The so-called "director's cut" is no such thing. It was a marketing thing by the studio that they added for the Alien Quadrilogy in 2003. It adds deleted scenes that contradict Aliens and an alien reproductive cycle that doesn't show up ever again, so it's basically non-canon. Ridley Scott prefers the theatrical cut, too. It's the opposite case with Aliens. The special edition of Aliens is the better one, the original story, the preferred version by fans and by Cameron.

@@miller-joel how so? did you not watch the other Ridley Scott movies which show the alien can take on other forms in Prometheus and Covenant. So yeah.. many would disagree really. If ****SPOILER ALERT*** do not read if you have not seen the other alien movies. David created the Aliens.. so to say that one wouldn't turn into some form of a Queen to reproduce in some form. Is not that crazy!

You have to remember that, when this came out in 1979, the tropes of a final girl and a 4th act were not yet a thing. So Ripley being the lone survivor and the "Big Chap" showing up on the shuttle were totally new things for audiences back then.

To me, the three major ratchets of the fear in this movie are, 1) the eerie soundtrack as they explore the crashed ship, 2) the first leap of the facehugger from the egg into the helmet, and 3) Veronica Cartwright’s fast panting and abrupt scream as Ripley hears this in the hallway. These generate a ton of dread that for instance, the chest bursting can’t because the creature is too puppet-like and well lit at that point. The best scares are overheard or implied in the shadows.

Fun little trivia, apparently when they did the chest burster scene, they didn't want to do multiple takes, so they went over kill on the blood and didn't warn Veronica Cartwright that she was going to be in the blood firing line... Her reaction of terror was genuine fear and shock, no acting. I kinda feel bad for her.
@Momo_Minomo
@Momo_Minomo 19 дней назад
Didn't warn any of them lol. Only John Hurt knew what was going to happen so he could act convincingly like a man who'd just been chest-bursted. Apparently they had to pause filming for a few hours after this scene because all the actors needed time to get the actual stinking animal meat and fake blood off them and just lay the hell down for the sake of their poor nerves.

Glad you watched the original theatrical cut on this one. Ridley Scott has said that this is actually his preferred version. The so-called "director's cut" was put together mainly for a DVD box set that was going to include alternate versions of all (at the time) four Alien movies. For ALIENS, it's a bit of a toss-up for me. The "Special Edition" does restore a bit of backstory for Ripley that makes the story more resonant, but it also adds some frankly unnecessary scenes that bog the pace down a bit. The theatrical cut moves a little better, IMO.
@MysteriousMrL
@MysteriousMrL 25 дней назад
The added value of that one Ripley scene and its impact on the film overall more than makes up for any pacing issues, in my personal opinion. Especially for first time viewers who don't have the theatrical cut as a point of reference anyway.

some fun facts most of the alien gross bits believ it or not is actually edible. or least when cooked. The part where Kane looks into the open egg and there's that wet fleshy bit with the white gooey bit that's actually raw chicken breast with I forget what it's called but it's a white substance that looks like fat but it's something else its like a fleshy webbing that was also added. And the face hugger when they find it dead and Ash is picking at it what your looking at is actually clam meat that's been lightly doctored up with a bit of food coloring... also in the 80's a fill called Spaceballs would bring the actor who played Kane for a cameo to relive his chest popping scene he even does an ad lip where he's liken" Oh no not again!" hinting his character is the same Kane that we saw in alien who somehow survive to have another alien baby once more lol.

Supposedly, the way the sequel got made was that James Cameron was pitching a movie to the studio (I think it was something related to "Spartacus") and the studio rejected him. But on his way out he struck up a conversation with the receptionist and they talked for a while about movies. When he was finally leaving, she blurted out, "Well, you could always do a sequel to Alien!" and this stuck in his head longer than he thought it would and worked on a treatment for it which eventually led to the movie getting greenlighted.

19:00 - that's a naval tradition ... yeeting the body out in the middle of the ocean I'm guessing Captain Dallas attended a seminar on "How to perform a yeeting-out ceremony in deep space" - a compulsory requirement for all Weylan-Yutani space captains Back in the day, it was very necessary ... several weeks from land, a fallen crew member would decompose and spread disease very quickly ... so commiting the body to the deep was turned almost into a better version of a regular burial ... but its true purpose was to make sure none of the other crew members got sick, which would be terminal for everybody - as they had no antibiotics, and one ship's surgeon who knew how to saw off limbs quickly, but f-all else! These days, having a "burial-at-sea" is actually considered to be a nice way to go, probably costs a fortune! I bet you any amount of money that Elon Musk has already made plans to have his body sent up in a rocket and ejected deep into space - to be the very first person to have their body deliberately yeeted into space! (such is his ego)

A bit of a lore dump and commentary for your commentary on the world of Alien... By the time of the movie, 2122, humanity has ventured out roughly 70 lightyears from Earth. The Nostromo was returning to Earth from a mining colony called Thedus that was 59 lightyears away. They awakened just outside the Zeta-2 Reticuli, 39 lightyears from Earth, so only about 1/3 of the way into their trip and making it possible that a human vessel could be stranded or in distress since it was roughly along their course between two points of civilization. 7:15 There is no "other ship". The Nostromo herself went down and what was left in orbit of the planet was just a refinery. 10:20 Engineers. 12:45 At no point did she tell them not to go. 10:46 I don't understand why people get mad about Ash telling them not to touch the chestburster when they have no idea what it's capable of, especially after messing with the facehugger had its acid blood melting through through two decks. 19:18 They didn't "shoot" Kane and it wasn't disrespectful. The airlock instantly depressurizing when it opened just jettisoned him. 20:25 They did have the prod. 38:48 Yep. Xenomorphs take on attributes of whatever host species. If you do delve further into the Alien and Predator franchises you'll see that at work. 39:10 Alien is in 2122, Romulus is set 20 years after, so 2142, and Aliens takes place in 2179. Romulus has lots of good Easter eggs for the whole Alien franchise that fans will notice.

Living critters - monsters - made their way back to the silver screen in 1979 after a hiatus of about 17 years or so . The producers of this film decided in 1979 to scare the living Jesus out of audiences when they made this film .

You guys should react to The Substance. The official trailer just came out and it looks wild!! Maybe the best trailer I’ve seen this year. It also premiered at Cannes and won best screenplay.

Although the correct order to watch these films is the same as their presentation, the proper order to understand them is "Prometheus", "Alien", and "Aliens". And to hell with the rest

I like Prometheus. it's not great , like the orig or maybe 2 nd > but it is far far better than the rest. NEW Alien flick came out yesterday - I think it's timed to between # 1 &. # 2 ?

I personally Loved Prometheus, but whatever. It’s a prequel. Even though the director kept saying it wasn’t a prequel. The WORST Alien movie would have to be Alien Resurrection.

19:26 You've never heard of a burial at sea? What do you think sailors did when someone died? Keep the corpse around?

They’re laughing over the fact that no one said shit about him at the end then shot him out like a bullet, not because they didn’t keep his corpse on the ship.
