My first time watching Alien and it was an experience and a better movie than I expected. Ripley has become one of my favorite final girls! Let me know if you would like for me to watch more of the Alien franchise.
I WISH I could experience this absolute masterpiece for the first time again. I can't, but, watching other people see it for the first time will have to do, and, it never ceases to be entertaining.
I was too young to fully appreciate this film when I saw it for the first time on VHS (or was it Betamax? I forget.), plus I'm autistic, so my emotional sensitivity is rather dialed down. Didn't stop me from enjoying the film, though, not the first time and at no time thereafter.😊
My first experience seeing this was unforgettable. I was 13 in 1979. I went with my best friend, his mom and his sister and her and I had a bit of a mutual crush. Also I had Fundamentalist Christian parents that would even let me watch a film with curse words in it. So I was totally unprepared for cosmic horror. I was full of the thrill of Sci-Fi like Star Wars and Close Encounters. I was expecting that here. And what I got was bone chilling horror beyond my wildest nightmares. This film put things into my subconscious that are still there. The audience lost their shit on several occasions. The chestburster scene made people gag, retch, vomit, run away, scream. And Valerie, the sister, ended up in my lap, arms around my neck in a deathgrip crying into my shirt collar. You gotta understand I have never been that physically close to a girl in my entire life and it being one I was attracted to, it gave me all kinds of feelings. Imagine that, juxtaposed against the absolute horrors I saw on the screen. Culminating in, for me the worst scene in the film, Parker and Lamberts deaths. What an experiece it all was for me. Unforgettable. And now I get to experience it all over again, watching folks like you watch it. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.
Isn't there something special about seeing a great movie for the first time? And you're right, it is satisfying to watch others see your favorites for the first time too.
Hey, you need to give us more of your story! Did Valerie and you become a thing? What did your parents do when they learned you had watched Alien? And who did you go watch Aliens with?
@@billyturner1784 Hello. Val and I dated on and off later in our teenage years. We never became boyfriend and girlfriend, though she was the first girl I ever kissed. That happened about two-ish days after seeing the movie. My parents were not best pleased, especially when I had nightmares that culminated in a truly memorable one, when I "woke up" (But really hadn't) and the Xeno came out of my closet to grab me the exact same way he did Dallas in the film. My screams woke them up at about 2 am lol. I saw Aliens with my then girlfriend Melissa and my Dad the night it opened.
I worked at an indoor paintball center here in England back in the 80s. They had a laser tag arena upstairs and they'd bought some of the alien set from shepperton studios where they filmed it. It was the walls of the alien space ship. I hated going up there on my own to do anything. It creeped the shit out of me. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
@@SamuelBlack84 yer, it was in an old American base gymnasium. Unfortunately it was demolished and a big sainsbury's and retail park was built on the land. I have no idea what happened to the set. Shame really, it was a great urban warfare paintball centre.
"It's got a great defense mechanism... you don't dare kill it..." Classic sci-fi horror. The tension is so thick, you will need a sharp steak knife in order to cut it. The voice of "Mother" is so iconic, in my honest opinion. There's something unnerving about a cold feminine voice counting down to your death. It wasn't until GLaDOS that we rediscovered that a computerized female voice can be absolutely creepy. Fun Fact: In H.R. Giger's original illustrations that inspired the look of the Alien, the creature had eyes. For the movie, Giger insisted that the creature have no eyes, thus giving the bleak appearance of a cold and emotionless beast that hunts by smell. Real Guts Fact: The dead facehugger that Ash (Ian Holm) autopsies was made using fresh shellfish, four oysters, and a sheep kidney to re-create the internal organs. Filming had to be done quickly because the organic material would go bad very fast under the studio lights. Bloody Solution Fact: It was conceptual artist Ron Cobb who came up with the idea that the Alien should bleed acid. This came about when Dan O'Bannon ran into a wall with the screenplay on how to handle the last half of the movie. He needed a good reason for why the crew members don't just shoot the thing and kill it but still not make it an indestructible monster that can't be killed. The acid blood was the idea that solved this problem.
I lost it at “just gonna have to Football Tackle it or something now”. Great reaction. Most reactors are confused when Ash’s head gets knocked off but you knew straight away “he’s an android” Much like you knew something was up with the dog in the Thing. Nice to see a reactor who gets the genre.
@@ambybambibooalso one of the few people that recognize the alien is in her way of the life shuttle and that’s why she is trying to stop the self destruct, to give her another full 10 mins and hopefully it’ll be gone. I was so happy, you’d be surprised how many people just go “what is she doing why is she changing her mind”😂😂
Ripley is my favorite character ever in movies, so well written (written for a male actor originally) and played perfectly by Weaver who just naturally exudes intelligence, competence and guts.
That's the first time I've heard the Alien referred to as a "Bondage Demon".😆 It's not too far off! I've seen this about 500 times so I like it. My dad took me to see the sequel when I was way too young and I loved it. Aliens is definitely worth watching. I'll never forget it because it was a double feature 'Aliens...then The Fly' 🤣
I showed this film to my dad an age ago. It's the only time I've ever seen him becoming genuinely disturbed by a film - more so than I ever would have expected, to be frank. He couldn't sleep that night, muttering about the film being "horrifying". As for myself, I never considered it _that_ scary, although it most certainly creates a lot of suspense. Scott's use of lighting is something I appreciate in particular! And of course Ellen Ripley, a very believable protagonist, intelligent and courageous, but still able to feel anger, frustration, and fear. Sigourney Weaver's performance as Ripley is so burned into my mind that whenever I think of Weaver, the image of her as Ripley in 1978 (when the film was shot) always pops up in my head.
You're the first person I've seen watch this film for the first time, and at the moment where Parker smashes Ash's head off, you instantly understood he was an android! Most people don't get that straight away.
The actress who played Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) was also the little girl in Hitchcock's "the Birds". Her little sister Angelica played Penny on "Lost in Space" in the 1960's...
She actually auditioned for Ripley and not Lambert, which I think would have been a different film! She is absolutely amazing at expressing fear and paranoia though, anyone else would again, make it a very different film.
Yes, watch the second film, called "Aliens"!! You will be blown away! It's a James Cameron film (he was the director of Terminator, T2, Titanic, and many other greats) and he created one of the best sequels in film history!
Veronica Cartwright who played Lambert was in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 suspense movie "The Birds". Actress Dakota Johnson's grandmother Tippi Hedren was in it too.
You should watch H R Giger. The making of Alien. He designed and built most of the sets. The alien ship, etc. You’d love it. H R Giger is right up your alley. Love your reactions. 👍👍
2:08 "This is a _commercial_ ship; not a _rescue_ ship." "Thank you. I'm with this guy." Yeah. So am I. I mean, the _Nostromo_ is a _freighter._ It was designed for hauling _ore._ Now we have freighters at sea, _nowadays._ We also have _rescue_ ships. They follow _very_ different designs and are crewed by very different kinds of _people._
1. Tagline "In space no one can hear you scream" 2. Best explosion EVER 😱🏆💯(including Star Wars) 3. Dallas/Tom Skerritt also played Viper in "Top Gun" and Strawberry in "Up in Smoke". 4. Brett/Harry Dean Stanton had a very healthy resume. We lost him recently.😇 5. Ridley Scott is also known for directing the original "Bladerunner". 6. The hanging bodies weren't in the original release. They didn't expect a sequel.
I was 5 years old when I saw this movie for the first time. It set the path for my taste in movies early in my life. And it gave me nightmares. For a long time.
Seen your counter reach 3k today. One of them is me. One of the best editors I've seen, very smooth & all the important bits are there. I wish you lots of success, I'm sure you'll achieve it.
You keep mentioning that they should throw Kane off the ship. Keep in mind that Dallas and Kane are friends. They've worked together for years. Only Ripley and Ash are new here; the rest all know each other from previous flights. Usually, we try to save our friends rather than just throwing outside to die. Now, if they knew they were in a horror movie and that Kane was definitely going to die anyway, they might have done it. Or maybe be more humane and freeze him instantly so whatever he's going to die from will freeze with him - maybe earth doctors could save him. But they didn't, so they did the best they could to save their friend. And the only one who might have seen the danger coming was Ash, the science officer, and we know why he didn't stop it.
@@SamuelBlack84 Or, they were in shock. Dallas just lost his best friend and maybe holds himself to blame. Ripley didn't really know him and was still angry about Ash. Lambert is easily rattled. Brett never says much anyway. Ash is a freaking robot and doesn't care; Kane was expendable anyway. Parker, well, when everybody is is silent and/or angry, it's just as well keep keep silent too. And Kane didn't have much else to say right then. Also, all of them suddenly had a lot on their mind, like "will we all die" and "how do we catch a monster" and "no way I want to sleep with this monster running around and I don't want to be awake for 10 months either." Ultimately, I think it's still good writing to have them each dealing with inner demons while a literal demon might be running around their ship after killing one of their number.
AH yes, the movie of my nightmares, i was 10 in 1979 when i went with my parents to watch the movie in the theater... scared the lights out of me for weeks...
Space was something exciting to me prior to seeing this movie as a kid but forever after it was something that could be scary too. Loved your reaction to this 1979 classic and I would be excited to see you watch the sequels, especially the second movie.
Alien, Jaws and Poltergeist were my favorite 70's "horror" movies. I like some blood and gore on occasion in a movie but suspense is my favorite will always me my favorite part of horror.
I’ve watched this movie many times and recently introduced it to my son -“Dad will everybody die in every movie you show me?” And I can’t believe I watched another reaction to it but you were great and hilarious 😂. Yes Ridley is a bad-ass. Your instincts about what not to do in these situations are spot on.
Some of the most creative film makers were involved in the making of this film in 1978-79,and she says,"this man is nuttier than a squirrel turd"incredible but funny.
It’s fantastic. I saw it in a cinema back in 2014 (a 35th anniversary cinematic re-release) and by and large everything still looked great despite how far visual effects had progressed in the intervening years. 🙂
February 7, 1981, Loring AFB, Maine: Me, three of my friends from fifth and sixth grade, and my folks watched Alien when it premiered on Showtime. Every one of us was scared directly to hell. It ran at 9 p.m., and again sometime early in the morning. My friends spent the night, and when it played again in the wee hours someone asked, “Want to watch it again?” The answer: _HELL NO_ I’ve definitely seen it more than any other film. It’s so damn great.
16:57 "I will give it to this man; he's brave. Because there ain't no way in hell..." Yes, Dallas is brave. But he also has no choice. There is nowhere for the crew to hide. They can't just live on the ship with this alien running around eating them whenever it wants to for the 10 months it takes to get home. They are trapped. They have to do something. Sitting around saying "Ain't no way" just means they all die. Sometimes, bravery is just desperation - when we have no choice, when there is only one way to survive, we all find the courage fast enough. Or we die.
Don't forget the the sequel aliens directed by James Cameron and then if you have not seen predator 1, 2 and the prequel pray and then alien vs predator the first one only.
Originally Ridley’s character was written for a man and it flipped into one of cinema’s greatest female heroes. Aliens is different but one of films best sequels.
Ripley the best female bad ass role model. I was around at this time and believe me there werent many. If any. Ripley became cinematic legend. Shes even better in the sequel Aliens when james cameron took the reigns. Aliens and terminator 2 are two of the best sequels ever made, besting the original and thats rare. Both james cameron. He may be an egomaniac but he brought two of the best female action heroes to life. Ripley i think #1.
For the first 7 minutes of this video you probably voiced the notion that space is scary and they should not go outside, investigate the signal, enter the alien ship, investigate the eggs, etc. You even said Kane is "nuttier than a squirrel turd" which is a delightfully colorful turn of phrase. A few thoughts: 1. These people live in space for a living. Me, I'm afraid of Florida. Gators and pythons everywhere. But I guess people live there just fine. The crew of this ship are truck drivers in space. Their job was to go out to wherever this refinery used to be and tow it back to earth. Space is not scary for them, just like Florida is not scary to the people who live there. 2. This trip has them spending nearly 4 years for the round trip. Their contract says that if they do NOT investigate, they get zero pay for 4 years. I don't know about you, but if my boss told me tomorrow that my company was going to NOT pay me for 4 years of work, I'd be broke, in debt, and living on the street in a cardboard box under an overpass. I would do quite a lot to avoid this fate, including investigating an alien ship. 3. Eggs are harmless. No human being has ever, ever been hurt by an egg or anything that came out of one. Well, maybe if you throw one really fast at a human face you might hurt him, but these are just sitting there, harmlessly. In fact, if you got a time machine and went back 65 million years and found a Tyrannosaurus Rex egg, and it hatched, that hatchling T-Rex would be unable to hurt you, at least for a few weeks or so - and that's plenty of time to put it in a cage or run away or whatever you need to do. 4. Your point about fearing whatever laid eggs that big is a good one. Kane looked around, has pretty good sight lines in all directions and didn't see any egg-layers. If one shows up, he can have his friends pull him back up through the ceiling. Summary: These guys have almost no reason to be afraid. It's reasonable to assume their life would be in far more danger in Florida's Everglades than it is here. Except... This is a horror movie so of course bad things will happen and Kane will, in fact, be the first human ever hurt by something hatching from an egg. Maybe if we told them they were in a horror movie, they would have gone straight back to earth and lived in that cardboard box - at least they'd be alive. Otherwise, all their actions are justified, reasonable, and definitely not squirriel turds.
19:35 "What is all this milky stuff? Is it his fuel?" Probably not. If it runs on fuel, then it has a motor. Motors are noisy. Nobody would think a buzzing, vibrating person was really a person. Most fluids are bad for mechanical and especially electrical devices. Ash is both. The only fluids machines really need are lubricants and coolants and the only fluid any electronics need is coolant. My guess is that this milky stuff is one or both of those things.
The sequel, "Aliens," is one of the best sequels for any series. Beyond that, you can look at other comments, but you won't find anyone to tell you not to watch the direct sequel, "Aliens."
Hi, i've just discovered your channel and I've subscribed. It's great you've seen this sci-fi classic, pleased react to it's awesome sequel Aliens (1986) as soon as you can.
I prefer cats to dogs. When you live longer with cats you understand their love. They have a lot of love, but they show it hard. Alien is one of my all time favorite movies for me. All parts of a series have a little or a lot of interesting things in them. But the general opinion, which also has a point for me, is that Alien 1 and Alien 2 are the strongest, which I support. Whatever; very good response. You think deeply, which shows your concentration in the story. That's cool to see. Also you predicted some of the actions before you saw them. You think logically, that's also good to see, and it also shows that you're focused on the story.
This is the start in movies...u see anyone drinking milk, beware! I would call this sci-fi, not horror. The Thing is definitely both! This, the thing, and Bladerunner,(Scott also did Bladerunner!😮😮😮) are the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Maybe add Tron, and it's sequel, here. No CGI, all models, special effects and practical effects! There is a huge tie-in here. In Prometheus, the prequel to all movies, the alien here on the ship with his chest blown out. These are Engineers. A race of beings who seed life on planets and if they don't like how the life is progressing they seed another life to wipe out the remaining then they destroy each other. Engineers created humans Aliens and supposedly Predators and gave humans the technology for Replicants and Terminators! Also Tyrell Corp, Cyberdyne Systems, Weyland Corp are all related. Dallas, in a brief view of his resume, u see he worked for Tyrell Corp 😮 that's Bladerunner! Cyberdyne Systems did tech work for Tyrell Corp! And Weyland Corp did industrial and flight operations for Tyrell Corp!! Also Cameron did the sequels for alien and Terminator!!! And of course, Arnold was in predator and Terminator! And Reese, Bill Paxton and the Mexican chica both in terminator 2 and Aliens. Also lance hennrikson is the asst police chief in terminator, and bishop in, Aliens😮😮😮!!! The old white guy here is Harry Dean Stanton. Been in every movie made since the silent era!😅 This , Dillinger, outsiders, Red Dawn, Godfather 2, Green Mile, and others. Pro tip, the first death scene the director and actor didn't tell the rest of the actors, what was going to happen with the actor, Scott wanted real reactions from the other actors 😮😮😮The real horror is, when ur being taken over, u don't know it!....just like in, The Thing!
Wow, I caught your channel in its baby stages! Cool! And you've already watched 2 of my top 5 horror movies. Remaining would be The Exorcist 1&3 and The Ruins.
@@ambybambiboo my father warned me off of the first exorcist sequel (so exorcist 2), said it was just flashbacks of the first one. I never saw it. But the third I've seen tons of times. George C Scott and Brad Douriff. *chef's kiss*
It’s crazy how this film and it’s sequel inspired the design and style of many video games! Glad I got to watch this in a theater recently! I hope they re release Aliens so I can watch that on the big screen!
@@ambybambiboo yes it is! The exterior shots of the ship and planet were so cool! And the final battle was weirdly claustrophobic but so grand at the same time. At least for me, that’s how it felt.
15:18 "How the hell did it get that big so fast?" I agree. We don't know how long it's been. Maybe they've been looking for the missing alien for weeks or months. But probably not. In fact, it's probably the same day or next day from when Kane died. So this alien grew from the size of a rabbit to the size of a horse in about a day, with no food. An actual horse starts out bigger than a rabbit and needs a minimum of 4 years to grow to the size of a horse, not just one day. And the amount of food it eats is about 2400 pounds of food just during the first year, and that's only 1/4 of the time it takes to be as big as this alien. It's a monster. It doesn't follow the rules of earthly horses or earthly biology. But that much growth, that fast, with no food? That seems impossible even by monster standards.
@@Sandy-dd4le Alan Dean Foster is a great writer. He was given the script of the movie even before it came out. He spotted some flaws, like the alien growing without food, and added details like the alien breaking into food stores to make the novel more plausible than the movie. Don't get me wrong. I love the movie. It's one of my favorites ever. But even if it had a 24/7 all you can eat buffet, it's still biologically impossible for that much growth that quickly. It's monster movie magic. Which is fine. You just can't apply real world logic to monster movie magic.
@@blakewalker84120 I get you, it is weird little inconsistency. I think from the movie we are supposed to assume it's a remarkably fast growing species, which does make a vague movie type sense if you think about their life cycle. We're spoiling the movie magic here! :)
hey amber I really enoy your reacts to good horror classics. they bring back happy memories from when i first reacted to them. alien 1979 was one of them. if you take suggestions I'd love to recommend these four great horror films from the 80's and one from the early 90's The 1986 film " Demons" The 1984 " Rats: night of terror " the 1986 " Critters" and the early 90's horror the 1991 " The people under the stairs"
If I was in his position, I'd send him flying out in Outerspace. No way would I have let the Alien on my ship. Captain or not, then again, my instincts would have kicked in, if I had seen that thing on his face, I don't care if I didn't know what it is, I wouldn't want to chance it, I'm not stupid enough to get myself killed over money, so I'd run, and I would probably have run for the escape pod and left everyone behind who's all stupid enough to trust Ash and this whole thing, I'd grab the cat and leave. I don't care if that makes me look like a coward, I'd want to survive.
Alien is one of the greatest films of all time; regardless of genre. I’ve written several pieces on the design of Alien. Had Dan O’Bannon not shown Ridley Scott Swiss artist HR Giger’s book ‘Necronomicon’, who knows what we could’ve ended up with. Scott was familiar with Giger’s work due to him being hired to work on Scott’s failed adaptation of Dune. Nothing will beat the time I got to see a special 70mm IMAX print of Alien…it looks absolutely stunning!! Fun Facts: The scene where Parker & Lambert die was originally much longer & Veronica Cartwright has even stated in interviews that what you see is a lot different. Basically, if you notice, as the tail goes between Lamberts legs, it isn’t actually Lambert; her costume featured cowboy boots…& the feet we see are actually Brett’s. Also, there’s a little know cut of the film that features Ripley finding Parker dead & Lambert naked from the waist down, suspended. Cartwright went on record & said that she spent part of the shoot suspended in a harness; but the scene was cut down to what we see in the theatrical cut. The Nostromo set was all connected; as it would’ve been had the craft been real. That combined with the fact it had a really low ceiling helps add to the hot, claustrophobic atmosphere & this helped drive the performance’s. Please ensure you watch the directors cut of Aliens & then onto the Assembly Cut of Alien 3. There’s not much to say about Aliens other than it’s just about perfect. Alien 3 however is something of a flawed masterpiece. It was David Fincher’s directorial debut & due to studio meddling, rewrites etc, we were left with a semi coherent film that to this day Fincher refuses to talk about. The assembly cut, fixes a lot of problems & several cast members returned to record enhanced dialogue for the reintroduced scenes. Alien 3 still divides fans due to its bleak, post apocalyptic look. But it’s the perfect ending to an excellent trilogy of films. Fun Fact: The Nostromo model was restored a few years back & sold at auction to a certain NZ director for $500’000!!!
@@ambybambiboo the directors cut of Aliens is absolutely amazing; several of the cut scenes honestly shouldn’t have been removed from the theatrical cut. Please, please ensure you go with the Assembly Cut of Alien 3….whilst not perfect, it’s as close to David Fincher’s vision as we’ll ever get….& a fitting end to the trilogy.
I probably won't get an answer, but that is okay. At one point you said something that reminded me of what several of the women in my family who lived in lower Alabama said a lot: "Lord have mercy". It was the deliver too, not just the words. Did you grow up anywhere near lower Alabama?

This film is like a fine wine. It gets better with age and every viewing. After you watch Aliens, I'd check out 2012's Prometheus and stop there. Don't waste your time on Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, or Alien: Covenant. Great review!
I was 5 my dad snuck me in to see it and to this day still gives me the hee bee Jee bees but the sequel is the all time best so it’s one of the best character arcs and no dis but I’m tired of hearing no strong women in movies Ripley is the most badass woman in fiction not counting Sarah conner
Don't forget to watch the "special edition/ extented cut" for its sequel "ALIENS" wich is even better than the first one and probably the best one of the franchise. And is as scary and stressful than the first one ;)
I think the white stuff coming out of Ash when he gets hit is hydraulic fluid, to make the robot parts run (yes they did use milk and yoghurt which really stank after a while) 🤢 and the alien gets big... fast ! oh and Jones is best character :) 🐈🐾
Although never specified in the film, I’ve always presumed the milky fluid inside of Ashe to be a white hydraulic fluid of sorts. There is definitely an audience psychological purpose for the fluid, however, as evidenced by the way it looks covering Ashe’s face. The film is replete with sexual cues. Which are based on production designer, H.R. Giger’s (RIP) ,now famous surrealist drawings. (As depicted in his book, ‘Necronomicon’. Google him, to see that work. It’s both excellent and disturbing at once.) For instance, in the film, the head shape of the alien itself is phallic. The crew enters the alien ship through what look like a female vulva, which then helps roughly explain the shape of the ship as a woman’s pelvis with a pair of legs. The alien embryo implantation is an oral rape. Ripley bending over in low-cut panties on the shuttle is no coincidence either. Etc. As far as the use of Giger’s art style in the film by director Ridley Scott, the sexual cues are intentionally used as a tool to heighten the horror of the viewing audience. Fear and sexual arousal both increase the involuntary ‘on-alert’ status of the human nervous system. Subliminal arousal then magnifies the audience’s fear reaction, the real purpose of it’s use, without it coming across as obviously sexual. Genius.
Everyone who is familiar with the "Aliens" franchise knows that you need to watch films not in order, but in chronological order of events. So: 1) Prometheus (2012) 2) Alien: Covenant - Prologue: Link (2017, Short) 3) Alien: Covenant - Prologue: The Last Supper (2017, short) 4) Alien: Covenant (2017) (full-length) 5) Alien (1979) 6) Aliens (1986) 7) Alien 3 (1992) 8) Alien 4: Resurrection (1997) "Alien vs. Predator" - not included in the franchise. This is a speculation on popular characters from third-party directors. I must say that the text version of the story about the Aliens is much more interesting. The films removed a lot of plots and dialogues that give an idea of what is actually happening and the deep meaning of the story. From the movies, we can hardly understand what is happening. Probably from the third viewing - you start to put the puzzle together and guess something. And all because important dialogues and characters have disappeared from the films, but they are in the book.
Not a film, but I’d include _Alien: Isolation_ just because it is so damn good. Finishing that game twice was so stressful it took a couple of months off the back end of my life.
Loved your reaction. Ripley is on of my all time favorite characters too. I wish they wrote characters like her these days too instead we only get bland generic girl bosses in every movie or tv show which is sad.
