I feel so bad for Haelena. She just had to make the painful decision of letting her son die so that she and her daughter could escape. And the entire time she's running away, trying not to panic so that the girl wouldn't start screaming and risk getting them killed too. She couldn't see anyone and the worst part is? I think Haelena is only 19 or 20; practically a child herself. And she goes straight to her mother because she is so young herself. And just like how she's trying to shield her own daughter, Haelena goes to Alicent to get a sense of comfort and protection because she knows the assassin's wouldn't be stupid enough to follow her to Alicents quarters.

The guards not being there actually makes sense since Crinston would have likely dismissed them or purposefully created a gap in their rotation to give him an opportunity to sleep with Alicent and not get caught. That would also explain how Blood and Cheese manage to sneak into the queen's bed chambers without getting caught. Now whether or not Crinston and Alicent would sleep together at all, or during the middle of the war is up for debate.

people are being way to harsh towards helaena for "not reacting"...in hotd shes clearly depicted as neurodivergent/autistic (averse to physical touch, reluctance to look into peoples eyes, special interest in arthropods, difficulties reading social cues) and her responses to trauma are also a sign of that. when vaemond gets killed her reaction is to cover her ears and turn away. shes clearly very, very distraught here, at 1:27 you can see her expression shift from fear to horror as she's forced to make a decision. her eyes at 2:11 are heartbreaking, phia is simply incredible here. her seemingly "lack of reaction" is just because shes in complete shock and doesn't know how to handle it. shes fully dissociating by the time she reaches her mothers chambers. and hell, shes still a kid...

As an asperger, I agree with you. The actress did a fantastic job portraying a possible autistic condition. The dissociation makes total sense and can in fact be worse than screaming your lungs out, because crying means you're processing the pain, dissociating means you still haven't registered it and will cause even more pain when it does.

I don't even think she was reallg dissociating. I think she was just trying to hold it in because she knew she had to stay somewhat level headed for her remaining baby. Okey for those judging poor Heleane’s reaction to her child’s murder, let me break it down. Heleane both in the show and books is described a loving mother who loves her children and tried to protect them, in the book she begged for the Killers to take her and not her children while this shows she tries selling her priceless necklace. As for her body language, she actively trying to resist and her eyes are watering. In the Show it’s hinted, that she is a Seer of sorts and knew she couldn’t stop the incoming events such as sewing a blanket for her son, gazing at his bed and hinting the fear of “Rat” aka the Rat-Catchers who are the Killers. Knowing she can’t change faint and possibly saving her son for a lifetime misery of becoming King, with great heartbreak choose her son to killed. While her son was getting murdered and decapitated, she says “No” possibly repeated over and over in her mind and race to protect her daughter. This is her motherly and seer instincts, as she knows she can save her daughter from being next as these men are unpredictable and dangerous which is why, even though she was in horrified and beginning to grieve hence her watery eyes and horrified expression. She race out of the nursery with her daughter, but took at a glance of what Blood and Cheese are doing to her son. She forces herself to keeping moving forward and took more glances behind her until as her daughter whimpers in her arms coming down the steps, stops possibly sensing her son is gone. Everyone reaction to trauma is different, some scream, cry or simply freezes on their own but Heleane knew what was going to happen and knew she couldn’t do something other than taking the chance to protect her daughter. From grabbing her while Blood and Cheese is killing her bother, burying her daughter’s head into her shoulder (so her daughter can’t see the murder) and racing out of there while she can. In the aftermath, Heleane wasn’t even given a moment to grieve her son, clinging to the blanket she made for him and gets no comfort or peace to grieve instead force to parade her dead boy for her grandfather’s political gain. Heleane deserve better 😢

I read the book, and the scene was brutal. I actually preferred the way they handled it here. The sounds are enough to fill in the image of what is happening. People upset we didn't see the head cut off a child need to recall how upset fans of GOT where, about a scene where a poor child was burned alive and how many cried that the scene of Sansa's wedding night with Ramsey were too graphic when they could have been far more so. I'm not one that is easily offended when watching television but when Stannis burned his daughter, now that was a scene that went too far for me. On Facebook there was a huge debate about why she gave up her son and people don't get that had she pointed out her daughter, if these two brutes had figured out she lied, they would have killed both children.

It happens in nature with animals. More often than not, a mother animal will sacrifice one of her offspring to a predator in order to save the rest. Or let the weak one die so that the rest can get stronger. Poor Haelena was in a no win scenario. Sacrifice the boy to save the girl. Or lie and risk getting all of them killed.

@@French_sultana Both did. Viserys is more infuriating because there was zero reason to remarry in order to get an heir when he PROMISED the throne to his daughter. Like, common, it doesn't take a genius to put 2+2 together to guess what the hell will happen to your daughter/her claim if you went and made ANOTHER heir to compete with her. Even if he stepped down and made his daughter a queen, it would still put her in weird position on sole fact that he now has male heirs. Even if his sons couldn't care less about the throne, that wouldn't stop others from trying to undermine Rhaenyra and try to push for one of his sons to be on the throne instead, which would put Rhaenyra in another not so pretty situation on how to deal with this so it doesn't lead to something worse (solution clearly being to kill her brothers so there is no competition at all). You can blame random power hungry guy like Otto for feeding ideas to Viserys, but he was the one to make these calls in the end. Marrying another woman for an heir after you PROMISED your throne to your daughter, was a biggest tard move possible and Viserys isn't getting nearly as much of crap as he should because everything happened due to him and his poor decisions making that everyone else payed a price for.

In the book, I got the impression that Blood and Cheese went after Helaena’s son on purpose. But, here, they make it seem like finding Helaena and her children was just happenstance. Either way, killing Helaena’s son is brutally perfect because, if he’s Aegon’s son, Rhaenyra is punishing him for starting this war by killing his son. On the other hand, if the rumor that Helaena’s children were actually fathered by Aemon is true then Rhaenyra is punishing him for killing her son. Being born into that family, the poor little tyke really never had a chance.

In the book, it was even more psychologically cruel. She had to choose between both her sons, and ultimately, she chose her younger son to be killed,so the king’s firstborn and heir would survive. To be extra cruel, Blood and Cheese chose to kill the one she did not choose, to cause her greater pain. Now she has to live knowing the king does not have his firstborn heir anymore, and every time she looks at her surviving son, she knows she had condemned him to die and will never forgive herself. She must grieve for one for being dead, and the other because she cannot bear to think of him or look at him out of guilt, effectively losing both sons. She is now forever trapped in her own, worst, permanent living hell.

The people saying this was "underwhelming" are fkn weirdos and lack critical thinking. When it comes to the four F's of trauma response, there was no way she was going to win through Fight against two grown men and then she attempts the Fawn response (by keeping her voice low and offering her necklace) but they just take it from her like its nothing. After that it became a mixture of the last two options, Flight by taking atleast one of her children and running away (she makes sure not to wail so that they dont come running for her and she constantly looks over her shoulder to make sure shes not being followed) and then once she realizes she's with her mother she enters into a Freeze state and just in shock over what happened. People needing to see a mother wailing and CHILD being beheaded, for them to be in "shock" over a scene is insane to me and honestly disgusting. This scene was still very much impactful and the actress did an amazing job, being able to convey so much emotion with basically just her EYES is very impressive.
@HulkVahkiin
@HulkVahkiin 4 месяца назад
Pretentious. People expect her to be wailing because that's what you expect a mother will do when her son gets killed in front of her, also combine that with the fact that this diverges from how it was handled from the books - yeah, people find it 'underwhelming'. Right or wrong, there is nothing 'weird' about these takes. What's weird is you take people's expectations on how a scene would go and twist it to them having needs instead.

My biggest issue with this scene isnt that they didn't show a death but the fact that they left out one of the children. The intensity of this scene in the books comes down to her having two sons and having to pick one. When she does and they kill the other instead still it haunts her. She cant even look at her youngest son after that. That gives depth to a character. Here it's just like "yeah kill him, take my jewelry, im out" I get it she was in shock but it was poor writing and just came off lazy. You don't kill innocents for the actions of their relatives. Did you know in Eastern Europe, there is a disturbing tradition that they've been trying to root out called the Blood Vengeance? Where if someone is murdered, even if the killer is sent to prison. Their relatives can exact revenge by taking the life of a relative of the murderer. Often that involves children being killed because their parents killed someone. And it specifically targets boys and men; women and girls are rarely targeted but it does happen. As a result, people end up being cooped up in houses for years and can rarely or never leave the property because of fears of being abducted and killed by grieving families. They won't step foot onto the actual property because, in those countries, you can use lethal force to stop trespassers and intruders if necessary. It can get to the point where they have to rely on friendly neighbors or friends to buy their groceries for them or to escort them to places. Because the Blood Vengeance says that 'those not connected to the murderer by blood or marriage can't be harmed'. The practice has long been outlawed yet it's estimated that thousands of people are killed every year in Eastern Europe because of people claiming the Blood Vengeance.

Omg I was anticipating this scene out of everything that happens in the Dance of the Dragons and it was so underwhelming. Helaena didn't even scream as her child is brutally murdered in front of her. The characters for Blood and Cheese don't seem very malicious either. They definitely toned down this scene for whatever reason but I think it was the wrong choice 😕

Censorship laws. With kids that little, they can't do anything that would leave the child actors traumatized. Nor are they allowed to have child characters die in too brutal fashions. They probably didn't have Haelena's actress screaming because they didn't want to scare the kids. Instead, they switched it to where she's in shock and rendered speechless in terror as she grabs the girl and runs

Not everyone screams in a situation like that. I honestly think she did a phenomenal job portraying a woman in shock and trauma after an incident like this.

That is heartbreaking. And to top it all off, they started doing it in front of her. Disgusting.

I feel like when she stopped walking and spaced out, she had a quick vision.

Why couldn’t Daemon have just gone in himself with Cheese? They’d have stumbled upon Aegon II and he could have killed ol’ king dragoncock right there with his drunk buddies.

Because the chances of Daemon being noticed would be very high.

They couldn't because of censorship laws. Because they were working with 4 year olds, by law, they couldn't do anything that would leave the kids traumatized if the adults acting were to scare them. Child characters are rarely allowed to die, and when it's allowed, it can't be done in a too brutal of fashion.

It seems that this clip look almost similar to the scene in William Shakespeare's Macbeth where two assassins ordered by Macbeth who was just became King, killing Duncan's wife and son except that the mother escaped with her daughter but letting her son get murdered.

They could've gagged one of them and held him hostage. That would've instantly shifted the war in Rhaenyra's favor

I wonder if episode 2 will go deeper into the aftermath … because of the maid with blood soaked cloths in previous official trailers
