonderland bookshelf, featuring over 40 of my favourite Alice editions (links below) - all have different but incredible illustrators, and they are arranged chronologically so you can see how representations of Alice have changed dramatically over the past 150 years!
I hope you enjoy this "illustrated tour", which actually goes inside each of the books, and that maybe you find something new to you in my collection. Please, please do share your favourite edition - either from my collection, or your own - I'm always keen to learn which appeals to people and why, and Alice just has so many different (and wonderful) interpretations.

Quite a few I hadn't seen before! Love the way so many artists have added to the Alice story. A fabulous comprehensive video again. You really add a lot to it with your knowledge of the illustrators. Hard to pick a favourite!

You are welcome! :) Yes, indeed. I'm just in love with your editions! I recently bought a version by Ángel Domínguez (he illustrated both books, but each in a very different style with two different Alices basically and including the lost "A Wasp In A Wig" chapter), which I personally like very much. 💖

Yes, I like it when Alice is brunette too :) Although interestingly, when the author first asked Tenniel to draw Alice for him, he recommended two models for Alice, both of whom were blonde. Tenniel refused to use the models, but obviously the hair colour stuck 😂 I’d love to know which edition you decide on...

BookCravings Ah, I love Alice - she has inspired so many of the most talented illustrators! (And I can assure you that your videos are also considerably damaging to my wallet 😂) But she is just so addictive - I had no idea quite how many different editions I had until I started pulling them all out to make the video (😬 no wonder I have no shelf space)...

Wow, what an incredible collection! So many different and beautiful interpretations. I thought the Australian edition putting the story in an Aboriginal context is a very neat concept. As a fan of Anne Bachelier's work I was embarrassingly unaware of her Alice rendition, but how beautiful, I love it. Also really liked the Iassen Ghiuselev book, how fun to have the single illustrations be actually a part of a whole image. I have the feeling that I'll be coming back to this amazing video tour in the future for reference, as my resolve to stick to only one Alice edition crumbles, haha. Wonderful video!

Hi I want to mention that this Alice book by Iassen Ghiuselev is actually made in my country,Bulgaria!He also illustrated Alice Through the looking glass (which is with a big painting,too) and Pinocchio and Don Quixote

As my collection has grown, it has been impossible to have favourites... 😉 I only collect Alice books, I am not a general book collector, though I of course buy other books, novels, books on gardening and many other themes that I am interested in... I started to collect Alice books because I fell absolutly in love with the text in Wonderland, so started to collect different editions, but also books about Lewis Carroll, and about "the real Alice". Then included abrigded versions of Wonderland and Looking Glass, then included collectables, then included Disney's Alice... I get more response to posts on collectables, than on posts about books... 😭 And more response to Disney collectables than other collectables... 🙃 Are you on Instagram ?

Beautiful Books i have the pop up one which is crazy. But based on your reviews i have made a list of 10 must-have-right-now. On the top of the list is the Iassen Ghiuselev, and Rebecca d’Outremer. But also Ingpen and Weevers and Rackham.

Thank you so much for this engaging and formative video. I loved it and you have inspired me to buy even more editions of ‘Alice’. My favourite editions must be the Arthur Rackham and Peter Weevers. Have you seen the Charles Santore, Anthony Browne and Nick Hewetson editions? Those are other favourites of mine - especially the Charles Santore. I also think the Purcell Colour Classics Alice is stunning and is the first edition I had as a child. Thank you again for a brilliant video.

Hi! I recently found your site and your channel through your Alice posts and you do such an incredible job compiling beautiful images to go with the best, succinct information that does justice to the beautiful books you're referencing. I'm in awe of all the work it must take and I've been searching for someone who provides the kind of content you do! You have that avid collector's hunger but with an eye for beauty and taste! I did have a question about one of the books in the opening shots of this video, around 0:08 -- the book with the black spine that just reads Alice - Alice. It's so stark and striking! Do you have any information about this copy? Thanks again for the beautiful work you do!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a thoughtful and kind comment 💕 The edition you mention is the Anne Bachelier limited edition (you can see the illustrations at 15:40) - it's really beautiful. The LE is out of print (you can look for copies here, but they are rather expensive now: bit.ly/AliceBachelier) but the CFM Gallery brought out a cloth bound edition as well which might still be in print (try here: www.cfmgallery.com/alice.html). I actually used to have it. It was a small paperback edition, retitled "Alice For the Very Young," but the text and illustrations (down to the typesetting and everything) were exactly the same. I read it all the time when I was a kid. Unfortunately, it got severely water-damaged when my family moved, stained and moldy, and had to be thrown out.

I keep coming back to watch this video! Do you continue to collect, or are you satisfied with the copies you have? I think an addition that you could definitely look into is the one illustrated by David Delamare. You can find it on David’s website.

bheartsbooks thanks, that’s lovely of you to say 💕 yes, I still collect Alices (I might do a video update some day if people are interested), although I do limit myself to editions that I think are rather special in some way, not just for the sake of collecting more. David’s edition is very beautiful - thanks for sharing the links - and I’d love to add it to my collection! However, shipping to Oz is around $70 on top of the book, so it will stay in the wishlist right now... I get most of my Alices second hand, but I did buy MinaLima’s interactive edition recently (love it), and am really looking forward to seeing Chris Riddell’s later this year.

I need to get both the Folio Society Limited Editions of Alice. The Complete Alice is a wonderful edition but it does not compare to the splendour of the limited editions(quite predictably). Also, would you happen to know if the Benjamin Lacombe illustrated edition has been dropped entirely or if it's still in hiatus? P.S. I apologise for my crass alias but I refuse to change it since I find it works well for a place like YT.

The English Lacombe edition is on "indefinite hiatus" - which is not very promising. I had it on preorder for about three years but I finally cancelled it last month. But I do know there is a "fine" edition of the gorgeous van Sandwyk Folio Alice in the final stages of production, which will hopefully put his artwork for this within closer financial reach if you can wait a little longer... 😁

@@siddhantshrivastav Ah, it's not available for pre-order yet - Folio Society release their book lists 4 times a year and I don't know which list it will be in. If you're on their mailing list they'll announce it there, or I can let you know here if you're not.

Can any of you Alice obsessed experts please help me identify the ISBN # for this Alice In Wonderland book here in this video??? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YIxt7O6wca0.html Forward to 23:55 It has a burgundy red illustrated cover with gold lettering. It's a large format book, illustrated in color throughout. The text pages are framed with gold around the perimeter of each page. The illustrations are not by John Tenniel. It's an entirely different illustrator. I think the video may be from around 1990? That's all I know. I would love to get a copy. Anyone ever seen this copy of Alice in Wonderland before? Thought I would post this here, just in case.

Sorry for taking so long answering your query - when I first clicked on the link and checked the timestamp I couldn't see any version of Alice and I clicked off, but I just happened to try it again today and I realised that the book comes up later on in the video. I don't know if you'll ever come back here to check, but the edition in the video you are asking about is illustrated by Greg Hildebrandt. Oooh, fun question. Hard to answer without knowing a little more about what you are looking for, but a few interesting editions I’d suggest looking at are: the Kinuko Craft picture books, which is one of my favorite illustrated versions (she has several fairy tale picture books, her illustrations are all lush, see amzn.to/3aY5So9), the animated classics edition is fascinating if you like the Disney version of the tale (see amzn.to/3aSJPit), Reinhart’s pop-up edition is stunning but unfortunately I think could be out of print at the moment (amzn.to/3qayLDD), but the mirtalipova die-cut is also amazing (I’m going to feature that in a video soon, see amzn.to/374NIzJ) there are also a few editions with Arthur Rackham’s silhouettes that are quite classic... if you want the original (quite gory) text, then you are likely better off looking for the story in a compilation (I can suggest some of those too, but let me know if the other ones I’ve listed are what you had in mind!) 💕

Oh my goodness! I thought I had my little obsession under control. I have all the classy, current and readily available copies; The complete Alice, Annotated Alice, R.Sabuda pop up, the Flametree edition, Dali edition, 2 x Barnes&Noble versions, R.Ingpen editions (unabridged for me and abridged for my son), Chris Riddell's, Charles Santore's, Disney Graphic novel, "What would Alice do?" children's bath classics, Usborne Illustrated Originals, and a few other versions). I thought I was doing well and had a comprehensive and classy collection...how wrong i was. I am now looking for Anne Bachelier, Rodney Matthews, Rene Cloke and Zdenko Basic. I really must stop there...please no more additions to this video. I assume Benjamin Lacombe is still not in English? The illustrations look purely delightful. The Folio Society edition seems hard to get here in Australia without spending too much. May I ask you some questions; I am getting mixed information about Anne Bachelier, was there only 600 copies or was it 600 signed copies and another 1,000 unsigned but same book? Lastly, aside from the books I mentioned above, are there other books you would strongly encourage me to look at to have a broad, eclectic and classy collection? I prefer hardcover unless a paperback is an absolute must. Sincere thank you for taking the time to make this video. Your knowledge of all the prints is outstanding. Regards, Ben

Hi Ben - so lovely to hear from another Alice collector, and you have some of the most beautiful editions listed there 💕For your questions, there are some different editions of the Anne Bachelier - the one I have is the leatherbound limited edition, and the other copies are the same contents but a different binding. Benjamin Lacombe is sadly still not in English because it really is an amazing edition. I do have some more additions to the video and should do an update some time, but I definitely suggest checking out the Floor Reider edition (currently on sale at amazon!: amzn.to/3iYJxf8) and the Calla Editions version with illustrations by Harry Rountree is really nicely done. MinaLima's edition is also excellent if you don't have that yet. The MnaLima is both unique and beautiful but, alas, I fear I will be plagued with angst for not having the rest of her collection, oh the frustration I suffer for wanting complete collections of everything!! I have subscribed to the Folio Society mailing list and hope the money I foresee spending here is equally rewarded through a stimulation of my children's imaginations and learning.
