It's a shame that the puppet was so poorly composited into the film, because the way that it MOVES is legitimately terrifying and a rather cool effect.
Yeah honestly it at least needed better color correction. It always had a green halo around it that didn't match the surroundings. Wish the movie had gotten remastered.
@@MapleLeafAce That was nearly impossible to do on an optical printer and very few studios at the time did digital compositing. That all changed in the following two years.
@@houstonhelicoptertours1006 yeah for that reason i really wish they had held off on it until after T2 coz then we may have got a James Cameron production of Alien 3 though it would most likely have been a completely different film and story as he has openly criticised David Fincher for killing off Hicks and Noot! despite all this i still really like the film - its is a good overarching story and some rich characters especially the doctor played by Charles Dance. the CGI does ruin the shots but if you can see past those brief moments its still a pretty solid film. in contrast the CGI was much better in Resurrection but it was overall not as good a film Alien 3 (imo). 2 centuries after the events of 3 was a little over the top.....in that universe they would have advanced a lot more in 200 yrs than we see in the film and the plot of Ripley being cloned to removed the alien didnt make sense.....so many other flops but again like Alien 3 its still enjoyable and entertaining to watch...........but alas nothing compares to the masterpieces that are ALIEN + ALIENS by 2 of the best film makers in the business.......although both Cameron and Scott have lost the plot with their latest ventures (covenant was not terrible but no good either) and as for............ Terminate Dark Fate??????????? WTF?????! ATTROCIOUS
Yeah I've always wondered if they had any of the raw footage still if it would be possible to go back and redo the compositing? If so I think it could look awesome.
@@ymb9shinzou743 Tell you what, I'd settle for a hi-rez version of this documentary...though at best it would likely have been 16mm. There's some lovely unused puppetry in there.
I agree but like the theatrical ending better & the Dog in that version made a better host because I don't see a water buffalo stalking & chasing & actually eating it's victims like I could with a dog even though dogs don't really stalk & even though the aliens design is supposed to be based off a cougar, why didn't they just use a cougar in the film??? that would have made a cool sequence actually!!!!! They could have made it one of the prisoners pets or something 🤣 it's a sci-fi movie after all!!!!!
@@mattlawrence1932 It's still a zenomorph irrespective of the host. The Aliens didn't come from hunters (human hosts) in the first two but still did what it's genetically intended to do as the brutal Aliens themselves.
Alien 1 and 2 are the best. But i love the Location of Alien 3. A dark Komplex. No Weapons, no Soldiers, no way out and no help. It is a real cool movie.
As a fanboy, it still is disapointing, but I really love the directors cut and I can truly see the context. Even with the issues I have with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, I think those two movies make this one even better.
Even with the efforts from the great FX team unfortunetely the jaguar alien wasn't realistic enough. Anyone could see it was a puppet and the illusion of the alien as a realistic monster was lost. It wasn't scary. All scenes with the man in the alien costume scenes are flawless. They should have sticked to rubbersuits.
@@Lokazana No, they couldn’t. The alien in alien 3 is too slender, the hips and legs are too skinny, there is no way a guy could have fitted in a suit requiring those dimensions. That’s why they did the rotoscoped puppet. Also, the alien in this movie is more animalistic and aggressive so it can run at 60 miles per hour, there is no way they could have done those scenes with the alien running in the hallways and ceiling with a guy wearing a suit
@@Lokazana All they needed was extra time in post for colour correction and blending but the studio didn’t give them the time as they stubbornly kept the same release date as before starting production of the movie
@@acfan8253 And that is the problem. They wanted a faster alien but couldnt create it, so they should have abandoned the idea in the first place. Todays CGI aliens arent better either tbh. If you remove all the puppet scenes the movie is ok.
@@Lokazana not exactly, the problem was the studio from the very beginning not delaying the release date they knew wasn't going to allow the crew to deliver the project completed on time. They just didn't trust David Fincher because he was a first time director but he knew what he was doing and what he wanted to achieve, his current filmography shows you that Fincher is a master of realistic visual effects and visual style. The rotoscope puppet allowed them to create scenes where you see the alien in full body movement and it moved naturally. If Fincher have had full control of the movie you would have seen better results. They only needed a few more weeks for colour correction and compositing.
Alien : Horror/Sci-fi/Thriller Aliens : Action/Sci-fi/Thriller Alien 3 : Drama/Sci-fi/Thriller I love how unique all three films in this trilogy are!!!! They all complement eachother perfectly & it's always been my favorite movie Trilogy!!!!! IDC what anyone says or dislikes about this film!!!!!! Honestly this film turned out way better than all these ppl in this documentary that are complaining about it & they're the ones who made the damn film!!!! Give yourselves some damn credit because you still made a classic regardless if the first two films were better , u still made a very good film in such a short period of time & I think if they gave them more time , it would have actually turned out even worse !!!! Rushed movies always turn out good for the most part!!!! Aliens was a rushed film , T2 was a rushed film & those are considered some of the best sequels of all time & plus you made this movie without a script while in production which is pretty much how the original Alien film was made considering they had to keep rewriting it during production just like in this film!!!! This is actually my favorite David Fincher movie & he still denies even being a part of it lolz !!!!! The other concepts & ideas they had in mind to write this film were just rediculous !!!! I can't believe they originally wanted to make a wooden planet in outerspace full of monks , that's just stupid & so unrealistic & it's a far worse idea than just making a rehash of the first two films in my eyes , thank God it costed far too much money & time consuming to build a set like that!!!!! I fuckin love this film , Alien 3 is the most underrated third instalment in a film franchise ever!!!!! It's also the film that I actually enjoy watching the most out of the entire trilogy & I've been watching this trilogy since I was a kid in the early 90's!!!!! I love how dark this movie turned out compared to the others!!!! It didn't deserve a happy beginning or a happy ending!!!! After all the Xenomorph is supposed to be the most terrifying thing in the entire universe & the perfect killing machine so it only made sense to make it begin & end dark & depressing & it made it unique compared to the first two films that do the complete opposite with the happy endings!!!!!!! This movie also has some of the best ever shots of the Xenomorph , the best most unique kill scenes , the most blood & gore of all the films in the entire franchise & the most graphic realistic in the entire franchise!!!!!
Find and watch the Special Edition. I cannot express how better it is. As everyone says , Alien/Aliens will always be the best but this still sits alongside them for me. Sure it’s not on the same level but I’ll take it. Tunnel scenes are beautiful in this film. Nothing better than that flare dropping then the psycho camera work with the fire. It’s just fantastic. Damn it , I’m watching it again today haha
I love it too, seeing it here. But when I saw it in the movie, I honestly thought it was bad CGI all this time. As a movie it just didn't come together.
@xtrmst_012 The thing is, the movie started production in late 1988. Realistic CGI was unthinkable back then. So, in 1989, they committed to doing the creature effects with miniature puppets and a guy in a costume. The puppets sometimes look good, but most of the time look pretty bad. Late in production, in 1992, they retouched them and added shadows with CGI, making them look even worse...
@xtrmst_012 Photo-realistic creatures with skin and details like eyes and teeth were not feasible in 1989. Remember that the CGI in The Abyss was mostly water, it didn't have realistic skin. In Terminator 2 the creature was metallic, with no real detail. The technology advanced very quickly, so by 1992 they could manage to make creatures with realistic skin and shading. But in 1989, only three years earlier, it was indeed unthinkable.
This is my favorite movie of all time, it would really be awesome if for the 4k release of ALIEN³ they upgraded some of those bad raw puppet scenes running trough the ceiling and corridor for better quality ones. To me the assembly cut is almost perfect but wouldn’t mind seeing a Fincher’s own Cut
Addin some sort of blur on the composite puppet edges would fix most of the problems with visuals. All it takes is to find the perfect amount of blur. To little you can still see the wonkiness too much and it would look unnatural.
@xtrmst_012it's true. I think it would be better don't use any short when alien escapes because it's not necessary. This short of really bad alien visual effect spoil the movie.
So much hard graft went into this movie. The set design, puppet work, landscape paintings and practical alien work is magnificent. They did a damn good job considering Fox's interference and an unfinished script!
The usage of the rubber puppet and the way they animate it is just brilliant. They work on planks and metal bars to give the illusion that the alien moves on a solid floor, which also makes the task easier for the animators.
22:34 - corridor crew should do a video about this movie. And they def need to include the quote - "I am very happy to be delivered from the SUMO wrestling world of photochemistry..."
Despite film critics’ trashing of this film, it was still better than Alien Resurrection which, because of its high-budget, generic sci-fi style, was praised by those same A-holes as an improvement. I’ll always remember that fact, whenever I hear film critics say that they have better taste than the general audience.
For all those who downplay alien 3 at least they must give kudos to puppet movement along with the great soundtrack.Alien 3 is the first movie that give motion identity to the creature, in alien 1 and 2 aliens moved human like cause they where humans with outfits.Alien 2 did a great job with its animatronics for the queen, alien 3 puppet was on another level,to see the beast running in corridors was awesome.
Mario M I think one of the downfall of this film is the letting go of Cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth who was suffering from Parkinson’s. He was responsible for the lighting and overall look of Bladerunner which looks amazing. It’s a damn shame that they had to let him go.
It’s a pity something just didn’t work with the Alien effects (especially compared to the first two films) there was clearly a huge amount of time and effort put into Alien 3.
Less is more. Scott understood this for the first Alien. He left the audience to fill in the gaps, and didn't focus too much on the alien because it would have looked shabby if he did. Alien 3 could have learnt from this, and took out the dodgy effects.
The director was too demanding with exactly what he wanted and didn't know the limitations and the guys did the best that they could with the technology available. Plus there is a limited amount of time and the coordination of all of those puppeteers must have been a real bitch. At a certain point , you have come so far and spent all of the money allowed and you just have to go with what you have.
@@alastairjones0It's all in what was asked for that mattered. In "Aliens" it was guys in suits, sometimes on wires. Fincher was asking for a creature that moved very differently than a man and had more of a dog's anatomy. He had specific shots and actions of the creature in mind and the technique which was chosen, happened to not work. Once you make a decision on what technique to go with and you commit, even when you see it isn't going as planned, you have no choice but to see it through. Even when they moved from rod puppets to early CGI as in "Species", this same crew screwed that up too. It was the exact same reason that they both didn't work, in that the technique that they chose was not honed enough to work in these cases.
@@southlondon86 Corridor Crew covered why the composites look a bit ‘off’ in the episode I’ve linked below. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jOPdNfOc3h0.htmlsi=daddc6bSKRINr02s Also, interestingly, the table in the shot where the Xenomorph goes up to Ripley in Clemens quarters is CG; it was done in order to hide the rear of the creature.
Many highly talented people on this production, worked with some of them during the 90s. Big shout out to former artists at Boss Film Studios. Sadly, due to the production still using optical compositing, most of the practical puppet elements can't really shine. Matte lines and color timing errors all over the place.
Wow, I really thought that ALL the xenomorphs in Alien 3 were CG - something about the lighting and the way they move in a scene. But no, it was all done practically with puppets. The puppeteering and the way the puppets can move is incredible to watch here! It really must have been the compositing that made it look so bad. What if they did a remastered version and fine-tuned the compositing from the original elements? How drastically would that change this film?
It’s been corrected digitally on the quadrilogy box set, it looks much better than before as far as the colour, but it’s still a bit lacking in stuff like light & shadow matching and motion blur, but still, it’s way better than it was.
"Mo-Motion"? Huh? It was called "Go-Motion", and was a way to shoot stop-motion animation techniques, and add motion blur by a very clever way of leaving the shutter open during the movement to attain the natural blur that occurs when filming a moving object.
As many times as I’ve seen this movie, I never realized that those were people on the EEV, as the crane moves it! I thought it debris. Wow that was awesome.
I wonder where that little puppet Alien is now? Looks fantastic. Loved the film though, this just makes me love it more. I bet this film would have been better received if it had of been made 10 years later
The box set BTS feature of this movie is way more interesting than the actual movie itself, particularly that as they were filming, they were also set building, and rewriting the script, and it wasn’t certain till very late on if it was a monastery, a forge or a prison planet, so as such the setting is a monaforgesprison. Crazy way to make a movie.
I wish that they Made movies using thus technique More ofter, it's a very unique style and with the Modern CGi techniques the could integraté the puppets flawlessly, just think about the possibilities
Ive always liked the way this xeno moved. The corridor chase is fun to watch. I wish they could update some of the special effects. Like the xeno on the ceiling.
Although visually impressive for the time, I think it lost about a third of its fans in the first 10 minutes when we discover that Bishop, Hicks AND Newt are all dead, only to be topped off by killing Ripley too in the end.
Saw this in theaters and was disappointed that there was only one alien and the fx looked hoaky...but as i came to grips with that i loved this movie more and more. I now appreciate this movie so much and feel so lucky fincher got to do a beautifully shot and directed alien slasher film. Weaver had an operatic take to a sad ending for her character.
This movie got a lot of hate, some warranted but the director's cut makes this an underappreciated addition to the Alien franchise. I bet at this point a single talented artist/animator could digitally edit the alien effects in the film and make it so much better.
T2 was released two years earlier and the effects were some of the best ever seen, and still hold up in 2021. Aliens 3's effects were composited horribly... like I'm surprised they released the movie that way. No wonder David Fincher disavows this movie.
but the budget was 100 million compared to the 50 milion alien 3 got. also they wouldn't trust fincher. the directors cut of this film is almost flawless. I wish they would re-release this film with some cgi upgrades. just to blend the alien a bit more etc. the narrative of the film is terrifying.
The perfect version they could make & redo of this film is in 4K CGI for the Alien running scenes & add it into the Assembly Cut Version but with the Theatrical version ending!!!!! & Change the damn Ox to a fuckin Cougar because that's what it's supposed to be anyways!!!!! Idk why they didn't just use a live pet Cougar originally for this film if that's what the Xenomorph concept for this film is originally based on??? I don't see a Ox or even a dog stalking it's victims & then chasing them when they run away & eating them like the Alien actually does in this film!!!!! That's also what a cougar does in real life , it stalks it's prey & if you turn your back on it & run , it's chases & pounces on u!!!!!!
What if you used blue rods for the puppeting? Wouldn't that be easier to remove? I suppose you would have to avoid getting it in front of the model though.
I think Alien 3 is an amazing film and so beautifully done. Sure, some wonky old FX, but visually and storywise, its terrific. Do npt understand the hate. That it is so good even with all the production hell it endured speaks volumes.
David Fincher said a few years ago that he thought it was a terrible film and he regretted doing it. He said that because he listened to the executives, and didn't do his own thing when directing, it didn't turn out the way he wanted it.

Covenant used the creature at the end as a mascot for their drama movie
I REALLY wish we could get a corrected FX version of the Assembly cut...even if it means some CGI work. The poor compositing creature effects were probably the biggest let down for me coming from the previous 2 films. (No...the story turn and darker tone didnt bother me in the least)
@Мармеладов ТВ you'll get that when there's like 5 different writers. I still like this film but I know I'm in a small minority on that. The 4th one was shit. And as for the prequels!....Ridley is like the Frank miller of the film world: what happened to him?
I think the Alien puppet idea was a good idea as apposed to some dude in a suit. Alien 3 isn't the best Alien film in the franchise and personally I think Alien is still the best one followed by Aliens but Alien 3 isn't the worst. I think Alien: Resurrection was worser than Alien 3 so compared to Resurrection I think Alien 3 is a classic.
I get that this was before cgi took off and it is decent, but they still should have just stuck to the guy in the suit. Especially when interacting with the cast.
It so awsome that the way the puppet moved it so annoying that when they edit into the movie it looked off I always thought it was bad cgi but it wasn’t it shame I really enjoyed alien 3 but it get a lot of hate alien and aliens are the best but alien 3 directors cut is great, alien resurrection is crap I don’t consider it to be a canon alien movie lol

I really loved the original concept of monks instead of inmates ...... like it was the devil that came for them - still loved the dark concept amd all the actors were brilliant ..... it’s a massive shame that the alien look terrible in the film ..... seems a big shame as it looked great here amd the work they all put it . If they could ever go back amd fix that alien look problem the film would look way better IMO
