Greetings book-lover, and welcome to my channel! I make videos about beautiful books and I hope that you find some here that move your heart as they move mine. I review volumes that are simply beautiful because they were created with love and attention to detail but won't break the bank, as well as fine editions put out by publishers such as Folio Society and Easton Press, intricate pop-up books, and more. Nb: some links I provide are affiliate links for which I may be compensated.
Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments - I loooooove talking about books and will be thrilled to chat with you ㋛

I'm looking for books about stone age civilizations. Specifically finno ugric. Some book suggestions on finnish folklore and mythology would be nice too if anybody could lend a suggestion. Illustrations would be a huge boon since I'm a 3d artist and I need the reference images.

Was this book really $100+ when it first came out or that just the result of subsequent price-gougers exercising their greed? Whatever the reason, it is currently vastly overpriced.
The book was first released through Kickstarter for $89 plus s&h. It’s now $185 from the publisher direct. It’s really well made but yeah, that’s a lot! It’s basically selling in fine press territory.
This is an amazing publisher with original and very well crafted products. The size and the weight of the books are just perfect and they resemble those of the past. I’ve been in contact with a few of these in the last months and they truly are very tempting. I think I will get all of the Jane Austens because the flower motives are beautiful. However, the one thing that doesn’t quite appeal to me is the gloss of the paper. Some intermediate material between regular paper and glossy would be ideal, but then again you can’t please everyone. Well done, Chiltern!
Hi! I shared photos of all the books, including the ones not in the video, in the accompanying article here: beautifulbooks.info/2018/03/folio-societys-cherished-tales-series-of-limited-editions/
I saw an ad for this book, and now im doing some quick research on it. It looks like a book I'd enjoy, but the lack in descriptions has me thinking maybe its not the book im looking for exactly. I'm looking for one like this with a thousand pages and step by step descriptions. That's the book I'd pay for at that price. Also, i do love art, but I agree that it's a missed opportunity. It just looks like its lacking information.
No, I wasn’t able to get a response. But interestingly, they updated their website text and advertising material to remove the reference to it being a “limited edition”…
Maybe I'm just old and stuck in my ways, but I can't deal with those comic book covers lol. Some of the other ones have some nice artwork and a fresh take I can appreciate.
I hope you will have an update for the prospected August 6th and October 29th releases and the titles. I reach out to the company and beg to be on a list so I can pro-order and own every book and it's only through continually trying to see if they pop up that they are going to have releases. It's like pulling teeth to get this company to make sure I can own every book they put out for this series. Does anyone know how to get on a notification list. Or how can I keep up to date? Please and thank you to anyone who can help with this because because have begged the company for years and they don't seem to give a shit if anyone knows. Their FB is almost never updated and the only thing they post about is years old titles. Even their own store doesn't have thelre-order new releases and titles available. I'm just stuck fumbling around for it and have only found 19 titles available and have already paid for them.
Yes, it's so hard to track down their publication schedule! I do maintain a regularly updated list that includes the planned August and October releases (I like to make use of the preorder discounts - they started off really affordable, but prices have been steadily creeping up), you can see the list here: bit.ly/chilternbooks
Hi beautiful and the letters look as if the characters really look real ,makes them & the characters more real ,hope add them to my collection ,thanks for sharing ,
Thanks for the feedback - yes, YT does make adding out of copyright music much harder than it should be, unscrupulous companies constantly copyright claim classical music that has been placed in the public domain :(
What is the meaning behind the recurring symbol? Starting on page 25 it's one of the soap molds it's beneath the paw and penguin molds it repeats itself almost in every chapter. I would love to know
It's again on page 89. it's on one of the pots under water just on the left bottle corner. And again on page 104 on the bottle on the bottom left corner again. Then again on page 115 in a glass bubble. Then page 121 on top of the spinning wheel. Again on page 125 on The Brimstone .pg 131 on the grave cross. And it keeps going on and on what dose the symbol mean?
To me, it looks like a bit like a stylised scarab beetle. Apparently there is a hidden “quest” in the book (there was a prize that Kickstarter backers hunted for - the treasure was found already), so it’s also possible the recurring symbol relates to that?
Many of the covers are certainly beautiful. The paper quality/style gives me great pause though... Does not seem like it would be too enjoyable to read. IMO matte cream colour pages are best. It also has been difficult to find the translators used (when applicable). I was looking at their Phantom of the Opera but couldn't dig up anything.
Thanks for commenting! I don’t mind the paper when reading, but it’s definitely a bit glossy if you want to annotate with a pencil, for example. I’m travelling right now, but can check the translator for you when I get back if you like, as I have the book at home?
@@BeautifulBooks that would be nice if you could :) I left a comment on one of their Social Media pages but who knows if I'll hear back. I fully expect it to be the original abridged translation to keep costs down, but it would be nice to know for sure :)
Mid price was around $50 direct from Folio, but it was still a membership club back then, and you typically got free books when you joined - it is kind of complicated to work out exactly what you paid because you have to take that into account too. And they were printed over many years so later volumes went up in price too…
@@BeautifulBooks Ok, that's interesting. Appreciate you taking the time to respond :) Some are still fairly priced at the moment but I was shocked seeing people pay £140-200 for the Irish, Russia and Rome books. I got off easy it seems (£60, £70, £100). Have you seen any signs that they might reprint some of them? I'm not very impressed with their current direction. (Marvel, Bond, ect) Thanks for the great videos 👍
@@odond36 I haven’t seen anything about these being reprinted, but Folio seem to be experimenting with lots of different genres and binding designs lately!
These are my favorite! I have a copy of Gravity's Rainbow, East of Eden, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle from this series. I love the deckled edges!
I was ignorant about Ian Robertson. The aesthetic "look" of his covers made me think they were part of Adams' oeuvre. Indeed, a few of them are just as iconic in my humble opinions [e.g., the exquisite orange hues of "The Labours of Hercules"]
I recognize some of the artwork from when I was a child. I don't think we had a whole collection but I remember the blue book and maybe the green book.
I have a few of these including a sizeable black spine Penguin Classics collection. Now I'm going down the rabbit hole for all of the other beautiful editions. Thanks for a wonderful video!
Nice one! Are you a fan of business and productivity literature? If the answer is yes, I extend an invitation to explore my channel, where I provide animated reviews of books in these genres. I believe you'll find them both enlightening and captivating!
