When my daughter was young she begged me to let her watch Alien vs. Predator. She's was a ;little young for that so I kept telling her no. She kept on asking so I made her a deal. I told her if she can sit through the first Alien, I'd let her watch it. She agreed. As soon as that egg opened she stood up and said "nope, nope nope" and walked away lol
I just wrote a comment on seeing this at the drive in when it came out the egg opening… me too I was like 4 and I was nope nope nope too. I climbed all the way to the back of the van and slept. 😂
My Dad used to tape/record films from the TV. He taped Disneys Beauty and the Beast after Aliens... Not knowing how to use the remote and a bucket of stubbornness later I'm still a huge horror fan 😍
Funny enough, my sister skipped over Alien because she felt it would be too scary for my niece and went straight to Aliens because it was more action, because 8 year old niece was on a 80s/90s and was being introduced to a bunch of old action movies, and love it...
The first Alien movie I watched was Aliens. And I was very young. We watched it at home, so it was either on TV or it was a VHS copy, I can’t remember. But I remember when the chest bursted scene happened very very clearly. My mom tried to cover my eyes with her hand, but there were pretty large gaps between her fingers. So I saw everything….. that night I couldn’t sleep and pulled every stuffed animal I had (and I had a lot) and piled them into my bed hoping the “alien” wouldn’t see me in the middle of them all…… 😂 Years later I went back to watch Alien, even knowing what was coming it scared the crap out of me. I treasure those memories now that my mom has passed. Makes me laugh to think that mom thought her hand prevented me from seeing anything
That is a myth. They knew a creature was going to burst out… it’s written in the script. They just did not know how they were going to achieve the effect and Cartwright didn’t expect to have her face splattered with blood.
During the filming of the sequel to this film (Aliens) the film crew showed parts of the film to a limited group of people. They recorded their heartbeat during different scenes. Then, the music and ambient sounds were adjusted to the recorded heart rhythms.
Even more messed up: The prop body rig that the chestburster popped from was stuffed with real animal guts and blood, so not only did they not know what was coming, but they were legitimately grossed out by it on top of the shock
It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it made $200 million dollars against an $11 million dollar budget, it spawned 3 Sequels, 2 spinoff films, 2 crossover films, video games, comics, novels, toys, board games, novelizations, and an upcoming live action TV series, it's now considered to be one of the scariest motion pictures ever made.
To be fair, Bret and Parker did not really have a say and Parker actually backed Ripley up saying she had a point about the Captain's order breaking the law. Parker is also the one who suggested they should immediately freeze Cain. This would have saved their lives as well. While that would endanger all of the earth by allowing the corporation to get the specimen. That is the worst-case scenario. Another scenario would have been that in isolated space labs under controlled conditions, a team of scientists and medical personnel may have devised a way to remove the parasite, identify the embryo it implanted, and remove it as well. Even if unable to do so and Cain still lost his life. The xenomorph may have been isolated and held in secure confinement at an isolated and secure space lab location. Even doomsday scenario and the lab is lost to the alien, you can remotely detonate it. The point is that the story would have been very different had Ripley OR Parker been listened to. Brett was Parker's yes man so he also was one who died because of the Captain and Ash's decision. It was not the whole crew who broke quarantine procedures. Parker and Brett were the labor they completed their job description and more. They died because of the Captain's stupidity and Ash's betrayal.
Alien 3 tried to be like the original but they had plans originally a different route which would of captured true horror in xenomorph lore they honestly redeemed in alien resurrection however Prometheus being first prequel it was okish but in alien covenant it was "interesting" dived into the creation of xenomorphs which being a continuation from Prometheus which was still strange however I know next year alien is getting a TV series through Hulu I believe kinda what they did with prey the prequel to original series on predator to predator 2 then predators and also The predator (4) then you got avp and avp r and I heard Hulu might take the route for third entry on avp
@@biohazardhip2385 Late ass reply here but Alien3 had such a bad development cycle, they switched out directors like 3 or 4 times, people bailed and the script got redone half a dozen times, it was a behind the scenes disaster and the film itself suffered for it. 3 is the weakest of the original Ripley stuff, but it holds up better than Resurrection ever did.
Omg me too. I was freaking dying at both their reactions. I haven’t laughed that hard in a while. The part with the milk squirting out had me tearing up.
It's even funnier, when ALIEN did have many sexual aspects to it, as the writers wrote erotic novels before this movie. I think it was mentioned they had an idea for Lambert to be actually raped by the alien, but left it to imagination with the tail going between her legs.
I saw this in the theater when I was 13. It was my first R-rated movie (and horror movie) and I begged my Dad to take me and my best friend. Like 13-year-olds, we didn’t want to be seen with my father so he sat a few rows back from us. When the alien jumped out onto his face, I screamed and I jumped up so high that I toppled into the guy in the seat behind me. While everyone in the theater sat horrified at what was on the screen, I could hear my dad laughing hysterically.
And now I’m laughing. I think I was 16 when I watched this the first time. I was on a plane back from skiing in Colorado with my dad and it was like 11 at night and pitch black out. Do not recommend. I don’t think I screamed but it was still super unsettling.
Alien was so suspenseful. Ripley is a badass. One of the first female heroes in movies. Loved the plot, the story, the characters, the acting. Good reaction. Robot Ian Holm played Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings movies.
I was 19 years old when this film was released, but the intended horror of its creators is still intact! Riddley Scott as the Director made an indestructible masterpiece of horror that it transcends the boundaries of time!
I know it's just a funny meme and all that but I also think that's a generally uncharitable assessment of the film, considering they act pretty intelligently throughout the whole thing. Outside of Kane sticking his face near an Alien egg (which, while not the greatest decision in the world, it would be overzealous of the audience to expect him to know he's in a horror movie and therefore in imminent danger, and also he's wearing a fully enclosed spacesuit), nobody does anything particularly stupid. Most of the deaths come from a consequence of Ash sabotaging their plans (Dallas), the crew not recognizing the danger they're in (Kane and Brett), or running out of options (Parker and Lambert being cornered and unable to escape). People like to quote The Thing as a good example of a "horror movie with only smart characters" but honestly I think the same accolade could easily go to this film as well.

@@reginaldgickington4793 I agree absolutely. The crews of cargo vessels on earth get overwhelmed by catastrophes they should be able to deal with, let alone a homicidal alien creature running around below decks.
Working in government, I relate to Ripley. I've been that person in the room saying NO that won't work, and here's my professional opinion about the thing you pay me to be a professional in, oh you're doing that thing anyway, ok great best of luck, too bad when it fails it'll hurt us all.
And everyone forgets the other really "smart" person in the film was Lambert, played by the wonderful Veronica Cartwright. It was Lambert who first raised concerns about heading towards and exploring the source of the "distress" signal / Derelict. After discovering the "Space Jockey", wondering what the heck happened to the rest of the Derlelict's "crew", and seeing the explosive rupture in the Space Jockey's desiccated corpse/skeleton -- it was Lambert who says the famous dialogue: "Let's Get the Hell Outta Here". Finally, after Dallas is killed in the air shafts, Lambert is the first to raise the possibility of abandoning the ship and escaping in the shuttle...although, at that moment in time, it was not a viable solution, due to the shuttle's crew-size limits.
3:20 I always loved that these characters aren’t explorers, they are just the crew of a freight ship. They aren’t trying to seek out new lifeforms they are just trying to make a living. Then this mess happens.
H.R. Gieger who won an Oscar for his concept of the alien, was brought in by Ridley Scott after he saw his book "Necronomicon". Scott and his crew wanted a really good monster and based on what he saw in the book, they found they guy to help them. When Gieger flew into LAX to discuss his work with 20th Century Fox, the customs people were so freaked out by his work that he was brought to a room and questioned about the disturbing images in his artwork.
After all the time I've spent watching Nikki and Steven I had it backwards. I thought Nikki was putting up with Steven. After watching this I realized Steven is a saint and has been putting up with Nikki. Bless you sir. 🤣🤣🤣
Great reaction - as always. And now fast forward to James Cameron's "ALIENS". "ALIEN" is really good, a true classic, but "ALIENS" is pure madness, probably the best sequel (and the best scifi-action movie) ever made!

A classic! Nikki's was on fire with the jokes. 😆 The alien and the alien ship were designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger. Most of his art looks similar to what you see in the movie. It's really creepy.
I've got books of his works, to say the least some of the images are quite disturbing. It was a stroke of genius to let him design the alien ship as well as the alien itself.
"This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off." Alien is a fantastic film. What makes "Alien" a cut above 99% of the Sci-Fi films is the acting and the characters. No one is thumping their chest how great they're, there's no super heroes, there's no sappy love interests, the banter, the dialogue is what you'd expect on a space shuttle mission once they are up and Ridley Scott went for straight steel cold realism. Alien has been able to achieve such lifelike characters that seem like actual people. Fantastically atmospheric, chilling and terrifying even now, the story holds up incredibly well. The special effects were incredible for the time, no wonder the franchise is still in demand, though sadly nowhere near the quality of this one or its amazing successor. Overall, Alien remains one of the most original, terrifying films of all time and everything is so carefully, expertly constructed to the point that repeated viewings are just as good as the first and the atmosphere, along with the amazing sets, is real shocker, which few films have managed to create the same kind eerie feeling.
You hit the nail on the head! Talent like Harry Dean, Sigourney, Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt et al are superlative! And I just don’t know that you get such a great cast in most sci-fi/horror movies these days.
I remember in the 90s having an "Alien" theme on my Windows XP computer. When my computer logged off it had Ripley's sign off. I also had a lot of the sound fx from the movie embedded into the theme. Computers were fun then.
I will forever love this film for letting the cat survive for once! I automatically hate films that unnecessarily bring in an animal just to kill it off.
Alien,...43 years old & still a masterpiece 👍 I remember watching it in the cinema all those years ago, back in the day when they had ushers selling popcorn, ice cream & Kia-Ora juice drinks in the corner of the auditorium.
Well, that was a fancy theater, compared to ours. The far away one was the fancy theater for us. We went to that one for Star Wars and Close Encounters.
@@vilefly it was the old ABC cinema back in those days, & they had 2 screens. Now it's the Regal & Wetherspoons downstairs. I wish I had got to see Close Encounters on the BIG screen 😕
This is an absolute classic, and I'm so glad you guys watched it! Steven, your comments about the sounds and silence are spot on. That's one of the things that made this so good. We saw it in the theater (yeah, I'm old), and during the entire chest-bursting scene, my friend was digging her fingernails into my arm. I definitely recommend Aliens, and I definitely do not recommend any of the other sequels. Great reactions as always you two!!
Steven, I love your appreciation of these “old” movies. I saw this one on its initial release at one of those old school movie palaces, before the advent of multiplexes. It’s still one of my favorites. People will tell you to also watch Aliens, and they are right. Just as good as Alien but for different reasons. The first movie is a haunted house thriller. The second is “cowboys and Indians”.
Love you both! Whenever you watch Aliens, try to watch the directors cut. It has important scenes that make the movie better. One of my all-time favorites! Thanks for everything you do.
I love the appreciation you guys have for this movie! I've seen so many people watch this for the first time and go "Meh, seen stuff like that before"; without recognizing that they've only seen stuff like that because of the influence this movie had. So many Horror- and Science Fiction-films owe a lot to this movie. A lot of what Alien did seems so normal now, but was so unusual at the time - from being a sci-fi-movie showing a lived-in-future, centering about average people just trying to do their job (instead of a clean white future and centering around space captains with special missions); to being one of the first horror films that had the sole survivor be a badass woman who fought tooth and nail to survive (instead of being a guy, being saved by a guy, or surviving because of being blonde, pretty and chaste). Not to mention behind-the-scenes stuff like essentially genderblind casting (with only a few lines of the script being adjusted later to account for gender) or the director being a bit evil and surprising the actors with a shocking scene (the chestburster-scene - the cast had of course read the script and knew that it was happening; but they didn't know how much blood there would be or how the alien looked, leading to much more natural reactions).
My favorite bit of trivia about the movie is that the scene where they find the pilot for the original pilot was storyboarded like what we see onscreen, but the soundstage wasn't big enough to build a set so large... So director Ridley Scott had copies of the spacesuits scaled down to fit his small children and they're seen in the scene with the adult actors providing voiceovers.
The sets created for this movie are incredible.....it's a haunted house/slasher movie in space. This movie and the first sequel inspired so many things that came after.
My uncle showed me this on VHS in like, 1990 when I was 9. It scared the absolute piss out of me (literally), but it began a lifelong love of "grimdark" scifi. Can't wait to see if you guys watch the next one, "Aliens". A very different movie, but one of my all-time favorites.
@@j9lorna Heck, if Catachan's guardsmen are a whole legion of Rambos and the ops from Predator, I'd guess the marines had a lot to do with the look of the conventional Imperial Guardsmen.
@@Knight-Bishop that's how I always saw them. There were rules for using them in space hulk but with 1 d6 instead of 2 that really caught the way the colonial marines handle themselves
@@j9lorna I don't actually play 40k, haven't even played a video game or read a book, but I'm one of those well-meaning blasphemers that has become intrigued by the lore and binged whatever I could since it caught me. Lol I think the guardsmen are my favorite faction for the same reason Bricky likes them: compared to all of the ancient superbeings, relatively advanced tech of species that is only coming into its first superstate, hiveminded perfect bioweapons, or literal reality-breaking demons... They're just regular guys with what would be modern superweapons, yet are underpowered in this world. Just normal humans willing to face all that absolute horror with more often or not a twisted smile and acceptance of their likely fate. Even fighting when they're beyond terrified, because any single destroyed enemy is better than one still kicking. Like... Yeah. The Space Marines are awesome for being able to match these things toe to toe and prevail... After all that was done to them. And are literally made to not feel fear. But the Guardsmen do feel fear, and still do what they can. In 40k... Hell, just knowing what happens if you somehow survive facing Chaos and then know what happens if you get a visit from the Inquisitors, let alone get "rescued" by the Grey Knights... With all that, and you still fight? Balls the size of Cadia before it broke, man. Lol
@@Knight-Bishop agreed, the guard is relatable like the marines are not. It has been a while since I have played and really, the best stories arise from the more human characters in the imperium, inquisitors are basically detective and crime stories, imperial guardsman are basically war tales. If you get the chance to read them, then Gaunts Ghosts (like Sharpe), Ciaphas Cain (very Blackadder-like) and Inquisitor Eisenhorn/Ravenor series are all rip roaring fantastic reads. It's hard to pick a favourite but Ciaphas Cain is one I always get a giggle from. Also, look up Sly Marbo (40k's Catachan version of Rambo - Marbo getting? And his completely overpowered jungle antics. Mental!
Great reaction! Alien will always be in my Top 5 movies of all time. You now need to watch Aliens and Alien 3. The third movie suffers from now outdated CGI effects, but the story still works.
I relate to you both commenting on the music. I really love the score in this movie. Especially the quiet, fleeting bits where its mostly woodwinds. It has the character of echoes in space, just a really "isolated" feeling score!!! And when it builds to suspenseful parts, the score is perfect at amplifying your sense of dread. Jerry Goldsmith, the composer, knocked it out of the park!
there's literally too much music in films now (well, since the 90s probably), is likely some union thing. Music that wouldn't be there in the scene takes you out of the scene. The lack of music in Alien is a masterpiece.
Now time for Aliens, which is without a doubt one of the greatest movies ever made. It's a pure masterpiece. It's hard to believe a movie like this one could be topped.
_Aliens_ is the normie/people's favorite. Turns the alien into a hive of gigantic insects, complete with a video game boss monster. A fun action/shoot-'em-up movie, very well made entertainment, but no way is it as good as the first movie, which is ART at a whole higher level.
@@MiloDC Incorrect. Aliens is not just an action movie. The writing is as solid as it gets. Great story, great dialog. The characters are amazing. Everything about it is as good as it gets. You can't improve on it. Different style from the first movie, which was actually a genius decision, because trying to repeat the same thing would have been a horrible failure.
@@miller-joel _Aliens_ is an excellent popcorn movie, in which the singular intelligent and virtually unkillable menace of the first movie (a truly alien creature with a weird life cycle that could perpetuate its species by morphing humans into eggs) is basically turned into an ant colony of mindless and easily dispatched drones led by a queen ant. It's significantly less creative and less terrifying than the first movie, and the director (Cameron) had to introduce the queen monster because his story made the monster from the first movie essentially impotent. (Just point your gun and pull the trigger.) _Aliens_ is the movie preferred by yahoos, gamers, and jocks who were "totally blown away" by the fight scenes, the funny script (mostly Hudson), the butch Latina, the huge boss monster, and "Get away from her you bitch!" It's a terrific example of a fun summer blockbuster-type thrill ride. Extremely well made entertainment. I like it a lot, it's a blast. But. What it DOESN'T have is a small cast of actors who are all AAA-level, every one of whom makes his/her character utterly unique. It doesn't have a single implacable threat that continually changes form and becomes more threatening with each permutation, eventually achieving a phase of virtual indestructability. It doesn't have a legendary horror film score composed by one of the two greatest masters of cinematic music of the last hundred years. It doesn't innovate by subverting expectations as to who will be the hero of the movie. It doesn't have directing and cinematography so stylistic and influential that it looks like it came out last week - because it defined a look for an entire generation of sci-fi horror cinema. It doesn't have one of the most creative and most recognizable opening title sequences in the history of cinema. It doesn't introduce the world to the greatest movie monster ever invented. It doesn't create an incredibly unnerving air of mystery and unfamiliarity by first introducing us to _another_ ultra-bizarre alien being inside its bizarre alien spacecraft. And it damned sure doesn't have any scene as absolutely iconic as the chestburster scene in the first film. I could go on (believe me), but I think you get my point. And even if you don't, someone else did.
Legendary movie. Literally. The first example of tension done perfectly and at the same time inventing the best horror space film, probably up to date too. All film-makers can take lessons here. History written with this film.
Love your content, so happy you have watched this movie. Of course now you have to watch the second one, "Aliens" the directors cut. The og is good, but the directors cut adds so much more and helps explain some things. Bonus "Aliens" is more sci-fi combat/action movie then it is a horror movie 🎬
The first time I watched this movie (1980s), it was at night. Close to midnight. By the time the alien birthed, I was using newspapers to cover myself because I was feeling cold and scared. Much later, engrossed, I yelled "Behind You!!!" to Ripley, scaring the wits out of my three brothers watching with me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Alien has maybe the most amazing cast ever assembled. Every one of these guys is a legendary character actor: John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton, Tom Skerritt, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto, Veronica Cartwright, Sigourney Weaver...even the cat was amazing.
@@brandocalrissian3294 Jones is actually played by 4 different cats in Alien. The names of these incredible actors are, unfortunately, lost to history as far as I can tell. But he is played by Boris the cat in Aliens!
@@nidh1109 I still give Alien the nod, because everyone in the cast is stellar. Harry Potter and LotR probably have a greater number of great actors, but not as a percentage of the cast. Everyone in Alien is great.
The lighting and ambient soundscape of this movie is close to unparalleled. The fact that the only two things that date a movie from 1979 is the computer technology and animatronics is such an impressive feat in itself.
And really, the computer tech doesn't date it _that_ much. In space, you want your computers to be durable, with plenty of redundant backups, because unless you have really good shielding it's going to pick up a lot of cosmic radiation which can cause things like parity errors. Also, the Nostromo is an industrial ship. The crew spends most of their time in hypersleep, so it's not like they need a top-end gaming rig for morale. So, it's not going to have a bunch of expensive computer equipment on board anyway. I'm surprised it even has an AI like MU/TH/UR. Seems a bit expensive for a glorified space tug (unless it's Weyland-Yutani policy).
@@notchjohnson2540 Alien Isolation makes you apriciate the sounds all the more, when your scared stiff and trying to figure out if that hiss was machinery or the Alien catching a glimpse of you, or trying to quietly find cover after accidently making a sound with the Alien thudding down the hallway far to close
Welcome to the gold standard of the space horror genre. Now for something many consider to be even better: Aliens. Yes, the sequel to this masterpiece is all that and more. I hope a reaction to it is on your radars.
When you guys eventually do the other films make sure to do the special edition director's cut for "Alien's".. And the assembly cut for "Alien 3" it's about 30 minutes longer and a more in-depth better film.. there's also a Canon video game called "Alien isolation" that plays out in between the events of the first and second film, it's a great first person survival horror🍻🍻
Trivia: Ripley was not supposed to be the lone survivor. Dallas was, however, director Ridley Scott decided it would be Ripley. I hope you paid attention to what Dallas said to Ripley at the beginning when she was questioning him about Ash. He said, "They replaced our regular science officer with Ash two days before we left Thedus." The background on that is Weyland/Yutani, the company they all worked for, got some signal from that area called LV426. They were required via W/Y to touch down on any planet to explore whatever life form that was. In essence all other protocols are more or less not valid as W/Y wanted to exploit whatever it was to their monetary gain. Hence what Ash said to Parker and Brett about the forfeiture of shares. That is company policy. W/Y knew there was something there and they needed someone to guarantee delivery of whatever they found there, so they replaced the Nostromo's regular science officer who would question what the computer said about "A"Priority one. Insure return of organism for analysis.All other considerations secondary.Crew expendable." Meaning, a human decision would not follow through with that order, however, a trusted android who is programmed to do the company's bidding would. As for what NIkki said about all the eggs hatching back in the Derelict ship, they won't hatch until there is a host for them, like Kane was. As for why the alien did not go after Jones, in the novelization the alien thought Jones a higher form of life and wouldn't attack. Jones was never in jeopardy that way. Some technical things here: The ship and model makers who worked on "Star Wars" 1977, and "The Empire Strikes Back", were the same ones who worked on this film. Namely Brian Johnson and Nick Alder. Bolaji Badejo, a Nigerian artist, did the suit work for the Alien. He was 7ft tall and slender. Lastly: I advise you to watch the sequel "Aliens" directed by James Cameron, and the prequel "Prometheus" directed by Ridley Scott. Don't bother with any of the other sequels or prequels. They're not as good as "Alien, Aliens" or "Prometheus.
What's fascinating is to re-watch the movie and to pay close attention to Ash. You can see him manipulating the crew every step of the way. Ash was in control of the mission, not Dallas. He would've gotten away with it if Ripley hadn't stuck to her guns after becoming acting captain.
the alien thought jones was a higher life form? why would it not go after it? that makes no sense. and prometheus was horrible. the didnt even try to maintain continuiity. hell, they didnt even land on the same planet.
Great point about appreciating movies more as an adult, I’ve rewatched so many movies from my childhood, and realized as a kid even as a teenager I didn’t appreciate it as much as I do now at 43 years old
I am so glad you are starting on the Alien franchise. Ripley is the most iconic character in sci-fi history! If you do continue the Alien series, I do recommend that you specifically watch the (extended versions) the remaining movies. Specifically the 2nd and 3rd film. A lot of good character development and backstory of Ripley. And yes, ignore the haters that say do not watch Alien 3. I still recommend it but, make sure that it's the extended version of Alien 3. It's called the "assembly cut". The theatrical cut is a mess.
@@toob1979 I disagree on that. At least with Alien 3 assembly cut, it tried to be its own movie with the complete different tone. It wasn't a regurgitation of the second film. The Terminator franchise is notorious for doing that. I rather have a sequel shoot for the moon and fail, then have a movie just be more of the same elements of its previous sequel.

Probably need to explain for folks who don’t have cats what Jonesy was doing when the Alien attacked Brett. Jonesy hissed at the Alien to show the Alien who is the top predator around here. (Cats are supremely confident in their hunting skills). Once that was settled Jonesy watched the Alien attack Brett and probably gave the Alien a B- rating on his pouncing ability, (to slow, no rabbit kicking) At the end on the way to the shuttle Jonesy indicated to the Alien he was lucky he was stuck in the cat carrier. The Alien realizing the truth in that statement left Jonesy alone. There was one perfect organism on that ship and it wasn’t the Alien.
I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this movie. I saw this movie when i was a LITTLE kid... i wasnt supposed to either, my parents put me to bed and I got out of bed and watched it from. The top of the stairs. Scared me shitless... for YEARS. I don't know if you two know this or not... The chestburster scene, they didn't tell ANY of the actors what was coming. When Cane started thrShing around, the director called cut and sent them all out. When they came back in John Hirt was IN the table with the dummy body splayed over the table. Everyone knew the alien was going to come out but not HOW. They had a dozen cameras set up to catch EVERYTHING and everyone's actual reactions. It's one of the best special effects AND reactions ever filmed. Veronica Cartwright screamed for real. Yaphet Kotto really grabbed a knife and Ian Holm grabbed his hand to keep him from staring someone. Lol. The funny thing is that the Xenomorph-Alien was played by a tall skinny kid named Bolaji Badejo.
Saw this at a drive-in when I was 12. I'm 55 now. It's still one of my favorites. The first sequel, Aliens (1986), is my all time number 1 favorite film to this day.
When I saw this in ‘79 the chest bursting scene was the most shocking, horrifying thing I’d ever seen at the movies. Totally unexpected. Felt Ike I’d seen a car wreck.
I was 25. Went to the Premiere showing in Vancouver. Huge 70mm Screen. Theater was packed. Most of us thought this would be like Star Wars. Boy were we wrong........ Opening Music score and the hair on my arms stood up and a shiver ran down my spine. This ain't no Star Wars!!! What followed was two hours of absolute suspense and terror. At the Chest Burst scene, Popcorn and Drinks were flying through the Air. Several people ran from the Theater and some Ladies were in tears. After the Movie, we exited by a side door into a dark Alleyway. We were all stunned and very quiet. And this was so perfect .. a FRACKING Alley Cat jumps out from a Dumpster and scared ther living daylights out of us!!! Four 25 year old guys screaming like little girls.... LOL. It was awesome!!!! Dang you Jones!!!!
Watching Alien a TV monitor or even Big Screen TV does not do this movie justice. Watch it on a 70mm screen in a pitch dark theater with Surround sound... and it was a whole different perspective. Especially when there had never been anything made like this before. Alien, Aliens, The Thing, Predators... those were good Times for Sci Fi Movies. Nikki and Steve. If you have not seen Forbidden Planet you must do so. And take in mind when it was made..... 1956.
If you noticed anything that seemed sexual in this movie, it was probably intentional. It’s sort of a staple of H.R. Giger that his work has subtle sexual undertones that are designed to make you feel uncomfortable, even if you don’t consciously realize why you’re uncomfortable
one thing they never really touch on in these movies is the level of technology earth has developed. the moon they were on is roughly 39 LIGHT YEARS from earth. for the tug and refinery to make it back to earth in 10 months, they have to be traveling WAY faster than light. and theyve somehow accomplished this and avoided time dilation. also, they have artificial gravity. but honestly, i like the mystery. :) and on a personal note, im pissed that NO ONE apologized to ripley. lambert especially got what she deserved. and im glad you watched the director's cut. i need to get a copy.

Really entertaining for a movie making-of, and it's currently on RU-vid. My favorite detail is decorating the interior of the ship with real airplane parts to make it feel lived-in and believable
You guys have GOT to watch the Alien sequel "Aliens" next, while Alien is still fresh. It will blow you away. *IMPORTANT* Only watch the Theatrical Version (at least 1st/for the reaction vid). The Special Edition is CLUNKY, and loses a lot of suspense and momentum from the added scenes. The added scenes don't add much anyways. The editing for the Theatrical Version is SO much better. I’d recommend An American Werewolf in London. You get Amimatronics, Makeup special effects. John Landis written & directed Also if you can find it for moody atmospheric horror- The Company of Wolves. More make up special effects & animatronics. Neil Jordan directed. It’s an absolutely gorgeous film
Your conversation about space reminded me of what Dr McCoy said to Kirk in one of the Star Trek movies, that space was "disease and death cloaked in darkness and silence". He'd always bring that realism to all the wonder of space traveling adventure, like "hey this is a fun space trip we're on and all, but we could seriously die in so many ways out here if just one thing goes wrong on this starship"
I read a book once about the early days of the space program and one of the first astronauts used a similar metaphor: that if you think of vacuum as just the absence of air you'll underestimate it and it will kill you. Vacuum is like a thousand poison fingers exploring every square inch of your space suit, trying to find a way in to kill you.
Wow! I can’t believe that Lambert smacked Ripley like that. That scene only appears in the extended version. It was not in the theatrical release. Isn’t Ripley supposed to be a higher ranking officer than her? I wonder if she would have been charged with a crime had they all made it back to earth. If she had hit me like that, I probably would have gone off and clocked her one, especially seeing as how my character was simply following protocol.
One of my all-time favorites. Perfect sci-fi horror film. Jump into Aliens soon (the extended cut, for sure). James Cameron modifies it enough to make it fresh and turns it from sci-fi horror into sci-fi action.
Amazing classic. Greatness HAS no expiration date folks. Top 25 horror AND science fiction film of all time. Love this film so very much. To me I like it better then the also amazing sequel ALIENS which is more action genre this went more horror.
Fun fact the chestburster scene was a genuine reaction from the cast to the point they had no idea why the film crew were wearing rain coats on the day to avoid the 'blood' spatter and the guy who plays Parker shut himself in his room after 😂
You just watched the greatest movie ever created alongside Godfather part 2 for the first time? I'm surprised. Alien is a masterpiece unlike any other.
Remember that it was Ash that opened the airlock door against Ripley's orders.. Ash who had replaced Dallas's regular Science Officer 2 days before the Nostromo's departure, with a special order to bring back the lifeform...
Didn't see it in the theater, unfortunately. I was 3 at the time. But after I eventually saw it, at around 10 y.o., alone, I made damn sure to not stick my toes out from under the duvet anymore from then on. 😀
I was 9 when it came out. My sister was 7. Rated R, but our parents took us to see it anyway. Soooo glad they did, it's still my #1 favorite to this day.
Decades of watching both films, and I never noticed the coffee maker they used for Mr. Fusion in the background. Apparently it is a " Krups Coffee grinder model number 223A, marketed under the name Coffina." Thank you Nikki!
