CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Crawling through the vents, Dallas (Tom Skerritt) meets his untimely end.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"In space, no one can hear you scream." A close encounter of the third kind becomes a Jaws-style nightmare when an alien invades a spacecraft in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic. On the way home from a mission for the Company, the Nostromo's crew is woken up from hibernation by the ship's Mother computer to answer a distress signal from a nearby planet. Capt. Dallas's (Tom Skerritt) rescue team discovers a bizarre pod field, but things get even stranger when a face-hugging creature bursts out of a pod and attaches itself to Kane (John Hurt). Over the objections of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), science officer Ash (Ian Holm) lets Kane back on the ship. The acid-blooded incubus detaches itself from an apparently recovered Kane, but an alien erupts from Kane's stomach and escapes. The alien starts stalking the humans, pitting Dallas and his crew (and cat) against a malevolent killing machine that also has a protector in the nefarious Company.

The only flaw in the script is, even if everyone else dies, how is Ash going to corral the beast and get it back to Earth? I mean, without it tearing him apart too? Or will he just program the ship to head back to Earth and then die and hope the thing still survives when it arrives back on Earth or in orbit? Or is the company sending out a rescue ship? And how does the company know any real details about the xenomorph and/or the derelict ship, and all that? These are questions that have gone unanswered.

You know what makes the genius of the building tension in this scene even better? The fact you see Dallas, who's ordinarily very calm, collected, and in control, finally start to crack. When he says he wants to get the hell out of there, you can hear in his voice (brilliantly acted) that he is absolutely terrified, and as a viewer, you pick up on that and can't help but feel that terror growing even more. The scene builds organically to a well-earned and masterfully executed jump scare that leaves you feeling drained after.

An absolutely brilliantly-done scene that should be used in every film school class on how to do a suspenseful scene. That dark, cramped claustrophobic space Dallas is in, Goldsmith' ominous music, Skerritt's brilliant acting where he's trying to conceal his rising panic , the menacing, advancing Atari-like blip, and of course, that hideous monster popping up like that...as they say, it's what you don't see that scares you more than what you do...Kudos to Ridley Scott...

Frederick Schminke He was not on the ladder. At the beginning of the video he steps off of the ladder into the passageway. It was a good defensive position because all of the access hatches were sealed of in the upper duct as Dallas moved forward. He knew the alien wouldn't be coming from that direction. He didn't see the alien on the level he was on, so that leaves one obvious answer.

In the novelisation, Dallas steps out in to a large air-shaft and makes his way across a gantry to the other side, stopping midway and not realising the Alien is right beneath him. Because of this, only one blip appears on Lambert’s tracker. When Dallas moves on; narrowly avoiding being grabbed by his ankle, the Alien remains in its spot. Causing A second blip appear that Lambert puts down as a malfunction. By the time Dallas realises it’s not, the Alien grabs him and pulls him off the gantry.

I kinda prefer the sneakier, slower and more strategic Xenomorph of 1979, because it moves so slow but is still intimidating enough to send you into a state of suspended fright, much like the characters of this film. I do also like the faster, hyperactive Xenomorphs of 1986 onwards, but I feel less scared of them attitude wise due to their somewhat clumsy movements, the '79 Alien literally looks like it plans each step of it's movements before the kill.

@G E T R E K T 905 Honestly disappointed in this comment section, "elitist" Alien lovers lmfao. Alien is the better movie and makes the beast to be a more thought out and skillful killer than its 1986 counter part. Aliens is a fantastic movie and is a master piece in its own respectful rights, HOWEVER, it ultimately killed the franchise by making Big Chap and the gang out to be giant space cockroaches for our protagonists to shoot at ruining the mystery and allure of the creature rather quickly. The graceful and slow movements of Bolaji Badejo with the sexual undertones and its disgustingly alluring reproduction cycle gave the Alien such a mystique behind it. With only quick tense moments of the creature on screen it kept a thin blanket over Big Chap making him out to be a eldritch space beast that no one knew much of anything about. The original ending to Alien had Ripley killed and Big Chap reproducing her voice to be used for a distress signal, "This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off." It gives the Alien so much more character than the mindless insects from Aliens. The Queen in itself proves that the Aliens had devolved into a large scale ant colony with her having the only sign of ACTUAL intelligence from the creatures in 1986. (Elevator scene, Sneaking onto the dropship, etc) On a side note I think the idea that the Queen intentionally hitched a ride on the elevator is great, and was what I hoped for from all the xenos in that they show intelligence to that of human level in quick learning and adaptability. "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? Perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility."

Notice that most of the audio in this scene is diegetic (organic to the movie). The beeping, the frantic screaming, the roar of the Alien, the static. It's not telling you to be scared (looking at you, modern ghost films). It's presenting you with a situation in which you can't help but be scared.

Actually, you'd have much better chances in a narrow ventshaft than out in the open. The alien itself also has trouble moving thru narrow shafts (the novel also describes this), and it has only melee attacks. The best idea would have been to confront the alien in a very cramped space, where most of its abilities are useless.

To Lambert telling him to get the hell out of there, it’s moving right towards him- the blip back- now coming closer and closer to the Captain- The hopeless musical build up..Dallas panicking, all but throwing himself down the vent shaft’s ladders, almost forgetting his weapon... Turning one way, then another... The sudden and abrupt screech of the Alien flicking its arms out towards Dallas- JAWS AGAPE.. Fabulous scene among many in this movie. Veronica Cartwright’s (Lambert) voice tension is so effective, as she evokes that nervousness, trying to stay calm, but teetering more and more towards panic and fear for Dallas. She was brilliant in this, as were the rest of the cast. Dallas is so business-like and no nonsense as a character that when he finally says he wants to get the hell out of there, it tops off your fear perfectly.

SenorPredo - The Government Sucks she's considered the star now because she's the heroine of the franchise but when this movie was released and watched on first view - nobody expected the tough chick to survive. Back then it was always the men who were the stars and last 'man' standing! Besides, Tom Skeritt was given top billing. Sigourney was a little known Broadway actress at the time and this was her first BIG movie. So naturally, the viewer would expect Dallas to survive and go toe to toe with the Alien by the end.

Indeed. It's standard practice in Science Fiction, especially classical science fiction, for the leading man/captain to be the last man standing. Just watch Forbidden Planet as a prime example of the forebearer to this kind of a movie. Ripley was chosen to be a woman basically as a novelty.

in fact, Sigourney Weaver was the least known of all the actors......Ian Holm, Tom Skerrit, John Hurt and Veronica Cartwright plus Kotto had more CV than Sigourney........I think this was her debut not only in movies, but also in acting..............this created a lot of hard feelings towards Sigourney.........this is also part of why the movie is so well acted........they weren't acting........they were really treating Sigourney like a low life scum, as in the script. This is what a Director and Casting agent do when casting actors.........cuddos for them.

@@monalisasmile6629 True. I saw Alien when it was released. I remember my parents talking about Tom Skerritt being the star and they killed him off. No one expected it.

Got to be the greatest scene in Sci-Fi horror ever. Terrifying. You're in there with Dallas. You know what's coming. Fantastic.

One of the greateast details of this jumpscare is when "Its moving toward you" and Dallas move down to "evade" the alien but the sensor shows the movemont only in one way no matter if the alien is up or down so Dallas accidently die thinking the alien was in his level

Among ~40 year old movies, I think among us jokes fit best with the thing (1982)

I suppose "Dallas is taken" would be a more fitting name. This movie really holds up over the years. I hope we get off the tween sci fi kick in Hollywood and start making movies for the adults again.

Lambert and Ripley deserved best supporting and best actress Oscars. And the movie Best Picture. It was so beautifully complete

One of the scariest scenes of all time. The sound the alien makes at the end coupled with the static and sound of the headset microphone, chills.

the portal opening and closing repeatedly behind him, the shadows dancing off the walls, the moisture and alien saliva, all heightened the tension superbly. then the alien disappearing off the tracker making him wait, just a great scene. would have loved to have seen them actually make it all the way through with the mission and him not dying, but the Alien is now behind all of his barricades and it would all have been done for naught. btw, Ash just standing there smiling smuggly while the static buzzes is perfect for building up the mistrust in him by the audience.

May Bolaji Badejo who actually played the ALIEN R.I.P. Passed away 12/22/1992 age 39 from sickle cell anaemia. His only film role. He did a fantastic job playing the ALIEN.👍👍👍👍👍

Veronica Cartwright's (Lambert) performance is honestly so underrated in this movie! She really captures the fear throughout the film, the desperation, the slow anguish of everyone losing it as they realize they're doomed... apparently she was initially cast as Ripley but she nailed it as Lambert! (And I think Sigourney Weaver was better for Ripley anyway.) She deserved her Saturn Award, that's for sure! Why she didn't become a bigger actress after this is beyond me (she was also in The Birds as well, apparently, you think that would have secured her major stardom).
