The United States has a higher military budget than the next 25 countries in the list combined, from which almost all of them are allies. And yet, there are entire tent villages of homeless people in the middle of Los Angeles. What you described is basically a medieval version of today's problems.
Especially when it's no secret that Helaena is, well, delicate. They all look down at her for it. And now they decide to parade it about when it suits them even while she's sick with grief.
@NtoTheM What are you talking about? "They would move him at some point" Yeah he would have been taken to the dragon pit to be cremated in the Targaryen tradition, not paraded through the streets with his little sewn on head.
Back then it was considered unsightly for men to display emotions in public as it was seen as a weakness. Since Aegon is an absolute mess, they didn't want the people to see their King in such a state as it could weaken their efforts to defeat the Blacks. Crying and mourning was 'the woman's domain'. Through the women's tears, the people could see how much the royal family was devastated. Yeah it sure is a s*itty thing to do, but that's the way things were.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirlIt is still considered unsightly for men to display emotions in public. And I can't really take the responsibility to say that's a bad thing.
@@_antillas8674It’s a bad thing to supress emotions, good or bad. Gender has nothing to do with it. Sometimes, it’s good to cry. If not, pent-up emotions can harm your body or eventually can turn you into someone emotionally unstable and unnecessarily aggressive. PD: I am a psychologist.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849Yeah, if Inwas her I would be worried any one of those people might hurt me. Or if the body did fall into the mud, what would they do to it?
That's what I don't understand: why do they love her if she practically doesn't do anything? I hope that the TV show gives some explanation, otherwise one would believe that the riots against Rhaenyra were prepared by Larys and Helaena was just the excuse.
@@michelm5072That's partially why they love her, she doesn't do anything. She's just a beautiful girl who does nothing to hurt anyone. And in this case, plenty of people in KL have lost children, they know her grief and can sympathize with her.
Being on the autistic spectrum, I could immediately recognize her sensorial overload from the very moment she looked up to the smallfolk on the stone bridge. The grief and trauma following the assassination, the smallfolk cursing her sister-in-law and half-sister, the carriage getting stuck at the worst possible moment, and the crowd trying to touch her. That was so relatable.
George has a way of grounding his stories with stuff like that. He doesn't outright say she's on the spectrum but it's been basically her described behavior is that if someone on the spectrum. Brilliant writing. I've seen this suggested multiple places with pretty convincing evidence.
Oh absolutely, I'm autistic too and I could see it coming; she was about to short-circuit. And kudos to the showrunners for being able to portray that so well. Alot of neurotypical people just do not understand why that can happen.
I think the close up to her face looking up to the smallfolk in terror is alluding to a vision she was having at that moment. Maybe she was seeing ashes in the sky.
It’s sad bc the crowd is trying to be supportive but caused Helena panic attack. It shows that sometimes a good action can result in a negative outcome.
Haelaena out of all the people i feel really bad for. Aegon too. Aegon is nowhere near innocent like Haelaena is but remember he did not want the throne. Haelaena doesn't want anything to do with politics either. Two people with no desire for the throne, forced into it and it cost them their son.
the fact that his head bounces more than the rest of his body is such a gruesome detail. Of course it would happen as it's not attached to the body and it's much lower mass It makes sense, and it looks incredibly gruesome, incredible attention to detail
I think Helaena is displaying her neurodivergence here. Hates being approached and touched by people especially when she doesn’t know them. And looks like she’s going through sensory overload
@@cgt9056 don’t paint me as the kind of person who is indifferent and lacks understanding and wishes only to label people. I am trying to understand others who are different from me, and make sense of how certain groups of people act and behave differently. You have no idea who I am, so don’t judge me based on my attempt to make sense of characters who are after all fictional representations.
Can be, OR it can be a panic attack (looks more like it tbh), OR this can be her effect of her trauma OR something else OR all of that. I have clinical depression and when it gets REALLY bad I can also have a sort of ''sensory overload'' if I'm outside when even environment itself seems like it's pushing on me... So it can be anything or just visual representation of her being both ''special'' AND traumatized or wanting to be left alone with her grief. Maybe showrunners didn't even put much thought into it and didn't really want to ''represent'' any disorder or group of people at all.
I think they make it pretty clear that she’s got some neurodivergence going on, and I think that also adds to the humiliation of the situation. She’s both in grief and disabled, so she’s twice as vulnerable. Which makes her being pushed out to be a spectacle by her family so disgusting; that she was not spared from this act but her brother/husband was (because he was male). Her discomfort in this situation is probably being read as grief by the crowd, but we as the audience knows theres something else going on. The greens are exploiting her. Shes a tragic character; special needs, misunderstood, and is cornered because of her gender and title to “perform”. She wasn’t written this way in the books, but I think its a loving and interesting change by the writers. Fabulous actress too.
I truly believe that Heleana Targaryen was a mild functioning autistic person as well as a prophet. It is just her mannerisms and her inability to handle social interactions or even her emotions. Phia does such an amazing job with this character.
Anyone who knows the signs or behavioral characteristics of a person with a form of Autism can clearly see them interwoven into Phia Saban’s depiction of Helaena. Sensitivity to normal stimuli, avoiding eye contact, discomfort with being touched, fixated interest or knowledge of specific and narrow topics (in her case, insects and arachnids), etc. Helaena has demonstrated all of these and more. It’s a clever and poignant move to code Helaena’s status as a prophetic “Dragon Dreamer” via the recognizable tropes of neurodivergence like Autism. It explains the struggles she experiences and the misunderstanding people from the past (and present) have in relating to her.
As terrible as it was for Helaena i cried when the townsfolk wept for her and reached tueir hands out to her. They showed her more compassion than her own mother and family!
@lise7538 In the books, Helaena was very beloved in the eyes of the smallfolk. So were her children. So when the Blood and Cheese incident, along with book Helaena's actions that resulted from it, the smallfolk absolutely hated Rhaenyra.
Oh my poor Helaena. She is the sweetest and she suffered so much. And to think that they made her parade her poor son’s body to use it as a political tool. Just horrible. Look like they constantly repeated attacking rhaenyra while they were parading poor jaehaerys’ body. Not to mention that it was Daemon and not rhaenyra but that’s another story. Helaena was the most innocent of all and she had to suffer so much. She and her children deserved better
My partner is autistic and I've seen sensory overloads. Phia absolutely nailed it here. She tries so hard to hold it together, like she did when getting Jaehaera to safety. The most underrated actor in the show.
When she looks up at the confetti falling, it looks exactly like ash and it sets her panic attack off. She’s actually having a vision of Kings Landing burning because of Dany
In my experience, this scene perfectly portrays what it feels like to have a panic attack. All I want to do is yell, run in circles, and cry. However, I must hide my feelings for fear of causing a scene. In that context, even if a friend tries to support me with a hug or by holding my hand, it feels extremely uncomfortable.
omg I’ve been searching for this scene in RU-vid for a while thanks for uploading. This scene is really well shot! the cinematography, music, acting… everything was so chilling. my fav scene in season 2 so far!
I get wanting revenge. A son for a son. But Luke was a 14 yr old dragon rider. Jaehaerys was what, 6 yrs old? Beheading a 6 yr old after making his mother choose a child to die? Worse in the books where Alicent was forced to watch too? Then making Helaena do this for the political advantage? This whole thing is messed up.
Daemon hired a lunatic to kill Aemond and said "If you can't get him, get another one of the bastards" Did not have the foresight to see that the lunatic would find an infant.
2:25 this part is so well done. This whole scene is so dreadful and eerie but also so beautiful how the people mourn with Helaena. One of my favourite scenes in the new season.
I feel like people aren't understanding why the Hightower's asked Helaena to do this. If they can rally the whole kingdom to their side, they can avoid a prolonged battle of attrition that deprives millions of mothers. It's Machiavellan, but that was also what Machiavelli wanted to avoid when he wrote The Prince.
I wish we had more screrntime with Phia. She's absolutely amazing as Helaena and brings so much depth to the character that the book really glasses over. I love that she's ambiguous in the Dance..a very sympathetic player.
I find it interesting that people are acting like the procession is purely political. They’re royalty. It’s what they do. They did the same for Aemma and Baelon before they were burned by Syrax. I wish we got to see Dreamfyre.
Casual show watchers of house of the dragon treat the show like a wattpad fabrication. They wouldn’t handle the complexity of the main series asoiaf if this is how the react 😭💀
Aemma and Baelon's bodies weren't paraded around KL in front of their freshly-grieving loved ones to garner sympathy in order to help win a nasty war. Logic invalid.
I think the small folk on the bridge and the connfetti that looks like ashes, is her seeing a vision of the small folk mob attack that kills that last of the dragons in the pit
the ashes she sees is the way the "dance" will end...she saw it all...she knew all will end in loss....like the wind spreading the once big House into oblivion....
That’s hasn’t happened yet it might be the next episode or after where they all start shouting Queen rhaeynera and they cause a uproar going after Alicent.
@@RockyAexiiy yeah But also “they started it” is such a childish argument to put blame solely on a single entity Otto started this bs, he is the orchestrator, but he isn’t the only one to blame. Otto did not cause the murder of the boy, Daemon did.
1) Her baby boy was just killed in front of her. And she's being forced to parade his body and herself through the streets for propaganda. Poor woman just wants to be left alone to grieve. 2) She's paranoid someone in the crowd is another assassin and might try to attack her and her mother. Would you be so eager to have people touch you after witnessing a loved one get decapitated? 3) She doesn't like being touched in general, but now it's going into overdrive mode because of the crowd. It's implied she is autistic, and a known feature for autistic people is they don't like to be touched or be in crowds. 4) It's also implied she was having a vision during the procession; possibly the fall of House Targaryen. Frankly, it's a miracle the poor woman didn't faint.
To those of you who don’t know the gold cloaks stayed loyal to the blacks because of daemon. They were the ones who let the blacks retake kings landing
I felt so bad for helaena in this scene but if they had the death of her son follow actual writing of the books this scene wouldve had an even bigger affect
They legally couldn't copy the book regarding blood and cheese to the letter. Since they were working with 4 year olds, they had to tone down the scene so as to not scare them. Sorry but it's an actual law.
Damn shame how Helaena goes out. If I recall, she jumped into the spiked moat of maegor’s holdfast. I believe aegon III’s wife died the same way, but it’s believed she was thrown.
They should've casted an older actress to play Alicent in the time skip because Olivia Cooke is 30 and Phia Saban is 25 so they look ridiculous playing mother and daughter when they are just 5 years apart! They look like friends or sisters
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl yes but the actress themselves are only 5 years apart and they should’ve aged Olivia Cooke like they’ve done to Rebecca from This is Us
