The director mentioned that he only knew that they had actually nailed the sense of fear when watching it with an audience in theaters and someone literally stood up and yelled, _"Lady, leave the f-cking cat!!"_ which reminded me of your feelings while watching it. It's still one of my favourite cosmic horror films.

I'm 62 now and I did see it in the theater when it first came out Still the scariest movie I have ever seen. 60 myself and I saw it in the theater too. What makes this movie so great, imo, is how slowly Ridley Scott builds the tension. I hadn't seen it done to that extent before and it's impossible to even conceive of happening now, given that the average attention span these days can probably be measured in seconds. Really enjoy your reactions too. You put a lot of thought into them. It's also reassuring to know that you will never let an exposed butt crack go unnoticed. ; )

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. Revelation 9:1-11

I was working for the Army in Heidelberg Germany when this movie came out, and I saw it with a theater full of young GIs. I specifically remember how rowdy and loud this audience was when the movie started. That all came to a screeching halt at the chest burster scene. Nobody had ever seen anything like that before and these GIs could only whisper about how gross this movie was. Ridley Scott's audacity as a filmmaker stunned us all into silence. Most people and critics at first thought this movie was terrible, but over time its reputation has grown into a horror masterpiece. That is true of so many movies. It may take years for people to appreciate how truly ahead of their time they are. That's certainly true of most of Kubrick's movies and Ridley Scott's early movies.

All of us who watch reaction channels are people for whom these movies meant a lot; and it's good to see that someone so young can appreciate it and be surprised like we did at the time. When you show that level of interest and respect for those movies, we feel appreciated as well. Thanks for that. Now get ready for the sequel, which is radically different, but also a gem, especially in terms of production scale. And if you liked Ripley, in the sequel you will love her. She is possibly the most badass leading character in movie history. Greetings from Peru 🙌

I have technically watched it in theatres, but my parents watched it completely fresh in 1979 after hearing a Radio DJ saying how great it was. They said it was terrifying. The fact that it's so dark and you don't see much isn't an accident, but it has a similar story to Jaws - the director was tired of cheesy-looking aliens so avoided revealing it if he could, so it makes your imagination do the work.

I was already in 5th grade when it came out, but I had heard so many horrible things about the film that I was way too scared to watch it. Also, at this time, cinemas were quite strict with the age limits, and this one had a minimum age of 16 or 18. I still managed to get into the original Star Wars movie (minimum age 12), although it came out about a month before my birthday. I watched Alien a couple of years later in theatre. In the 80s and 90s there were about 150 art house cinemas in Berlin, and you could watch basically any significant film ever made since the silent film era in cinemas, at least from time to time and Alien at least once per week. Much better than VHS at home.

My high school buddy, Mike Beardsley, came out of the theater and wanted to buy a ticket and get in line to see it again. We joined him. Sat in the front row, far left. When the star cruiser slowly flew overhead, my brain had a hard time processing what I was seeing. I will forever be a Star Wars fan.

I saw this in the summer of '79 with my mother and father. I was sitting on the left side of my mom who kept grabbing my arm when the movie got intense. My right arm hurt for an hour afterward. The movie left me slightly traumatized and in a weird emotional state. I think that's why on the way home a song on the car radio became imprinted on my brain. Today "Born To Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez is still THE ALIEN song to me.

No need to be faster. One video per week is fine. I like the way you actually re-watch and analyze the movies and do research on it for your final segment. It's the best part of your video, in my opinion. Too many reaction channels end up being just react, and "like and subscribe". Oh, Whimsory, you are *_so_* delightfully good at this! 😁 You immerse yourself in the story, and so we become invested, too! Your editing choices are also top notch, especially what you choose to retain. Many reactors cut out lots of early scenes in order to get to the climax more quickly, but with an atmospheric film like _Alien_ , removing too much of the set up also removes most of the suspense. Finally, don't let any of the whiners out there cramp your style! I'm sure that as you gain experience, you'll be able to refine your editing and production process so that you can create reactions more quickly and efficiently. But many of us *_love_* the fact that you take time after the initial viewing to rewatch, research, and think about what you saw and read. It elevates your post-film discussions to a completely different plane compared to the rank and file reactors out there! Keep up the excellent work! 👍👍

Yea, the older the movie the less overtly bloody and gory it is. The onscreen deaths are not too bad compare to modern horror. At the same time, the general sense of dread and foreboding is emphasized through the music, sets, camera and so on is heavier in turn for when the jump scare or killing does happen it does get to you.

27:20 - "..., 'cause most of it is in your head." - Yes! You're very perceptive; you're the first reactor I've seen pick up on that. This movie is _famous_ for that. The alien is hardly ever seen, and yet it looms incredibly large in the movie, generating enormous tension _because_ you don't see it and your mind is therefore free to "fill the shadows" as you alluded to earlier. This movie more or less invented that technique.

Another solid video. You do a really good job at reviewing the movies, offering insightful opinions and thoughts. I think out of all the stuff you've watched so far, seeing you sit through the horror stuff is by far my favorite. (Though Good Will Hunting was a fun one too, Seeing you emotionally invested is the thing I think. Whether that is fear, or otherwise.) Really love your channel, It's a good day when I see you post a new Reaction. Don't let people rush you to put out content, go at your own pace. Finding time to watch/re-watch, all your note taking, not to mention real life obligations. I'd be much happier waiting a week or two for a new video of this quality, instead of you burning out and giving it up all together. Or rushing to put sub par videos out. I saw this with my cousin when it first came out when I was about 18... we came out of the movie theatre at the end and we were both like "Holy shit". The breakfast scene at the time was really shocking. But we did appreciate young Sigourney Weaver in her underwear. Teenage boys being what they are. Currently no cats in space. No vermin to eat and the payloads are very finely calculated (rocket fuel is mega-expensive) - and you wouldn't want fur and cat puke floating around in a vacuum (which is the other thing - kitty litter wouldn't work). So cats will have to wait.

I like to compare space-travel in the Alien-universe to sailing on Earth: as the distances are so great, it's still an unknown and you're out of touch when you're out there. So if the technical stuff feels like it goes over the viewer's head, you should feel fine, it's just the same as when you're watching a navy movie and don't understand the ship-board lingo. You're just watching the story from your own perspective.

28:41 lol, Jonesy, watching the Alien rip his human crew-mates apart: "Ah, so that's what eats humans, then. I always wondered. I, too, enjoy ripping my prey apart while it screams." Unfortunately I think the cat should not have survived. The alien grows from the chestburster to full size without eating anything, therefore creating body-mass magically. As a fan of hard scifi, it seems obvious to me that it should have first eaten the cat (off-screen, we don't need to see that), then the first human and only then grow to the full size we see.

@@lassesipila6418 There was a cut scene in the movie where they are looking for the "little alien" and go into food storage searching and find that it had been ransacked. With multiple "skins" lying on the floor". It was cut because they thought that it made it too obvious to the audience what had happened and they wanted the size of the alien to come as a surprise during the "big reveal". But you can assume that food storage on the Nostromo was still raided but that the crew never had the opportunity to discover that before they had bigger problems. Also, in the alien lore. If a chestburster is "born" into an environment where little food is available to grow, due to its acidic blood it can almost consume anything to increase its size in an emergency including things like rubber, plastic and even metal. It prefers not to do this of course and to find other "biologically friendly food sources", but it can if necessary. And the Nostromo is a ship which is basically all metal, rubber and plastic etc. So not "magical" mass gaining either way.
@lassesipila6418
@lassesipila6418 Год назад
@@snaek29 Ah well, at least there's that then. Silly to cut it, I'd just leave it in but put it after the reveal that it's big now, if you wanted to keep it from spoiling that. Aliens eating anything in a pinch, didn't know that, interesting lore and it makes sense. Actually it makes so much sense that now I'm doubting if the Alien should actually bother being a predator at all? Well, maybe it's fiercely territorial, then. But they should've shown this capability at some point. Ah well, just a pet peeve of mine with this film.

@snaek29 Год назад
@@lassesipila6418 I should have said... that "lore" came in long after the original Alien movie (graphic novels, comics etc). All Xenomorphs job is to protect the Queen, build the nest and to retrieve more "hosts" to create more members of their hive. When no more hosts in the area are available and there are no potential threats to the hive they hibernate to save energy to such a degree that they don't even need to feed. On planets where the aliens have dominated and have converted all (or most of) the life available on it... usually by that point there are multiple hives run by multiple queens. And queens DO NOT suffer competition. Which means all out war between different hives. These wars can last hundreds of years... perhaps longer. Until eventually there is only 1 single massive planetwide hive ruled over by 1 queen. Aliens by nature are always expanding, always converting, always fighting for their queen. It is in their nature.

To me I think the movie really gets you to care about the crew and to make you feel like that this is their ship and that’s the place they are in control. This was from the golden age of cinema were you genuinely get the feeling of being drawn in and they never treat the audience like they’re dumb. The feeling of isolation is built up extremely well and you go from feeling comfortable with the crew in act one, to scared and nervous in act two, then by the third act your on the edge of your seat and scared because she has no choice but to win this game of deadly hide and seek. I think one of the reasons this movie stands the test of time is because the alien is never in your face so death could be just around the corner and they are in space they can’t run away or hide they have to press through. I love it, even my mother said people were genuinely scared in the theatre. Good video very interesting and thoughtful.

Spot on with your comment about how little of the Alien was shown, because we don't know exactly what the Alien looks like, it makes it scarier, I guess it's the fear of the unknown. I was 18 when I saw this in the theater one hot summer day in 1979. The place was jam-packed, and I ended up having to take a seat in about the 3rd row from the screen. So the picture was huge, and the experience was all-encompassing. It still stands as the number one scariest movie I ever saw. The whole place, a hundred people, screamed like crazy as the creature broke out of John Hurt's chest and all the other jump scares, etc. There was a lot of screaming in the theater that day, 40-some years ago and I remember it well.

I was 16 when this came out. I saw it in the theater and I loved it and also had nightmares that night. Back then there was not a lot of this type of visual effects in fact there had never been anything like it. Today everyone has seen it all by the time they are 13 and are so desensitized to visual horror that this movie doesn't hit a hard as it did back in the day. That being said visually it still holds up and can compare to anything being released today. Other than Star Wars, a movie that I saw when I was 13 it was the best experience I have had in the theater.

Great reaction! I always appreciate your analysis after the movies! I first saw this in High School. My English teacher showed us this in class as an example of the best suspense film ever made. He talked about exactly what you pointed out, how we barely ever see the alien and a lot of the horror of this movie comes from our own imagination. The next sequel, Aliens, is as good if not better. These two movies are very similar to Terminator and Terminator 2 in that the first one is more horror, and the second one is more action. None of the other Alien movies hold a candle to the first two. Alien 3 is probably a decent movie, but there's something that happens in the first few minutes that I can't get past, so I hate that move. Alien Resurrection is generally not great, although they do have one really clever storytelling element that they use. Prometheus is pretty good overall although it does have one famously really dumb part. Alien Covenant (the sequel to Prometheus) is also decent. A lot of people really hate the two Alien vs. Predator movies. I agree the second one (Requiem) is dogshit, but I sorta like the first one. The characters aren't very memorable, but who doesn't want to see a Predator fight an Alien?

Of course I reacted to jump scares, but I would compare what I read against the movie. Still I enjoyed the movie. For the time period the setting depiction of space travel was pretty good and better depicted than that of StarTrek of the 1960s.
