"Alien" is back in theaters for a one-week run in honor of its 45th anniversary starting April 26, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to revisit Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece. You know how much we love going back and watching movies from years ago to see whether they still hold up today, and this one definitely does. If you've never seen this film projected, here's your chance. Plus you'll be able to see a conversation between Scott and "Alien: Romulus" director Fede Alvarez beforehand. Written by Dan O'Bannon. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Yaphet Kotto, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton and Ian Holm. What are your memories of the original "Alien"? Let us know in the comments!

This to me is easily one of the very best horror films. It solves the problem with haunted house movie cause you can’t leave in space.

It also gets points for having smart characters not making idiotic mistakes that get them killed the way most horror movies do. Everyone involved is doing the best they can with what they have to survive but still lose out because of the strength of the Alien. That’s good writing.

I was 14 in 1979 and saw it about 30 times in theaters that Summer. More than Star Wars 2 years earlier. Bought every book and magazine that had to do with Alien. Got the 18 inch Alien figure that came out that year. Became heavily interested in the making of movies from script to production because of my love of Alien. Every time it's been brought back to theaters I always go. Including the 40th Anniversary in 2019. Have tickets for Saturday. Watch it atleast once a year. Alien is in my cinematic DNA.

It was revolutionary cinema back in those days and so was Star Wars but it's really two different films. I remember back then I was lining up for Star Wars and haven't heard of even alien so missed the chance to see this movie because all the hype was given to Star Wars but IMO the first alien was truly groundbreaking back in those days without CGI. The giant ship and space jockey alone was worth the price of admission. It's still good even today.

I was 14 too in 1979 and was terrified by the movie but was mesmerized and have been a major fan since. I watch it pretty often. I saw all 4 films back to back when Resurrection premiered. It was exhausting but awesome!

I saw it the day after it opened, not knowing anything about it except the cool ads. At the chest- burst scene, I threw myself back in my seat so hard I was afraid I'd broken it. No other film has ever elicited such a violent reaction. It's brilliant.

Superb analyses of a landmark, saw it in the theater originally and couldn't sleep for days. Thrilled that it's returning to cinemas, and totally agree that big screen reissues of classic repertory constitute a win win for us all. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.

I saw it in the AMC prime theater today and it still holds tremendous power even today. It has one of the greatest ensemble of actors put together ever for a movie. The scene in the climax where Ripley comes face to face with the Alien as the self destruct clock is counting down still has me on the edge of seat even today. A special shoutout should go to Alan Ladd, Jr, who was the head of 20th Century Fox who also green lit the Original Star Wars Film. He developed the project and gave the project the green light for production. It’s too bad there aren’t studio heads like him anymore.

Awesome....one of the best films of all time. Ash is just as terrifying as any xenomorph. But also what's frightening is the idea that Ripley sees the destruction this other lifeform has reeked upon humanity without even knowing how it looks. But the audience and her definitely know that it has grown in size.
@ReviewRoomie
@ReviewRoomie 5 месяцев назад
Ash just seems like a big jerk. With his eye rolls and heavy sighs against Ripley, it seems like just coworker issues. But to know it's by design...Ian Holm was phenomenal and made his unrealness feel so real.

I watched it last night so I could see it on the big screen for the first time. The movie holds up well. I especially want to praise the arming of the destruct sequence. It's so realistic, from Riply having to read the instructions to how much you have to work at it. There's no ridiculous big red button anyone can press to go boom. Well done!

Which version is this? When originally released to theaters the film's image was a bit dark. When it was being readied for home the studio told Ridley Scott that a dark image works on a threater screen but for home video (on the small TV's available then which are nothing like the wide screen sets you can get now) the image would be hard to see so Scott allowed the studio to brighten the picture. Scott approved and thought it looked great and said if he'd realized how much better it would look that way he would have made the theatrical version look like that. So far as I know that is the only version that exists now, not the 1979 theatrical version.

It's just a damn shame there was never a sequel to "Aliens" that would have ignored the events of A3 and A4. It would have presented an adult Newt who is now a soldier, having been raised by Ripley and Hicks, and on her own quest to vanquish the creatures that killed her family. There was to be such a film by director Neill Blomkamp ("District 9"). Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn were supposed to return, along with Jennifer Lawrence as the grown-up Newt. But the project was shelved by Paramount Studios at the urging of Ridley Scott so he could do his own two, pointless sequels, "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant". What a loss to cinema!

I wanted to see this so bad when it came out but I wasn't old enough and didn't see it until several years later on VHS. It didn't disappoint. And then, like Christy, was blown away by Aliens in the theater a few more years later. Both very different films but each holds a spot in my favorites list. Unfortunately none of the subsequent films have come close. Fincher's had a lot of atmosphere and interesting ideas and imagery but ultimately didn't work. Prometheus set up some interesting things that were completely failed by its followup. I feel like I've spent years being excited and then let down every time another one of these comes along.

SPOILER - I think its a great movie but i have a problem with the end. The Alien is supposed to be a perfect organism. Impossible to kill.
